Tons of options and unlockables combined with solid action.

THE SHORT: A pretty good story mode, and tons of things to unlock in the addictive challenges and combat modes- all of which can be played alone or with multiple players. Decent but limited mapmaker.

THE LONG: I flat out didn't like TS1. The single player or "story" mode consisted of running back and forth for fetch quests, and the mapmaker let me set up corridors but gave me just a tiny handful of patterns to design it with. It was fast and it was pretty (minus the overly stylized goofy characters) but I didn't think it was much of a game.

This first sequel improves on almost all of what I had issue with. For starters, the game's just as pretty and runs very smooth and very fast (keeping fairly consistent in multiplayer as well). The storyline is better too- it's like Goldeneye with actual mission goals that change or grow as the level progresses. But I personally had the most fun with "arcade mode", which is multiplayer combat. I want to specify here that this is where the game excels over such titles as even the much hyped Halo (and even more recent games): like Perfect Dark, this is one of the very few games where I can play multiplayer matches against computer opponents. If you're like me you don't always have enough people around for 16-player, 4 system links and whatnot. Frankly I usually prefer to play alone anyway. And in this way, Timesplitters 2 accommodated me.

For example, like Perfect Dark, this game features some levels that I liked more than others and so, not wanting to play the story mode, I wanted to just jump into that cool level and fight some opponents. This game allowed me to do so, picking not only what opponents I fought but also how tough they were and what weapons were used. In addition, I could set parameters such as time/kill limits, and by the time I unlocked them, could choose among more than a dozen different combat variations such as "Flame Tag". In other words, this game lets you play multiplayer, storyline stuff, or plain old combat- with or against other humans in each case.

There are loads of unlockables, as well. There are more than 100 different characters in the game, with at least half of that number representing legitimately unique and interesting choices. Each has their own stat rating such as speed and accuracy, and some characters such as robots have extra advantages like immunity to fire. This adds even more strategy to deathmatches but can be turned off as well.

In addition to unlocking the characters, you'll be unlocking goofy cheats such as pirate hats or practical things such as new levels and combat modes. This is one of those games where every level, challenge, or combat scenario rewards you with new stuff once completed, so there's a very satisfying feeling of constant progress and perpetual motivation to try to meet each goal. Some of it is tough- sometimes tuned to be just barely within your grasp, but there seems to always be other stuff to accomplish if you get stuck. For each of three nights, I went to bed satisfied that I unlocked some of the cool stuff I'd wanted, then played the next day and opened up even more. It was addicting.

Thankfully, this was all set up within a very pretty package. The stylized, exaggerated look from the first game is still here for those that liked it, but for people like me it's nice that characters are a little less goofy looking. And with more than a hundred, it's easy to develop favorites. The graphics during gameplay itself are solid and the game moves quite fast for being several years old, even during multiplayer combat with a
handful of AI opponents thrown in.

And again, that's where the game gets its highest marks from me. While the storyline is interesting enough and fairly engaging in its disparate levels, it was that combat that made me keep playing this game. By the time I played through most of the basic and "arcade league" challenges, I'd unlocked around 15 different deathmatch types- modes such as capture the flag, king of the hill, last man standing, and more bizarre stuff such as monkey helpers- in which the person in last place gets monkeys with heavy weaponry. When you figure that you can pick from a dozen or so stages, add up to 10 AI opponents whose difficulty you set, throw in weapons of your choice, and then pick the score type and combat parameters, that's a huge amount of customization. As I said, it's a level of single-player control and immersion the likes of which I haven't seen since Perfect Dark.

Controls feel natural and very intuitive, the graphics and sound are appropriate (and downright amusing) and the options are very thorough. The pace of unlocking stuff is great, with a couple dozen hours of perpetual new stuff. Altogether this is a fine game, which at this point you can grab for just $10-15 bucks. Do it, especially if you're a guy like me and doesn't want to rely on a bunch of others to have some good interactivity with your first-person shooters.

A Great First-Person Shooter

If you like the FPS genre, then get this game. If you ever played Golden Eye on the N64, the second you pop this game in you will be reminded of it. I just played the PS2 version of it today and I loved it. All I'm waiting for is the XBOX version. What is so great about it is the variety. Not only does it have a story mode, but multiplayer and challenge modes (like Perfect Dark on N64). The reasons I make the comparisons to great N64 games made by Rare is because the development team, Free Radical, left Rare to make Timesplitters 2. The game, I will admit, is not story driven, but then again neither was Golden Eye. The games strengths are in it's missions and and mastering those missions (To unlock secrets) and the mulitplayer. Some people complain that there is not enough blood and guts, but that kind of stuff does not make a game good. Great gameplay does. And Timesplitters 2 has an abundance of it. It runs at a cool 60 fps (frames per seconds) and the graphics were great on the PS2. Imagine it on the XBOX. And for the grips about the aiming...the controls are very senstive, but once you get used to the speed of the game, you adapt. Besides, you can go to the menu screen and change the senstivity if you like, JUST LIKE IN HALO!!! Well, I hope I helped convince you to get this great game.

If you liked Halo, give this a shot

I bought the XBox version of the game and have played it for a week. Overall it is a very enjoyable first person shooter with some very nicely designed levels/themes.

The one hangup that most people have with the controls is the "auto return to center" effect on weapons. If you are sniping someone in the upper right corner, for instance, you need to hold the aim control stick in that position to stop it from snapping back to the center position. This is different than Halo, which will hold your aim position indefinitely. After playing for a little bit you will get used to this "feature".

A lot of the controls are customizable, you can set up weapons switch, fire, alt fire, reload, activate, zoom, auto-aim, etc. You can also customize the crosshair aimer and croutch to stay on when the thumbstick is pushed, or to toggle with it.

The game is somewhat challenging on the normal level, even for the first map - which will keep you engrossed. It combines heavy fire fighting with puzzles. Most of the story play involves figuring out where items/enemies are and developing a strategy that you may need to repeat a few times to be successful. There is no auto-save feature - only 1 checkpoint per level that once you reach you can return to until you complete the level.

I haven't checked out the other mass features of this game, including map editing, arcade mode, hundreds of characters, and system linking with other players for deathmatch. Multiplay is reported to be very exciting, ala Quake online.

Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I bought this game because of the good reviews I heard from everyone, including people on Amazon.com, and I decided to pick it up ($$$sale$$$). Well, at first, getting used to the controls, it felt a little bit stupid. The auto aim was awful, the graphics didn't immediatly impress me, and the overall gameplay was just boring. But I kept playing, and soon I found myself on the second mission, kicking butt, and realized 2 hours had passed. I had to stop and tell the world! "Why?" THIS GAME IS AWSOME!!!!!

1. Gameplay: First off, if you're an expierienced gamer, shut the auto-aim OFF in preferences. It really kills the gameplay. Second, realize how cool the gameplay is. There are dozens of guns to try out, the graphics are awsome, and your enemies actually use their brain. That's what made this game such a challenge. To begin the game, you see a little movie about an Alien race called the "TimeSplitters" . They travel through time, and are here to take over the world. So Earth sends out a last hope with a group of Marines. They send 2 (you and if you have a friend, a second person) marines on to the Alien's ship. They battle their way to the bridge, where 9 Aliens have already disapeared into a time warp. Each is in a different time with a time crystal you have to retrieve. So you follow these Aliens through each time period, shooting your way through anything from zombies, guards, aliens, other marines, spies, robots, etc...it's really cool. Once you finish the game, the world is saved. The thing is, once you beat a game on the hardest level, u unlock an even harder difficulty setting. Can u beat it on a harder level, than the next? Really cool, and you can re-do any level on any setting, at any time. And you can do all these levels in one player, or 2 player. So me and my best friends could go through the story as a team. What a blast!

You have anything from grenades, snipers, shotguns, pistols, machine guns, etc... and it just gets better. This is just the story. Should I move on?

2. The graphics: Not the greatest we've ever seen, but still quite good. You see gun shells fall to the ground, watch water spray down from a waterfall, see heads fall off and roll to the floor (only from zombies, no gore here!). When u shoot at wall, the gun marks appear and stay for the game. Glass shatters, people fall back when u shoot. Good explosions, etc... It gets the job done and a little bit more. Graphics here are good, but don't expect HALO.

3. Sound: Very good. Each gun makes it's own sound, voice acting is pretty good, the alarms make u jump with the realistic screech. Unfortunantly, you don't here the people walk. Little things like that aren't here, but once again, it gets the job done. 3.5 out of 5 stars in sound. But u don't really notice anything bad during the awsome gameplay. As for the menu music, FANTASTIC! Very good game, and the music really gets u excited for the games. I love this game, and the sound was part of it!

4. Multiplayer: AWSOME! 4 player, 3 player, and 2 player. You can play through the story through 2 player, and have 4 player fighting frenzy after that. You can do a deathmatech (where your 4 players fight off impossible odds working together), challenge (where you make a challenge and face it), campaining (where you have 2 teams with dozens of people going through all out war! Players pick their side), and the good 'ole 4-player killing spree. You all face each other, battling for kills, points, and the right to stay alive and call yourself the champ! These are just a few (to give you an idea). And with over a 100 characters to choose from, dozens of levels to fight in, and a ton of game types, this game will keep you entertained...for awhile!

Overall, this game rocked. I wasn't expecting such a fun game when I picked it up. Definantly worth the buy. And if you share an XBOX with good friends, room mates, brothers and sisters, etc.. you can work as a team in multiple ways, including going throug EVERY singlr mission in story mode, guarding each other's back.

It wasn't HALO, but it was a great game. No gore, and a ton of awsome fun, TimeSplitter's 2 (the sequel to the classic TimeSplitter's for the PlayStation) lives up to the hype, and can be compared to games like Perfect Dark, Golden Eye, and even HALO in some terms.

Hope this helped, now I gotta go play TimeSplitter's 2!!!!!!

Excellent FPS with a lot of variety.

I consider this game a must-have for XBOX or PS2.

Personally, I have gotten more gameplay out of Timsplitters than Halo. It's a solid game with a lot of things to do.

The storyline is a bit weak, but, who cares (the original Timesplitters didn't even have one)? It offers what few FPS do: variety. One level you're handling a futuristic plasma rifle, the next it's a crossbow, and then six-shooters. The variety of weapons and locations means that you can have a different experience depending on what you feel like. I'm partial to the retro weapons myself.

If you feel like doing something other than the story mode, try the challenge or arcade modes. They are often intended to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, so here is where you pick up off-the-wall characters, like the gingerbread man (one of my favorites). There is more to unlock, and getting a high enough score can sometimes be pretty hard.

Multiplayer offers Bots, and you can customize the character set to change difficulty, so you can still have a fun multiplayer experience by yourself or with just a couple of friends.

Some have complained about the cartoony look, but I feel that is a strength. I can play this around people where I might feel a little guilty pulling out Halo. The violence takes on a Wile E. Coyote feel.

My main complaint is that the controls are often a little twitchy when compared to Halo. If they had been more polished, it would probably take top billing, in my opinion. It's problematic, but not enough to make me dislike the game.

Ultimately Timesplitters is not a game that takes itself seriously. Really, what else can I say with challenges like "Behead the Undead"?

I've noticed that even the people that complain endlessly about the game still give it about 4 stars. This game is definitely worth buying, especially at the current pricing.

Best multiplayer FPS

You can compare this to Halo because multiplayer is better. The graphics aren't the best because they're arcady. The single player game is average but multiplayer is fun because the action is so fast. In Halo can you throw or fire 15 grenades in 8 secs, no because Halo doesn't have secondary fire on weapons and the game is quite slow.

In multiplayer the funnist mode is virus where there are 10 bots and 1 of them tries to get the rest and your self. There's a wide selection of guns like different pistols, machine guns, crossbows, sniper rifels, bricks, timed mines and a flame thrower.

PROS
Multiplayer is fantastic
Controling is perfect
Lots of weapons/game modes
Arcade league/challenge

CONS
Graphics are far from perfect
Single Player is average

Buy it because there's loads to do to keep you busy.

Maybe a better game than HALO

This for shorly is a perfect game for multiplayer WHY might you ask then where the heck have you been for the past 2 years !!!!!!!!!!! FOR instance you get a wide sellection of multiplayer games inclooding deathmatch. Also you are given a huge sellction of wepons for instant fun for hours on end. If you want you can have 10 story levles. DONT! FORGET ABOUT MAPMAKER!!!! This is a mode where one you can make your own map creating modes with even story mode if you use your game logic right. Or you might want to make a map with all your specal modes.

The wepons in TS2 are not the best of all so here they are first 3 types of pistols a silanced , a luger and gerett revolver. A crossbow and flame thower. 2 sniper rifles , 2 shotguns , 3 machine guns , 1 heavy and explosives inclooding rocket launchers.

Heres some bad points it not the exact game for you if you only want story mode. If you want espesialy hard bots then you wont get them and heres why. I can kill atleast 100 bots(I am a very good gamer)at there highest competetive rate in atleast 7 mins.

Good points.
If you want great multiplayer get this.
Challenge mode and Arcade league. Set you 66 challenges which a few are only hard.

excellent

Another great FPS for XBox

Well I didn't buy my copy from Amazon because I have been waiting to long already for this game, but I will definately write a review about it for them. I have played the demo of this game so I knew what to expect before I bought it. It is really a rock solid FPS. The story is a little out there and the graphics are very cartoonish. This in my opinion does not detract from the game play at all, it just adds to the style of the game.

As far as the overall graphics, XBox does well in that department. There is no slowdown no matter how many enemies are involved in the action. It moves at the rock solid 60 fps(frames per second) that most computer FPS games run at.

The sound is good, I do think they could have added a little more low end in the explosions since it is in Dolby 5.1, that would have given them a bigger boom, but most people won't notice since they are playing the sound through TV speakers that couldn't make the sound that great to start with.

The controls are very responsive. In fact if you are used to Halo you may need to adjust the speed a little to compensate for the responsiveness. The control scheme is basically the same as Halo except the d-pad is used to switch weapons and to zoom scopes in and out. The controller can be completely remapped through the options menu so if you want to set it up identical to Halo's scheme that can be accomplished.

The multiplayer and arcade modes are great features from a replayability point of view. New characters and levels can be unlocked by meeting certain goals in the Arcade mode where 1-4 players can run and gun through a level filled with AI Bots. Multiplayer is very well done and it supports system link. I have yet to do this with Timeplitters but if it is as good as Halo's system link games I am sure it will be great fun. There is also a feature to design your own levels that can be played in single or multiplayer modes.

I have very few complaints about this game. One would be the lack of a close quarters attack. I would have preferred the ability to butt-stoke my foes at will with my rifle. I would have also liked to have more checkpoints throughout a level. There is only one checkpoint in each level so on a tough level you will start over several times from the beginning. I am also very disappointed that it doesn't support XBox Live.

Overall I am extremely pleased with this game, it is fresh and stylish and it maintaines smooth gameplay, good control and massive replay value. If you like First Person Shooters buy this game you won't be disappointed. You will probably be quite satisfied with it until Unreal Tournament comes out for XBox Live....

The "Goldeneye" of the Twenty-first Century

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 6

Since James Bond has now become a huge advertising sell-out, we now have to get our espionage and carnage action from the TimeSplitters line of games. Done by "the people who brought you GoldenEye" for the N64, the XBox finally has something that will supercede Halo's FPS excitement. Not only that, but TimeSplitters is much more fast-paced, and more playable with groups of friends than Halo is.

TimeSplitters 2 improves upon the original by including a variety of often hilarious characters which includes the Hunchback of Notre Dame, several different 1930s mafiosi, Frosty the Snowman, and even monkeys with guns!
