Graphics, Gameplay, Audio, Cinematics... this game has it all. I was never much of a metal gear fan but this has restored my faith in gaming. My mind was blown the minute I started and it had me on the edge of my seats until the very last credit rolled.
If you need to play one game in your lifetime, this is it. You will not play a better game.
GREAT!!!

I purchases the PS3 bundle just for this game. I am not really what you would consider a gamer, but I am blown away by the HD graphics of this game.
The plot is good, there are numerous weapons to choose from and customize. All around a great game.
What a great game!

Since I have only played one MGS game before in PS2 and didnt even finish it, I wasnt expecting much from MGS4. In fact, I bought the game because of the hype.
The first couple of hours were so so. Good graphics (the intro scene where you ride the truck was a bit disappointing though), somewhat boring gameplay and didnt really understand exactly how/when enemies can spot me. But once I understood the game mechanics (thread meter, cqc moves, etc) and the story picks up, WOW this game is fun. Like others have said, you have choices when it comes to getting things done: stealth, action or both.
I heard (havent tried yet) the multiplayer part of the game (MGO) is a fun team based tactical game. That certainly adds value to this already outstanding single player campaign.
Best Next-Gen Experience So Far

SOOOO... I fired up the PS3 and plugged this in. 40 minutes later I killed my first bad guy. If you don't have a problem watching the best of the action and playing the leftovers, this game is for you.
MGS4 has garnered a lot of praise based on technical merit. The colors are gray and washed out and flat textures abound. I'm not saying the game doesn't look good, it looks great, but the first time I played (stress PLAYED) Gears of War, my jaw rested on the floor for the duration of the game. As far as the "new and improved" control scheme, there were still times that I felt like I was fighting the controls. Games like Call of Duty 4, Ghost Recon & Gears of War have not only sped up the movement, but made the controls feels second nature almost immediatley. There were time in MGS4 that I felt like I was fighting the controls, and for a game that depends on stealth and the small movements, I was frusterated too often (I also have the same issues with Splinter Cell - so it could just be me).
The story is redonkulous. Critics are in love with the cinematic presentation, but come on. For as much dialouge as has been packed into this story, it borders on incoherrent. Hey, I have no problem with a silly sci-fi / action story, but at least let me play the good parts.
So in a nutshell, if you like the last couple of entries, this one won't dissapoint, but if you're on the fence or weren't a fan in the past, this one isn't going to light your world on fire.
good game. cinematics too long

Without a doubt, MGS4 is a masterpiece of art and science. Konami has raised the bar once again, and you can read all the praise in other reviews. Instead, I'll talk about some of the things that I found problematic which detracted from an otherwise stellar experience:
BAD BAD BAD:
1. completely **IDIOTIC** friendlies AI. Rebels and militia are absolutely useless and only serve to catch bullets. Cannon fodder would be a more appropriate description for these flesh puppets throwing themselves at the meat grinder. They are devoid of any type of strategy or marksmanship and yell stupid things like "Charge!" (South America stage). They don't crawl, or aim, and stand up under fire. About the only thing they are good for is Drebin points, as you can pick up their weapons and sell them.
2. endlessly respawning enemies and rebels/militia. Nothing breaks the realism like endless waves and waves of characters. In the Middle East stage, enemy soldiers respawn from an alley as soon as you turn your back!
3. disappearing bodies and items. With the example set by Ninja Gaiden 2 of dead bodies staying around, this is definitely a technical do-able.
4. WAY TOO MUCH TALKING. Good, concise dialog writing has never been a hallmark of the Metal Gear Series, but Kojima went all out with long winded monologues. Some of the speeches are cinematics and some are just slightly animated slideshows. Some cutscenes on for 5-10 minutes. I ended up skipping some of them because they were so boring.
This is probably the biggest complaint of most people. The game is less of a game and more of an interactive movie broken up by gameplay elements.
5. The game is actually pretty short. Only 5 Acts. It's a lot shorter than MGS2, and less varied in the number and style of the bosses.
6. lifeless voice-acting. There are some good talents here, but many of the performances seem to be phone in. For example, Lee Merriweather of Catwoman fame from the campy Batman series is Big Mama, but she's just reading the lines passionlessly. Phil LaMarr is excellent as Vamp though.
7. long install times the first time around, which DO NOT go away the second and subsequent time you play them! I'm on my second run through the game and it still says I need to install between each act.
8. very crappy Metal Gear Online experience. cumbersome and needlessly complicated interface, and very hard to quickly switch weapons. COD4 is the standard. MGO has a lot to live up to. MGO is not a lot of fun right now for me, but maybe it'll get better.
GOOD GOOD GOOD:
1. amazing graphics. duh. MGS4 is by far the best looking game on any console. some cutscenes look almost real. in particular when Raiden's face in the ending.
2. LOTS of guns. about 60. which, miraculously, you can carry all at once. Lots of fun to shoot.
3. much replay value and lots of secrets and unlockables. you keep all the weapons from the first run of the game after you start over.
This is a game every PS3 owner and action game fan must have. It really shows off the PS3's capabilities.
and a note to all the fanboys voting this review as not helpful, are you even reading this review? I said this game is great. I does have some flaws, or are you too sensitive to any form of constructive criticism of this game?
Finally...

I have been waiting for this game ever since it was announced. As a huge fan of the MGS series, this game was probably the best game ever for me. I bought it at 7:00 AM today. I played for a few minutes and then went to school. I am currently in Music and cannot stop thinking about it.
JUST BUY THIS GAME. It's graphics are amazing and the gameplay is even better. This game is the highlight of the PS3. It is what will give Sony the boost it needs. BTW my PSNID is azadiscool so feel free to add me.

This is easily the most epic game ever created. It ties in wonderfully to the previous games in the series, yet explains itself well enough for someone new.
The gameplay has been refined to a level better than any of the previous games in the series, and perhaps better than any other military stealth action third person game.
The graphics are absolutely mind blowing and probably the best overall graphics I have seen. It may lack the super texture quality of Uncharted (the previous best looking game due to amazing character detail and textures that really POP), but it pulls off graphics that are simply stunning that are well rounded and very realistic.
The sound, let me tell you. If you have a surround sound setup, you are in for a treat! Going into a warzone and hearing bullets whiz by your head really adds to the atmosphere. The sound and music quality does not get better than this.
I love the cutscenes in the game. They tell a wonderful story and have some of the best "digital acting" you will ever see. Hideo Kojima (the director of this game) is a master and is one of the top developers in the world, along with his team, Kojima Productions.
Gameplay - A+
Graphics - A+
Sound - A+
Story - A+
But that's not all! Metal Gear Solid 4 also has a very deep and robust online mode called Metal Gear Online. Once you have had your fill of single player (which there is enough content to keep you playing again and again) you can jump online to battle it out with your friends.
Konami has already released some FREE downloadable content for the game and promise to release more in the future. In fact, today (6-19-08) we will have a comprehensive Metal Gear Solid Database to download from the Playstation Store. I know I will be getting that!

I just got my metal gear 4 limited edition!!!! waaa!!! I bought this in gamestop and it's only exclusive in that store. my brothers and I waited for hours outside the gamestop just for this game. we were like 60 of us waiting outside the store. we were few because BESTBUY competed with gamestop, so they also have this signing of the cast and producers at their store. there was a lot of MGS4 fun there. like about 300 or more than something. it was fun. really. and I also saw david hayter!!!
ok, I haven't played this game yet but im sure that this game will rock the ps3 world!!!! I'm a die hard fun of MGS4 and I played all the MGS series. I've seen the graphics the gameplay everything and it's totally awesome!
all I can say is.. WOW... this is my 2nd review, so this time I have already played the game. this game is really amazing. my brothers and I were amazed on the graphics, the gameplay, storyline, everything. I like it when playing the game because it's like your playing the cut scenes. The graphics of the cut scenes and the actual game are almost the same. this is really the game of the year! good job kojima! too bad because this is the last saga of solid snake. tsk!
who's the hottest? NAOMI? MERYL? or MARYROSE??? I pick NAOMI!!!! she's hot! even she's just a fiction.
good game, but no classic

It's a good enough game, but the fact you're sitting through many *many* hours of cutscenes might be enough to rub some people the wrong way. I understand the series is supposed to be about lengthy cutscenes in order to tell a very good, highly detailed story that's honestly unlike anything we've seen in a video game before. But the little amount of gameplay you get to experience prevents the game from being a classic. Still, for RPG fans, and especially storyline fans, you can't go wrong with what's presented here.
