PS3 has just raised the bar. A Killer App is born.

MGS4 is one of the few games that has recently approached the "games as interactive movies" threshold. Anyone who owns a PS3 would be foolish not to have this title in their library.

The Good:

Graphics:
MGS4 is the best looking video game ever made. Period. Hands down Crysis. We have finally crossed a divide where gameplay actually looks like pre-rendered CGI scenes. They were even so confident in the look of the game that you can actually zoom in during every scene and look up close at the detail and play director. The characters look real, but with a particular MGS4 style that isn't going for photorealistic. The lighting is great and some of the scenes are just beautiful to look at.

Groundbreaking Gampeplay Additions:
MGS4 brings a ton of new ideas to gaming. The first is the inclusion of an in-game ipod that you control by twirling the right analog stick. This is awesome. You can listen to podcasts from the developers or some nice tunes while playing through the game. It's a very smart improvement over custom soundtrack menus.

The next element is the level of boss fights. Particularly, there are two towards the end that you have never seen in any other game. The first is a Mech fight that looks unbelievable and is insanely fun. And the second is the final fight at the end. I won't spoil it, but you feel like you're watching a movie even though you are steering your character through some incredible choreographed moves.

Furthermore, they have included split screen cutscenes while you play so you see the action going on with another character while you are playing the game, similar to an episode of 24. This is a remarkable device in a video game and really enhances the excitement because you see double the action going on screen.

Also, they've included something I expect to see in all future shooters, the ability to switch between first person view and third person. One minute you're sneaking around like normal, and the next you switch to first person and feel like you're playing Call of Duty 4. All in all, the action and combat in MGS4 are phenomenal and it's wonderful you get to choose how you play the game (sneak or full out shoot em up).

Finally, two features stand out, Snake's new Octocamo suit blends into any surface you touch like a chameleon skin. It brings a whole new element to stealth games and looks great. In addition there is substantial weapons customization and a ton of available weapons that all feel and sound powerful and well-designed.

Production Values:
MGS4 has zero programming faults and you can see that they put a ton of effort into making sure that this game ran smoothly, had no framerate hangups, had an easy-to-use interface, and was completely bug-free. Even when zooming in and out of the cutscenes and whirling the camera around with dozens of characters on screen, this thing never stutters and never freezes. Simply put, this game is incredibly well-crafted. And is a real showcase title for what the PS3 is capable of.

The Bad:
The Plot: This plot has so many holes in it you could drive a bus through them. Often I found myself going "huh, that doesn't make any sense." Or, "no human being with an IQ above a toaster's would do that in real life." A lot of the things in the plot seem thrown in to tie the whole series together and other things are thrown in just to set the stage for some scene later that needs a certain character. Long story short, the plot is trying way too hard to make a sweeping commentary about war, the war economy, and the mental anguish it inflicts on its victims and perpetrators. It's impressive that they tried in a video game, but again, just a bit overdone.

And the worst part is, the senseless plot unfolds over tedious "mission briefings" and cutscenes that often include repetitive information or monologues. Simply put, things feel a little heavy-handed and they definitely would have benefited from trimming some things. Luckily, you can skip them or pause them if you're bored. The good news is, some of the cutscenes are simply incredible to watch and rival the best movie theatre action sequences. It's a shame that some scenes are both tedious AND notoriously long.

The Verdict:

MGS4 has just raised the bar in so many ways that this game alone justifies a PS3 purchase. Although the gameplay is interspersed between numerous cutscenes, the gameplay is incredibly fun and you have a ton of freedom to choose how you play. Everything you love about the MGS series has been improved, and everything you hate about it has as well and at least it can be skipped. The voice acting is top-notch, and the experience is so unique and original to the field of gaming that all gamers should play through this at least once. The single player alone is worth the price of admission, but since it comes with some of Metal Gear Online multiplayer, this is an experience you'd be foolish to turn down.

Great game! Could be better...

I waited till finishing the game before I wrote my review. This game is stunning gorgeous and fun as Hell considering we were all bummed by Haze and tired of COD 4. I'm giving this review 5 stars even though I don't believe it is deserving of a perfect score. To give it 4 stars would put it in the category of some games that aren't nearly as good. This 5 star system is too limiting but I will explain. I absolutely loved the graphics because they are (finally) next gen quality! The controls are deep! The weapons are numerous and you can alter almost all of them... The game is massive in size and story! Truly is a must rent at the very least. Can't say enough good things about it so I will tell you what could have been better in my opinion. Enemy AI pretty dumb. Many times I found enemies would stand in front of my while I reloaded. The boss battles were too easy. Most times I just broke out the M60 and plowed my way through them refilling my health when needed because there is a plethora of health pack. The story gets tiring real fast to anyone who's not that interested in every little aspect of the story. As soon as a character would say something like "Back in 1965" I played a minigame I will call "Pause/Skip"! You play Pause/Skip allot!!! If your into the story you will be stoked! If your not then you can skip the video. I tried watching but couldn't take it anymore. At one point I hit a save point and got video. Skipped it and got more video... Kept skipping (about 10 videos) and all of a sudden I was at another save/download point. After downloading I got MORE VIDEO!!! I try watching the videos at first but if they go off on obscure stories or drawn out slow mo scenes I usually skipped it. There are some small control issues like the lack of sprint and when crawling you get spun around allot and accidentally spotted because of the way he crawls but this is avoidable and a small complaint. My biggest complaint is when I found Snake's Ipod and thought to myself "Finally a game that will let me listen to MY music on my hard drive". WRONG!!! You can only listen to Metal Gear Solid Music, lame... Some levels are way too easy or too boring! I haven't played online yet because when a friend of mine and I tried we gave up and will never try again. Konami's registration on their web sight asks for more information and passwords than my bank did when I opened up my online banking! THAT IS NOT A JOKE!!! God forbid you try and enter it with the PS 3 controller, good luck! COD 4 and Resistance didn't want any of that why does Konami want to harass their consumers so badly instead of just getting the info from the PS Network?! This was truly retarded and I am boycotting the online part along with my clan from COD 4 (RGV=Random Grenade Violence). Allot of readers are probably thinking negative thoughts of my review right now but I am just trying to say some things that needed to be better in my opinion. Even with all the complaints I loved this game!!! I feel I got my moneys worth and that feels good after the Haze and GTA 4 overhyping. Skip the video or don't skip the video its a great game either way and allot of fun! If you want more positive reviews read one of the many reviews above and below mine. I was just trying to mention some stuff that I haven't read in others yet...

I have all the next Gen consoles and this game by far proves that the power of the PS3 is unreal, this game took 4 years to make and I have beaten it on normal, now I will play on advanced,Kojima productions my hats off to you for the best game ever created,as much as I liked Bio Shock this game out does it by a wide margin which should make it GOTY.Being a hardcore gamer this is by far the best experience of game play I have ever played.Sony was smart to keep this as the exclusive for the PS3,and it deserves all the 10's it has gotten.
