This Metal Gear is the best Metal Gear.. In terms of story, game play, and presentation. The presentation in this game is the best I've seen this generation of gaming. The story ties the majority of the loose ends left by MGS1, 2, and 3. Furthermore, the controls are fixed. If you've played older MGSs then you know how cumbersome the controls could be MGS4 fixes all this and makes it simple and makes it work.
If you're a Metal Gear fan you should already have this game. If you're not a MGS fan this game is still Metal Gear, don't think that it doesn't have long cut scenes and that the game play has changed enough to make you love this game or the series. If you're interested this is a great place to start and play the other games as prequels. Have Fun!!! and buy buy buy.
Best PS3 game I've played so far.

I've played quite a few PS3 games this year. Out of all the games I've played, this one is the best. Metal Gear Solid 4 has better in-game and cut scene graphics than Uncharted, more fun single player game play than any other shooter, and a fantastically compelling storyline. All told, it is the best I've seen so far.
Considering retiring from video games

Why? Because I don't think I'll ever play a game as good as this one. This game has everything. The story is on par with Star Wars, and don't be surprised if you get a bit choked up. There are a ton of weapons, many of which are customizable. Also, you often have to deal with unique situations where you aren't just sneaking around and then killing bosses- recall the torture chamber from MGS I.
If you don't like long cut scenes, still don't skip them, especially if you are the slightest bit intellectual or artistic. There are often points where the game seems to stroke Sony's ego, but they provided nothing more than comic relief, which I welcomed. I can't blame them, this game was the one to save the PS3, and it did. This game was well worth the cost of getting a PS3, even if this is the only game you get for that system. It brought back memories of the Playstation's glory days, when Final Fantasy VII, Grand Turismo, Metal Gear Solid I, and God of War ruled the land.
First Time Metal Gear Solid Player! COMPLETELY AMAZED.

It has been a long time since I have felt this way about a videogame. Since I played it for the first time, all i can think about is getting back to it.
First, I have never played a Metal Gear Solid game before. Therefore, I was very skeptical about picking this one up. After all the hype, I couldn't resist.
After the game installed, my jaw immediately dropped at the first scene. The presentation is impeccable. I felt like I was in a movie. The story is masterful and the acting is engrossing. What can I say about the graphics and the sound other than they are the best I have ever seen and heard, and I have a 360 and a PS3 and have played gems such as Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Have a Wii too, but lets try to keep this serious :)
Pro's:
1. Great AI
2. Amazing Gameplay
3. Engrossing Story that is very complex and serious
4. Endless Customization of Weapons
5. Ingenious game elements (I love the cardboard box!)
6. Tons of Extra's (SNAKE HAS AN IPOD THAT YOU CAN LISTEN TO MGS
PODCASTS AND MUSIC FROM PREVIOUS GAMES ON WHILE YOUR SNEAKING
AROUND LEVELS).
Con's
1. Some may say that the long cut scenes are a con, but they are all extremely interesting and advance the plot. I love them, but I have to mention them because some people may not like that.
2. Mandatory Install: There is an 8 minutes install before you can play the game and two more two minute installs before chapters. Hardly a pain, but need mention none the less. They are funny though, as Kojima gives you lots of hints and little information during the install.
As I have tried to convey before, this game is a masterpiece and sets the standard for games of this generation. It has been a while since I have been glued to the screen like this. It should not be missed by ANYONE, even those who haven't played the series before like me!
10/10 (or 5/5 for Amazon's sake) for being the defining title of this generation of gaming (to date).
A fitting end to a 21 year series

Since MGS4 is the culmination of a 21 year long series, a review of several paragraphs seems inadequate. My first impression of the game, on the other hand, spanned only three letters: Wow! Booting the game on my HDTV, I was greeted by a stunning rendering of Solid Snake, casually puffing a smoke as the game performed its initial install.
I have to pause here to mention that since so many PS3 games have hard drive installs, I consider it a characteristic of the platform. Therefore any praise or criticism should be paid to the system, not the individual games.
This game begins, as one would expect, with a cutscene. The cutscenes use the game's engine so I almost didn't notice when actual play began. I say almost because unlike MGS3: Snake Eater, which deposited you in an area devoid of enemies, Snake starts this chapter feet first into a war zone.
This point is subtle, but important- especially to the criticism the series has endured from people who simply aren't fans of the sneaking genre. While this game's heart still beats in tune with the stealth genre it spawned, there is plenty of action. The game's new over-the-shoulder mechanic makes this possible. Gunplay is smooth and very intuitive. Not once did I experience the frustrating, wonky alert phases of previous titles. If there is still any room for improvement, I sure don't know where it is.
The implementation of the new shooting mechanic, in turn, paved the way for other gameplay options that helped add some spice to the MGS recipe and effectively prevented monotony from rearing its ugly head. Entire sections of action, with several enemies charging a room at once felt natural and fluid. Even vehicle chases, with Snake manning the weaponry, functioned so smoothly that the player was able to be immersed in the tension of the moment.
And speaking of tension, there is no shortage here. One of my favourite levels challenged Snake to follow an NPC to his hideout, which sounds simple. Of course you must avoid being seen by the guards, but to add a layer of complexity, the NPC can't be detected either! You also can't let the NPC see you or he will be spooked and run off- possibly into the waiting arms of the enemy. So you must move through the area, incapacitating (or killing) enemy soldiers and clearing a path for the NPC, all the while staying out of his way until he eventually makes it to his hideout.
In most games, levels like the one I just described could easily drag on and on, but not in MGS4. Here, each area lasts long enough to allow you to get comfortable, but not to the point of boredom. Just when I started to feel like I was finished with an area, I was finished with that area. To have such perfect pacing was truly a refreshing feeling.
All of the game's play elements are flawless, from graphics to sound, even the new Octocamo, which automatically matches your camo to your surroundings like a chameleon. But the glue that holds it all together is the storytelling. With this game, Hideo Kojima has outdone himself. Sure, there were beautiful, moving (and long!) cutscenes but the icing on the cake was how he managed to tie the entire series together in such creative fashion. I was personally tickled by the ipod that allows you to play music from previous games instead of the normal background music. Beyond that there were flashbacks in the cutscenes, visits from familiar but forgotten characters, trips to previous locales, and even a few very satisfying surprises like... no, I won't ruin them for you.
During the 25 hours it took me to reach the end, I was so captivated that I had little desire to play anything else. The ending itself was moving and bittersweet. I found myself hoping that this was not the final chapter for Solid Snake, but it is true that all good things must come to an end- and what an end! If you have any love at all for the stealth genre or the Metal Gear series, this is an absolute must-play game. In every way, it is a perfect end to a truly outstanding series.
Incredible in every respect

For the record, I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I do enjoy playing ocassionally and have been gaming for the past 20 years. This is also the first MGS game I have ever played. I also got bored after playing GTA4 for 1 hour.
In my opinion, MGS4 is one of the 3 greatest games ever created (along with Mario 3 for NES and FF7 for PS1).
The graphics are mind-numbingly good. I feel like I'm playing an interactive movie with a great story and amazing production values.
Many people complain that the PS3 doesn't have any killer apps. That certainly changed on June 12th. You should get a PS3 just for this game.
Worth all the hype!

First off I've never played a Metal Gear game before this one, so I'm not a long time fan. The only reason I got the game was because of all the hype surrounding it. Well this game lives up to the hype and more, I wish I could give it more stars. This is what the PS3 has been waiting for!

There are many glowing reviews on here and I don't want to waste my time saying what other already have. I just wanted to add that I had never before played a Metal Gear game except the original for the NES in 87' when I was 4. If you own a PS3 or are planning on getting one, you owe it to yourself to play this masterpiece. You can do some background reading on Wikipedia to prepare you for the gripping story, though many things are explained in the Hollywood movie quality cut scenes, and the controls are easy to pick up on (especially with a virtual training ground to test your weapons and close quarter combat). This is easily one of the 5 best games I have ever played.

I really don't like calling Metal Gear 4 a game, but more like a fine piece of art.Without giving the story away for those who haven't played this, all I can say is it blew my mind.At times it was almost overwhelming to see so many familiar faces returning, but it was a brilliant way to close out Snake's final mission.
When it comes to story, the gameplay, the sound, you name it,I have no complaints whatsoever.Having grown up with the Metal Gear series, and anticipating this final installment for years I can now rest easy and call it perfection.
If you haven't played any of the previous MG games,it would probably be a good idea to at least play the first three Solid games before this one.Things could get very confusing if you are not familiar with this story.
Thank you Hideo for all the great memories :)
