This is a really great game with a good variety. The only real problem i saw is that it is short. Im talking about 8 hours if your a good gamer. The controls can be a bit difficult to get used to but after about an hour they start to flow. Great variety of moves, you can do about anything: slash stab you can even impale demons if you can get them on the ground. once you get Kaede(the female hero) who is a ninja you can jump over your opponent and slit his throat. Also if you beat the game and get an S rating you get the extra costumes which add to replay value. Who doesnt wanna see a giant panda bear with a huge sword cutting up demons.

I just started this game last night for the first time. I am enjoying it a good deal. :)
Graphics: Great!
Controls: Good, but my only huge complaint is that I really wish that you could use the joy stick. :/
Camera: Same as Resident evil games, which is fine but, I kind of wish I had a little control.
Combat: Terrific! I love the lock on button. Makes fighting multiple enemies easy and smooth.
Story: Yep! :)
Dubbing: Terrible and laughable!! LOL I HIGHLY recommend playing this game in Japanese with English subtitles. :D
Overall: Great! I recommend it! ^_^
Eyecandy with brains. Great game with beautiful graphics, good action and interesting puzzles

GENERALLY
this game is the best you can lay your hands on, specially if you are into nice swords (specially the thirdone =), moderate share of action and puzzles, like to find all kind of items, upgrade, and last but not least: enjoy the Japanese historical scenery in background.
Very nice graphics, very good storyline, not too easy, not too hard, couple of different characters which game switches for you in couple of places.
CONTROLS
There is nothing wrong with controls at all, once you get used to them in beginning. Couple of moves and you are into it. No problem what so ever.
Besides, the game gives you opportunity to learn to use everything in beginning, without any boring teachers talk or long separate tutorials.
SOUND
Good sound that works nicely togehter with this game.
The only thing I do not like is that you CAN'T
choose JAPANESE SPEACH on it.
I believe I speak for quite few people out there when I say that it would be cool to have original talk/sound on games, specially when it is specifically into certain culture; when games are restricted to region; and when chipping is hard to do, impossible or illegal.
There should be at least this option to choose in every game: original language with and without subtitles!!
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend this game to everybody as best game TO OWN, and definitely continue with it.
Have fun!! :)
Amazing graphics, amazing soundtrack, and some okay gameplay

Granted, we all thought this game lacked because it was only about 5 hours long. But, when you set down the controller after beating the final boss, you'd have thought you went through at least 10(most likely because you'll be playing it on and off). There's just so much story packed into those 5 hours.
Another great quality is the graphics. Most of the time, you'll see a pre-rendered backdrop behind your character, something not too unusual if you've played alot of PC games in the 90's. It also leads you to pressing X to go up ladders, stairs, or opening anything interactive-fading to black, then reappearing with the object affected appropriately. Aside from that, later on in the game, backgrounds begin to move in a strangely beautiful animation, such as in the Dark Realm or out on a lake at night with a moon reflecting in the water. But what makes it beautiful is that it actually seems to be moving dynamically, rahter than some obvious loop. So it's not as painful as you think it is to not have the background move with the character. In most games, alot of developers screw that part up anyway.
One final note on the graphics is that with Playstation 2's new engine, the character model looks almost exactly as detailed as a model in an FMV. And indeed, the game doesn't seem to find much use for an FMV transition, as the models look realistic anyhow.
So, now that I've sold you on the graphics, let's talk gameplay. I felt that this was the only obvious feature that I had trouble with. Basically, you don't even need a Dual-Shock controller to play this game. It's all done with arrows, buttons, and the L R buttons for blocking and such. Well, that's not too bad. Except that left and right turns you left and right, while forward and backward makes you go, well, forward and backward. So, it's something to get used to, especially in battle. After playing the game for a few minutes, you get the feel for things.
And finally, difficulty. This game can be one sick little monkey as you get farther in the game. The whole game runs off of the Resident Evil engine, which makes health and ammo hard to recover. You'll have to stick it out by using alot of your blocking and dodging skills, not to mention making the right attack at the right time. So, I guess it's good in that there is some skill required to beat it. But some bosses, and even just getting from place to place can be difficult without getting sliced or shot with arrows.
I give this game 4 out 5 because it's everything I wanted in a good, involving story(as well as some side plots by reading pieces of a journal that you have to collect as you play), a steady theme, an excellent soundtrack, and a perfect legacy for the other sequels. It's not my favorite game, so it doesn't get a 5, but it's definitely something to look back on.

The game is very difficult and fun. The only problem is that it is too short! It takes only 2 hours to beat, and believe it or not, that is one of the objectives: to beat it in less than 2 hours! This game was NOT worth 50 dollars back then, and isn't worth 20 dollars now. I would definitely reccommend a rental.
A great game to RENT from Blockbuster

This game is a one of the best for PS2. It has non-stop action, upgradable weapons, and the controls come with time. You'll beat it in less than 8 hours, so rent this one.

This game is amazing and brings you back to the roots of Onimusha. More challenging than the sequal (which is also incredible) it adds a rich story to a fun and engrossing adventure. the CG clips are also awe inspiring and beautiful, this game looks great and plays great...it's totally addictive and a definate must have.

This game is one of the best games I ever playd.
It rivals Zelda, so it must be good, and it got a best ps2 game award. This game is sooo fun. U get epic weapons and element attacks. The graphicsn in the movie sequences are the best graphics I've ever seen. They are the BEST! The controls are like resident evel, but it's ok. This game is a must buy 4 action adventure lovers. 4 sure. ((-:
