Great Game! Especially If You Haven't Played This Series for a While

it is all the hype said it would be! My only complaint is that the mapping system doesn't work very well but other than that it is pretty decent! Especially when you have a surround sound system it really utilizes it wonderfully!

A perfect 10?

IGN gave Metal Gear Solid 4, Guns of the Patriots, a perfect 10.

The only other game on either platform to earn a perfect 10, has been Grand Theft Auto 4, which also came out recently.

So that puts PS3 and 2 perfect 10 games, and the Xbox 360 at 1... With the 360 having the same perfect 10 game as the PS3, so the PS3 is truly 1 up. But if you go to the next tier down, scores of 9+, the story changes. Xbox has nearly 50% more 9+ games which results in??? A more quality gaming base maybe? Or is it just that 360 has so many games due to being launched nearly a year earlier, that they just have so many they have to have a few gems in there somewhere?

I think the latter is somewhat correct. But GTA4 and MGS4 are perfect 10s? Ya, I think so. I played GTA4 on the 360, and had a blast. Very good storyline, tons to do, and it keeps you interested whether you're in it 24/7 or just a couple hours a week. The same goes for MGS4. I had to put it down for a few days, but when I picked it back up I was immediately immersed in the storyline which I'd forgotten back to MGS1... But they did an awesome job of reminding me of the key points I forgot, which was extremely helpful in getting caught back up... Especially since I pretty much skipped MGS3.

Now the question to me is... Now that I've seen some of the power of the PS3 tapped in MGS4, with character textures, eyes, and facial expressions that look absolutely a-fricken-mazing, combined with a very very solid in depth storyline, combined with deeply immersing gameplay... Is GTA4 really a perfect 10? Am I comparing apples and oranges? I think I am. They are two very different games, with two very different goals. But I think that MGS4 is made so well, that when put next to GTA4, people who've played both would seriously have to consider which to play. I think the only thing MGS4 really has over GTA4, is polish.

Is it the PS3? Or is it just attention to detail? I think it's Blu-Ray. I don't think the same level of graphical candy can be attained with the 360. Not because it's a weaker machine... But because I'd be willing to wager the visual texture files in MGS4 probably take up two or three DVDs worth of information. There is so much data, you even have to wait 2-8 minutes between some acts for the new data to load to the hard drive. I like this. This prevents loading/lagging between scenes, cutscenes, and storylines. Very very smart Konami's behalf.

Yes. Metal Gear Solid is worthy of a perfect 10.

That's pretty much all I've got to say.

Excellent in every way!

This game came with the new 80 Gb Playstation 3 that I picked up at the Metreon Playstation Store in San Francisco on June 13th.

So far I've progressed to the point in the game where I've defeated the Laughing Octopus and have left the lab in search of Naomi (no success in finding her anywhere along the mountain trail maze yet. I'm stuck! HELP!)

This is the best videogame I have ever played, hands down! The graphics are on par with the movie Final Fantasy. And the the musical arrangements and sound quality are also the best I have heard in ANY video game! If you have a high-end home theater sound system, you will feel like you're in a true war zone! Your viewing room will shake with each nearby explosion in the game!! You'll feel them too! Just respect your neighbors, even those across the street late at night!

The only thing I think could have been improved is the instruction manual Not always very clear on how to use the controller... however after playing the game a short time, you'll figure out how to use all the weapon available.

This is a MUST HAVE game for anyone who has a Playstation 3. Bravissimo to the minds of Konami!

Good game but online needs work.

I liked this game. It had good visuals and even though this was my first MGS experience I actually enjoyed the story. It makes me want to play the other MGS and go back and try this one again. I wish there was a little more action in this game but at least it gives you the option to run and gun if you get tired of sneaking around. One thing that needs work is the online feature. I could hit a guy with a grenade and empty a whole clip in him and he would turn around, shoot me with a pistol and I would die. The CQC hardly ever works. I came up on a lot of guys trying to hide and snipe. I would get all excited because I knew how sweet it was going to be to cut his throat but then when I went for the grab my character acted like the two were lovers and try to hug him and the other guy would then turn around and shoot me and I would die. This happened a bunch of times. When I play through the campaign i don't have any problems with CQC. Just to make sure it wasn't me that was crazy I went to the virtual range and performed 30 plus CQC takedowns on the dummies in a row flawlessly. I know this was just supposed to be a starter pack for Metal Gear Online but until they fix the bugs I'm going back to Call of Duty 4.

IT'S BEST GAME EVER!!!

Ummm i must say, this game is one of the best games so far for the PS3 that i have seen and played with my own hands but as you know everything has its own flaws which for MGS4 is too much cut scenes and the game is extremely short it doesn't worth the $65.50 i payed for it length wise but good graphics, good story telling and i like the lil joke kojima said about xbox360, very classy. To say the truth, i was kinda expecting another uncharted drakes fortune but ended being disappointed. Everyone must play uncharted, its the best game for PS3, astonishing graphics.

BEST GAME EVER!!!

AMAZING stuff have been already said about this game. I only have to say that it is all TRUE!!!!

Perfect in almost every way!

The game is awesome, the the graphics are incredible, the action is superb, the improved controls are great and the story is exciting... there is no doubt that is one of the best games i've ever played! The reason i put 4 stars and not 5 is because of the cinematics: most of them are very long and sometimes very booring too. But that doesn't keep the game to be very enterteining.

SPOILER!!!: Going back to Shadow Moses Island with all this new graphics is something that i will never forget!

An Edited Review...

I just deleted my first review, because admitedly, I wrote it while still early on in the game. For the sake of comparison, this was it:

"I've owned the PS3 for about six months now, and MGS4 is in the top 3 games I've played for the system. The only other games that even come close are Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction.

If your reading these reviews, then chances are you've heard about things like mandatory installs, long cut-scenes, and a mediocre online experience. Well, you can forget everything negative you've heard about these things, because the game play and story are so good, so engaging, so fun, that any tiny little annoyances that you *may* experience are worth it."

Okay. While I still agree mostly with what I said, I HAD to drop my rating down to 4 stars after finishing the game. I didn't mind the long cut scenes through most of the game, but in ACT 5 the ratio of game to cutscene tipped in favor of cutscenes.

I won't go into detail to avoid spoilers, but there was A LOT of story to wrap up by the end, and while half of it was amazing, the other half started to bore me.

The bottom line is this: the game was a 5 star game until the story became too unwieldy. It was anticlimactic. Too much to wrap up. When Drebin started giving a history lesson on the Patriots, they lost me. The end of this game may be even more long-winded than the end of The Lord of the Rings.

So, I still love the game. I'm still going to play it again (skipping the cutscenes this time), and I still recommend it. But now, I'm starting to agree with the people who say that maybe, just maybe, this story was geared more towards the longtime MGS fans who know all the back story.
