Over-hyped, but still a masterpiece...

I've just played through the whole game, watched every FMV and listened every codec comms. I even sit through the whole credit screen (2 of them actually). Let me tell you what I think...
First of all great presentation. Enough praise on that already, so let's look past that.
Game play: this is a Metal Gear Solid game - every bit of it! The gene has been defined 10 years ago and brought back to life again today. We all know how hard it is for a game to stick to its original game play and at the same time still be fun even to the veterans (Alone in the Dark anyone?). I'm confident to say that MGS4 has done it. Masterfully. (You may argue about camera angles and such, but that's a problem with all the 3rd-person games in general, not specific to MGS4)
Story & plot: I agree that Kojima is a little overdo on this department. (Maybe he wants to make a movie?) However the story is consistent and not getting in the way. FMVs are a bit long but you can always skip them. The plot provides clear goals and is interesting enough to have me engaged through out the whole game. It also give every character enough background so you actually care about them, or hate them, depending on your tastes (Johnny!)
Level design: Brilliant! Fun, unique & non-repeatitive, challenging enough to get your adrenaline pumping but not too difficult, stick to the story with clear goal. This is one of the hardest part for a game to make it right, and I have to say MGS4 pulled it off masterfully.
All the other things: another area where this game shines - weapon design, in-game hints, control mechanics, menu & inventory system... every little pieces fits together smoothly to give you an over-all well polished feeling of a great game.
Once in a while a game came alone, which seemed to do everything right, and it's a pleasure to play it. MGS4 is definitely one of them. For that I give it my 5 stars wholeheartedly.
Snnnaaaaaaaakkkkkkeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

Prior to this game I had not played anything in this series since the first game on Nintendo in the late eighties to early nineties.I was a bit skeptical to buy so late as well thinking I would miss the plot and as such the experience would be for naught.
Fortunately ,I was wrong , the game was terrific.I initially got some problems ,during the first hour or so but eventually got the hang of it.
It was also of little concern joining the story line given the obviously long gap of time. The use of the downloadable guide was good enough to catch up with what I did not understand.
I will not go into specifics but the game takes you to another level of gaming just as the first game in the eighties did to start my gaming experience.
To the point where I am bored by replaying the other action games I currently own.
As for the famous(to some infamous ) cinematics, I find them enjoyable and necessary. After fighting through some of the scenes it was relaxing to sit back and take in the action without actually quitting the game.It made me set to continue battling on.
All in all I recommend this game to any enthusiast or newcomer to gaming.Even my girlfriend who is not a gamer was intrigued by this game and asked me to play only if she was around so she could follow the story.
Great job Kojima!!
Fantastic -- Hasn't left the drive slot since purchase.

I'm not going to get into a detailed and thorough review of the game, since this has been done already. I just have a few points to mention. So you know where I'm coming from, I played through MGS1 and MGS2, but only played MGS3 for a short period at a friend's house.
This game has not been ousted from the PS3 since the day I bought it. I have found it to be almost infinitely replayable, which is pretty uncommon these days. I've completed the game 5 times so far, and I'm about halfway through my 6th run. I'm already looking forward to my 7th run and figuring out what I want to accomplish that time around.
Sure, the cutscenes are sometimes long (often with the standard helping of MGS cornball), but they are well done, and worth watching the first time around. You can easily skip them on subsequent playthroughs, as you already know what's going to happen. :) At any rate, that particular complaint never really made sense to me -- I LIKE it when a game takes a while to get through. And I'm not so impatient that I get upset if I'm not pushing buttons every second.
I have tried numerous methods to complete the game -- pure stealth, pure speed, and kill-everything-in-my-path, and they are all rewarding experiences in their own way. I think my 7th run will be "Nothing But Knife". :-)
The Metal Gear series just got a new fan!

I was reluctant to purchase this game because A) Sneak games like Hitman, Splinter Cell, and Thief are not for me and B) I heard it was mostly cut scenes. Four hours in and I am completely hooked.
This game has something special going for it and I am not sure what it is. It could be the painstaking attention to detail. It could be the quirky Japanese influence. It could be the tight controls, beautiful graphics, storytelling. To tell the truth, I don't know what it is, but what I do know is there's nothing quite like the Metal Gear series.
This is a must buy for all PS3 owners.
Fun game.....BUT......

The good:
Fun game, nice graphics, decent gameplay.....Decent amount of fun factor!
The Bad:
VERY, VERY LONG movie sequences, (VERY BORING, too). Seems to be more movie sequences then actual gameplay. Outlandish storyline (borderline "cheesy"), akward controls.....ESPECIALLY when trying to use a sniper scope!!!!
Conclusion:
Not a horrible game, BUT, the game could have......SHOULD HAVE......been 10 times better! A lot more thought should have went into this game before releasing this game.
Amazed (Again!)

Over the top realism, cheesy scenario, questionable gameplay

MGS4 treads the line between a video game and a (bad) movie. Graphics are positively stunning, no other game comes even close to the level of detail that MGS4 provides; every bit in the game is very carefully simulated (save the magical backpack used by Snake to stow away all the crap he carries) from all motions to the breasts of the few female characters. Gun afficionados will probably enjoy the realism with which each weapon is reproduced. Sound effects are awesome too so it makes for a really immersive experience but...
There is a but, in the form of a truly underwhelming scenario served by the longest cut-scenes ever. If you're a fan, you'll revel in the umpteenth reference to the earlier installments of the series. But then again, you've probably stopped reading this after laying your eyes on the title. If you're not a fan, you'll most likely find these boring. Acting is tedious, and your usual suspension of disbelief won't even suffice.
You've been warned. Maybe worth buying second-hand.
Good bye snake

Probably The Best Game Ever.

If replayability is important to you when buying games, I highly recommend that this game be a rental. I'm not being partisan here, please read on.
Visually, the game is high quality. I enjoyed the story, as I did with previous MGS games though, for me, I still feel that the story isn't as interesting as say HalfLife but MGS4 was entertaining.
What I think prospective players should know is that the gameplay is secondary, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Long cut scenes is only part of it. Yes, you'll spend more time watching the cutscenes than playing the game once you get the controls down (this is completely honest) but the linearity of the gameplay makes the replay value very, very low.
So I'd almost rank this game as more of an interactive movie experience. It's no wonder that the developers are so high on the Bluray format because it has so much film on it Bluray was necessary.
Just like regular films, if you love the movie, it's worth seeing/playing over again right? If not, and for most of us I don't think I could rewatch this game to get $60 worth. I recommend this be a rental.
Unfortunately, the bigtime fans are so avid about squelching criticism because I'm sure this comment will be heavily buried. I hope it was useful to the rest of you.
