Perhaps the best game this generation of games so far. The seamless meld of game and movie is flawless in execution and serves to draw the player into the experience.
Metal Gear is not what it used to be.

Pros:
* Gameplay that any fan of the series will be familiar with.
* The return of favorite characters.
* Beautiful cutscenes.
* Great continuity.
* Includes Metal Gear Online
* Short load times and huge maps.
Cons:
* To many of these beautiful cutscenes.
* Gameplay is just more of the same.
* Story has to many twists and becomes completely surreal.
* Would all of the worlds governments consent to letting the U.S. ID control their guns?
* Metal Gear used to be more grounded in more reality. (Sure it was always had fantasy elements and sci-fi but some of the events take the cake when characters are able to throw lightning at people.)
* Metal Gear Online requires update right out of the box and you must sign up for 3 different usernames and passwords to log in the first time.
* Corny
* Must wait periodically for installs to finish.
* Killing the beauties purify them? Apparently killing your enemy gives them peace of spirit? I don't get it either.
* Snake isn't the buttkickingest (is that a word) character. Obviously we need ninjas for this role.
I'll admit I enjoyed MGS4 overall but some of the events are very corny and will have you just shaking your head. I did enjoy the short load times but the installs were irritating especially if you go to play it a 2nd time it will force you to install previous levels over again as each install appears to overwrite the one before. At times I felt like sure this is corny and I just want to play. This isn't that uncommon in a MGS game but here it was taken to extreme. Just because something is on a new system doesn't make it immediately better than what has come before it and I'm finding out that a lot of other reviewers are just blindly saying it's awesome because it's on PS3 and it's the newest game in their favorite series. This should not cover up for serious flaws in the story which is much easier to review than the gameplay because there is so much of it. Concerning the gameplay I could often run across the map. There aren't any penalties for being discovered other than one map and for a covert tactical game thats odd as you can just shoot your way through each map if you'd like. All in all even though I finished the game I wasn't as impressed with the game as I expected and was led to believe. I'm very impressed with the movies and wow it's on a blu-ray so I don't need to change the discs or use a memory card. It's a case of too much and not enough. Give me less movie and more game. I love my PS3 and the MGS series but this is the weakest of them.
Closure for fans, frustration for gamers

As any Metal Gear fan will tell you, the story and the way it's told is just as important as anything in this game. And as the final chapter in Solid Snake's legacy, it functions as the wrap up of all aspects of the story left behind for about 20 years. And that's it's problem. After about 25 hours of sitting back and listening to explanations that seemed to be pushed into logic, I was not satisfied with my investment. It seemed that the more I advanced into the game, the less I played and even knowing how MGS game play out, I was still surprised at how little time I was getting to actually have fun.
I won't argue about production values or graphics and sound. This game looks and sounds above all else on the PS3. But as a game, as something I'd like to interact with and be an active participant in, it just didn't fulfill my needs.
Simply not my type of game...

I have to state up-front that I only got MGS4 as a part of the 80Gb PS3 bundle. I bought the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and not as a gaming platform. I've spent almost 15 years playing PC games and have had a 360 for the last two years.
As for the game itself, although visually stunning, the game-play and the incredibly long cut-scenes were just not for me. I lasted about 5 hours with it and then took it down to the store and traded it for a new copy of Resistance: The Fall of Man. Shooting creatures and blowing things up...My kind'a game!
I have to add that I think the PS3 is a fine gaming platform and I have already pre-ordered Resistance 2...so it will be doing more than playing BD movies.
It's no COD4 but still a very Solid game.

Bought MGS4 after rave reviews by critics and fans alike. The previews are insane and graphically and story-wise the game does not disappoint. I think this is a classic Metal Gear game though where stealth and strategy as gameplay interwoven with phenomenal cut scenes.
Although the critics have said the gameplay can be equivalent to a third person shooter much like a COD is. I don't agree that the gameplay is nearly as seamless and fun. The vast amounts of items and weapons typically seen in Metal Gear games is there but the targeting, gunplay, etc. isn't done as well.
Overall a solid game but really will be enjoyed by true Metal Gear fans.

The game delivered what is was supposed to. I didn't mid the long cut scenes or the load times. It was a good addition to my slowly growing PS3 collection.

This is the most Epic of all mgs, have a great gameplay and graphics, but is not the best, mgs1 is still a best game and mgs3 have a history more complex

I really didn't like this game after the first day of playing it. I am new to the Metal Gear Solid series, and after getting used to the interface, I started to enjoy it. I really like the humor scenes and the game play is quite addicting.
My only Nitpick is I wish I could drive vehicles.
A Good Movie

The gameplay in Metal Gear Solid 4 is exactly as a MGS fan might expect, and more. Like Call of Duty 4, each part of the game features a different style of play, and they even throwback to the original game with your expedition into Shadow Moses.
The CG, in comparison to most other cinematic games, are stunning. The graphics are breathtaking, the literary quality is pleasing, and the seams between movie and gameplay--aside from loading pages--are blended well.
The problem with the game, however, is that these two aspects are poorly balanced. There are a large number of CG clips which make the gameplay seem like more of a break than the movie. Between the fifty or so movies throughout the game, there are some "clips" of gameplay that only last a couple of minutes, and throw you right back into another long CG. Because I mostly played at night, I often found myself waking up to a save screen after falling asleep somewhere in the ten to forty minute scene. Because of this, I found myself bored with the game because I could not find a way to stay involved with the storyline.
The ending was a little confusing, though very dramatic, and very long!
Don't finish this game unless you have an hour to sit through the final scene, as well as two rolls of credits. My excitement for the MGS bonuses I knew would follow the ending was nearly depleted by the time I got there.
I would still recommend this game to anyone, and I am currently talking my girlfriend into playing it. Hopefully she will hit the buttons in time to see the secret flashbacks--I usually put the controller down from inactivity and missed this probable bonus from the game (not looking forward to trying this one on another playthrough!)
