It may be long, with many talking scenes, and story.
But this is Metal Gear Solid, of course it will have that.
Treat it like a movie.

Overall, best game...ever?

Worth getting a PS3!!!

When I heard this game was coming out bundled with an 80Gb PS3, I knew this was the time to upgrade to PS3 from my PS2. I've played every Metal Gear version since the original one for the NES, and I've loved them all. This series started and defined the stealth-type genre of games, so for those who bought this looking for a mindless shoot-em-up, you've obviously not been paying attention for the last 20 years (yes, that's how long ago this series started). As for the cut scenes, again, if you don't like them, you must probably just buy random games at the stores that you've heard of but know nothing about, because if you've ever read about any of the MG series, you'd know that all of these games have cut scenes to enhance the story and it's a big part of the game. I for one love them, it's like a movie and game in one.
Anyway, with these things in mind, I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a smart, tactical, well-written game that likely will be the last of the Metal Gear Series.

Visually dynamic, well written, good (abeit limited) gameplay...but too many cut scenes

OK, first off. I have completed the game - twice. I have played every Metal Gear Series. i love the concept, the storyline and the game play.

The storyline in MGS4 is incredibly well written. But around 60-70% of the time you spend playing the game, you listen and watch cut scenes and side stories. In several instances, you play 2 minutes to watch a 10-15 minute cut scene and at least once there is about a 40 minute cut scene.

Don't get me wrong. The game play is fun, when you play it. The artistic rendering is dead on. The replayability is there. There are dozens of weapons and you can get rewarded based on how you run through the game...that is, whether you creep around silently, or run straight through killing everything.
All the old characters come back, in one sense or another. And the final battle is a lot of fun. Not to mention the various bosses in between are clearly and deliberately drawn/created to be as sultry and demure as possible. Kudos to the graphic team.

Buy the game. Play the game. You will want to see the the scenes for the story line alone, but for me at least, it resulted in a sense that I only really played the game for about 3-4 hours and watched/listened for about 6.

4 out of 5.

Dare I say best game ever?

Okay maybe it's not the best game ever, but it is very close. I would say it is in the top 10 games of the last decade. Hands down. This game sucks you in and doesn't let you go.

Long cutscenes are nothing new to people who have played the MGS series before. 98% of the cutscenes are shown in real time and display the true graphic brilliance of Kojimas design team. The game has an excellent soundtrack and comes with an in-game ipod to play other tracks that you can collect along the way.

The game wraps up the Metal Gear Solid series very well, and makes you wish there was more. This is the first game since Final Fantasy X that makes me care about the characters. Which is why I feel this game is so awesome. It even manages to find a way to reinvent itself and yet doesn't lose it's identity in the process. If sneaking isn't for you; feel free to gun your way through.

Without a doubt you'll love this game, no matter who you are. What's even cooler is that Konami released a Metal Gear Database on the PSN that details the entire saga. So you can inform yourself before or after you play the game on the metal gear universe. Why are you still reading this review? Order it now!!

The only bad part of this game is that it ends =*[

First off, I'm a huge fan of the MGS series and have follewed it since its inception, including the original Metal Gear games on NES(Not of the "solid" series, but still pertaining to snake's background).

I'm not going to write a huge review of the gameplay because it tops almost any other game ever made, without remorse. The graphic's, score, story, and every other feature meet all expectations and anyone who says otherwise is being overly critical on a game that they would have probably been critical on even if it weren't this good, just because of all the hype.

This game truelly marks the beginning of a new era in video games, where it finally attempts to and succeeds at reaching a viable artform. Mr Kojima, I know you will not read this, but I want to thank you with all sincerity for giving me one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences of my life, one I am sure to love reliving years down the line.

This game had better beat grand theft auto 4 for game of the year as well...great game that is, but when you couple gameplay that is slightly better and a story that completelly blows away the laughable load of crap the "story" is in that game, you can't debate who the winner is. Snake, R.I.P. wherever you are =*[

Snake! Snake! Snaaaaaake!

First of all, buy this game. I will say only one thing about this game: thank you Hideo Kojima. Who is Sam Fisher? Now, let's wait for God of War 3.
That's all.

This game isn't only worth the hype, it exceeds all expectations.

Graphics - Amazing and will blow you away, haven't seen anything like it this gen, great attention to details

Gameplay - I can't stress enough on how much fun it is. You can play it the way you like. If your into some adrenaline rush, you can blast you're way through with more than 60 weapons and upgrades. or if your into stealth, you can infiltrate through the enemy lines with the help of octocamo and some really cool gadgets.

Sound - Sounds are a big feature of this game, utilizing the blu-ray space really made a difference. Sounds and music are very clear and will keep you intertained.

Value - This game is worth every penny and you will wonder why you spent $60 on all the other games. Weather your a fan of MGS or not, you are going to enjoy this game for sure. You will want to finish the game again the second you complete it. So many things to unlock in single player will keep you busy for a long time. I didn't even talked about MGO!

This game is a true masterpeice and was given a full score from the big three (IGN, GamePro, Gamespot) so Ignore some "attention seekers" who are trying to degrade this game.

Nothing else like it

If your idea of a video game is to mindlessly shot at everything that moves, this is not the game for you. Never was. Stay with Duke Nukem.

MGS4 is simply more sophisticated in its artistic presentation than anything else to date. You will need to get your arms around the fact that almost half of the time is dedicated to (rendered in real-time) cut-scenes, but you can skip many of them. I find I actually enjoy them as I snoop about the rooms with Metal Gear Mk II.

It's a thinkers game. If you don't have one, an investment in a good 6.1 surround system will double the enjoyment. About 120 hours of entertainment for the average player on all difficulty levels, so it a great value.

Well worth the money paid!

This game is great! I have yet to beat it. I like the fact that you can customize your weapons, add silencer, laser, flashlight, M203 Launcher, Hand grip. The game is alot of fun, there are however alot of video scenes but it makes for a really good game. And you can skip the videos if you want to.

The online play is fun too. somethings are a bit confusing and I cant seem to get my Bluetooth head set to work with the online game. There are fun games where one person is Snake (main character) and the rest of the team is hunting Snake and killing the other team.

The game is really exciting in alot of parts. And I would reccomend it to anyone that is a fan of shooter games.

Cinematic Motion Picture Game

First I would like to tell you some of my favorite games as to give you a better view of my background: Fight Night Round 3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Call of Duty 4, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Ghost Recon series, and Halo series.

With only 5 hours of game play I would like to give you my review:

The game is very cinematic but how it was implemented was cool; the cut scenes give you key points on the past, present, and future events. It feels more like a motion picture that you're in total control of rather than a standalone game or movie. The load times are very amusing because commercials with various channels were installed as to keep you interested in what is to come next; that was very interesting rather than having a blank screen with a completion meter. MGS4 used much of the blu-ray disc capacity.
The video graphics and sound on MGS4 are outstanding. I have a 7.1 component system setup with a Samsung 46" LCD (LN46A650). From dust to snipers on roof tops, the visually pleasing graphics depict every detail that any HDTV will pick up. You cannot ask for anything better at this point in time when it comes to video game display. The colors pop out at you and the textures are very noticeable in this game. The sounds are crisp and separately channeled to give you a more realistic feeling that you are inside a true war zone.
The weapons are upgradeable and customizable (is that a word). As with any game the further you progress the better the weapon choices. You get an array of selectable weapons at any given point to switch between. That feature makes the game interesting and challenging.
The game play itself is smooth. From prone position to crawling, you never lose control beyond what you are actually inputting in the joystick. Options were provided for you to tweak your controls and display to desired parameters. I haven't gone on line with this game so I cannot give you any review on that aspect. This is a must buy game for PS3. If you own one get this game.
It is way to early to call it "Game of the Year" because there are several other games coming out this year. But this game will be in the running, no doubt! Killzone 2 seems to be another game to change the gaming industry.
