Seeing the game for what it is

OK, I read just about all the reviews and I have a little bit to add. First, this game is not meant to be taken too seriously. It is a cartoony goofy kind of game, and I think a lot of people who are writting the bad reviews failed to see past this to how much this game offers.

7 levels in story mode, cool. Wait, you can play them co-op? very cool. Wait, there are over 50 pre-made arcade battles ranging from standard deathmatch with robots to capture the flag with a bunch of gi wearing monks vs. marine shock troopers? Then there are still a number of challeges that are pre-made for single players as well.

The versatility of this game is unimaginable. 100 characters to unlock, that's unheard of. This game was made to be fun, there is an arcade battle where you are a mafia mob boss who, after being sedated for surgery, thinks that there are ducks chasing him, so you are trying to fight off humanoid ducks weilding paired combat shotguns... how can you NOT laugh at these? Then you get to the customization, create your own map, that's huge! Or use a premade map, but only fight monkeys... with flamethrowers. Or play a game of capture the flag with four of your friends against bots, who are amazon women wearing only loincloths. This game can be, and IS so many things... it's not Halo, but that was someone's review, not the developer's comparison. Try it, you might like it.

Playstation version rocks, XBOX one must be even better!

What can I say about this game... I do not own the XBOX version myself, but I am interested in getting it within the next hour.

Anyhow - it is a great game, the XBOX version I recommend. I have played both (rentals), and they ROCK!

Go against your friends in a LAN party, have some fun, it rules!

Do not compare it to Halo or Halo 2, they are two different games.

XBOX games are in GENERAL, better quality than PS2 ones when it goes into this catagory. I am not dissing the PS2 fans, but XBOX is the best for FPS, due to the graphics, and the processor.

Gaming on this game is nice, I do not really personally enjoy the map editor, because I do not exactly know how to build maps that well.

The only thing that could be better is a nicer online gaming interface.

Loads of replay value! A rare 5-Star game...

I wanted a good FPS and decided to risk buying this game. It's awesome!

I tried the two X-Box demos of this game before buying it. The first time I tried the demo, I couldn't stand the aiming. I'm not sure if they've tweaked it, but it actually seemed fine in the second demo and now in the full game). Or maybe I've gotten used to it...

There's a load of replay value: you can unlock minigames, characters, complete levels on various difficulty settings, play multiplayer (with map editor), etc. I know I have only scratched the surface because I am on level 5. The environments and voice acting are excellent, and on the Xbox the graphics are smooth and lovely. Each level has competely new enemies and environments. I could see a whole game built around one level of this game!

The creative weapons are a nice change from your average FPS. Use a flamethrower, but you can catch yourself on fire. So, you'll need to be carrying a fire extinguisher (found on the wall) to put people out before they reach you! If you DO catch on fire, run to the broken shower. Details like this make a special game.

I hope this is legible - I am in a hurry because I want to go back to playing. I just wanted to let folks know that this is a great game and worth the 50 bucks. You'll get a LOT of gameplay from it.

Poor graphics, unsalvagably boring asinine gameplay, deaf and dumb clumsy controls, and a soundtrack that serves only to remind you of the monotonous passage of time combine to make this possibly the second worst x-box game ever, spared highest dishonors only by the existence of the unmentionable Obi-Wan. If I see "Halo" and "TimeSplitters 2" in the same sentence again I will chew glass.

Halo succeeds on so many levels where this fails. The levels are long and Obi-wan-style sparse and stupid, but that's ok because you're in the Ferrarri of nauseating turbo wheelchairs. The enemy AI is poor, and the controls are so ham-handed that none of the gun battles have any intensity whatsoever as you plink your way through the endless hordes of retarded mimes.

The only thing in this title that will quicken your pulse is when you finally die and realize that you have to play about 20 minutes of the same level over again... and over again... and over again... Halo introduced a genius checkpoint system; no FPS game being released almost a YEAR later should be without something like it. Especially when the cover says "First Halo, and now this..." This title would get zero stars except for one lesson I've learned: always, always, always rent before you buy, even if the game has several 9+ ratings.

aiming is strange

it's just another shooter that doesn't have anything special about it and the aiming is lousy! the graphics are nice and it has some cool weapons. i would give it 3.75 stars. the aiming held me back from a better rating, if you need a shooter, you won't be dissapointed with this one ...

Big disappointment

Graphics are super weak, to compare them to Halo is simply blasphemous. Worst of all is the actual gameplay - the enemy AI is pretty cheeseball, there's no jump button, a severe lack of powerups (which is irritating when you get to the last 2 minutes of a level with about 1% health, take one bullet and croak) and although you can fully customize the controller, you can't customize things like the sensitivity of your crosshairs/aim, and the default setting is soooo loose and fast that it is practically impossible to hit your target with anything less than 10 rounds, let alone try and hit your target in a tense gunfight. I just love the way that when you die, the game sends you back to a check point that is about 20 minutes of gameplay back, so you have to redo about a million things just to get to the point where you originally died. I didn't even finish this game, it was sooo darn frustrating. I don't know why all the industry/magazine reviews went nuts for this game, maybe they were bribed, because the actual game deserves about 2% of the actual attention that it has received. This game is closer to the james bond 007 game that came out on xbox several months ago than it is to Halo, and if you consider that Halo is a "10" and that james bond game was about a "2", then you should get a good idea of the quality of this game. Too bad really: good concept but poor execution.

who is the smart guy who reviewed it first???

Well I didn't buy my copy from Amazon because I have been waiting to long already for this game, but I will definately write a review about it for them. I have played the demo of this game so I knew what to expect before I bought it. It is really a rock solid FPS. The story is a little out there and the graphics are very cartoonish. This in my opinion does not detract from the game play at all, it just adds to the style of the game.

As far as the overall graphics, XBox does well in that department. There is no slowdown no matter how many enemies are involved in the action. It moves at the rock solid 60 fps(frames per second) that most computer FPS games run at.

The sound is good, I do think they could have added a little more low end in the explosions since it is in Dolby 5.1, that would have given them a bigger boom, but most people won't notice since they are playing the sound through TV speakers that couldn't make the sound that great to start with.

The controls are very responsive. In fact if you are used to Halo you may need to adjust the speed a little to compensate for the responsiveness. The control scheme is basically the same as Halo except the d-pad is used to switch weapons and to zoom scopes in and out. The controller can be completely remapped through the options menu so if you want to set it up identical to Halo's scheme that can be accomplished.

The multiplayer and arcade modes are great features from a replayability point of view. New characters and levels can be unlocked by meeting certain goals in the Arcade mode where 1-4 players can run and gun through a level filled with AI Bots. Multiplayer is very well done and it supports system link. I have yet to do this with Timeplitters but if it is as good as Halo's system link games I am sure it will be great fun. There is also a feature to design your own levels that can be played in single or multiplayer modes.

I have very few complaints about this game. One would be the lack of a close quarters attack. I would have preferred the ability to butt-stoke my foes at will with my rifle. I would have also liked to have more checkpoints throughout a level. There is only one checkpoint in each level so on a tough level you will start over several times from the beginning. I am also very disappointed that it doesn't support XBox Live.

Overall I am extremely pleased with this game, it is fresh and stylish and it maintaines smooth gameplay, good control and massive replay value. If you like First Person Shooters buy this game you won't be disappointed. You will probably be quite satisfied with it until Unreal Tournament comes out for XBox Live....

Great Multiplayer

First off, never compare this to Halo, okay. The only true similarity is that they're FPS's. Just to give a warning to those who desire a game with an excellent story mode, don't get this. It just doesn't make sense as to why the Time Splitters would have any interest in putting a crystal(which u must collect) in places like Chicago, Siberia, ect. The game really takes place in 3000, or something. It's like they wanted to make tons of levels in different eras and could only tie them together with time travel. And who are the people u kill? They look human-are they, or are they ts's in disguise? Much goes unexplained, and the only motivation to beat Story is to unlock new characters(126 of them) Aah, but the multiplayer-so many things to do. There is AI, so u can play multiplayer by yourself. If you just want an excellent MP game to play with ur friends, get this now! It won't dissapoint anyone. In not one review has there been a complaint about it. U can do a co op mission in Story mode and defeat the levels with a friend; this kind of saves the Story mode. There are ten Arcade levels, which u can do 10 different things in; deathmatch, bag tag(similar to capture the flag in Halo),zones, gladiator, ect. Finally, you can make ur own single or multiplayer levels in Map Maker, though u can't be too creative. You can't make levels with grass or snow or sand! They are basically levels with concrete walls, though you can change the lighting; I love blood red! Finally, the last few cons:
1 Crosshairs are messed up and move before you do and don't stay towards the center, though they can be switched off with L
2 Only one powerfull story level, Notre Dame. You have to kill zombies, and towards the end you must kill priest at a Black Mass, though it's not as bad as it sounds. It's music combined with dead dudes walking at me gave me chills from time to time.
3 No blood, gore, and it's a little cartoonish for some veteran FPS players.
But multiplayer saves the game big time!

Worth the discounted price...

...of under $15, $20 max. I bought this game at Walmart because of the low price and the favourable comparison to Halo that was on the game cover. Who says advertising doesn't work? :D

As one previous reviewer said, the only comparison between this and Halo is that they're both FPSs with a sci-fi bent and both a single player and multiplayer game. Other than that, don't play this game with the expectations you may have when playing Halo.

I'm writing this review after playing the game for the first time. I started to play it with the story game with Halo in mind, and the cartoony feel plus more than two weapons at a time, as well as offbeat humor threw me off track and got me pissed off. Then I got through the first level and went to the second level set in ganster Chicago, thought "maybe this game doesn't suck so bad." Then I went to multiplayer, and finished playing it with a grin on my face saying "hey, this game is pretty good!" On its own terms, of course.

Make no mistake, Halo is a GREATER game than Timesplitters 2 in terms of story, gameplay, realism, and ability to involve the player in the game. However, it is not a BETTER game than Timesplitters 2. Timesplitters isn't better than Halo either, but both have advantages over the other to tweak gameplay. For someone like myself who doesn't have that many other people to play with, the ability to use bots in Timesplitters 2 is quite welcome for arena battles, and the weapons/characters are a hoot. Halo multiplayer is for serious contenders who want tactical gameplay; TS2 multiplayer is for people who want to waste everything in sight (ergo, it's more fun).

I don't like the aiming system, the game still seems a bit corny to me and the controls are pretty weird, but I am now willing to give it a chance. Judge it on its own merits and don't compare it to Halo, and you'll see it's a pretty decent game for the price it goes for.
