Let me begin by saying this is one of the most enjoyable games that I've played in a while. The graphics are tight and there's nothing like swinging in between the buildings in the street and climbing up and down walls. The only problem I find is the fighting is very repetitive. Fighting 5 to 10 guys at a time becomes boring after a while. The combos are kinda cool, but being that you have do them all the time the "coolness" runs out. In closing, this is a must have. You may not be playing for hours and hours but you will get back to it with no hesitation.
Dis game ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the words of Comic Book Guy (The Simpsons, for all you non-fans): "Best video game ever!!!"...love at first sight is possible. But make sure you set the controls to Classic mode, or else the moves are way too difficult. The gameplay graphics, for once are just as good, if not better than the storymode graphics. At first you can't distinguish it from the movie (which was truly AWESOME!). Also, I find the movement easier when set to D-pad controls. This ham...sorry, game swipes the board with Spiderman 1 + 2. No comparision...
just like the movie (EXACTLY)

man this game is so identical to the movie, which i would expect. i had this game for the xbox, but i like it better on the PS2, i know, why would i re-purchase the game, well the PS2 speaks for it self. i must say that the most impressive thing about spidey is that despite the fact that it was a movie, it make a heck of a game.
the xbox version's controls weren't the best, but it was okay, i loved the movie and i love the game. my biggest piece of advice is don't buy the xbox version, unless you have no other option.

Spider man for the Playstation 2 is a game that walks a very fine line between being fun, and being frustrating. As you probably know, this game is based on the first spider man movie. You step into the role of Peter Parker as he swings through Manhattan in his quest to avenge the death of one of his loved ones. Oh yea, and he also has to contend with the lunatic Green Goblin who wants to kill him.
At it's heart, Spider man is founded almost exactly like it's PS1 cousin (that was a great game). You swing through the city of New York using the R2 button, attack foes with your fists and feet, spin webs and fight crime. But unlike the PS1 games, the PS2 spider man is graphically amazing. The skyscrapers of New York really come to life like never before, looking entirely realistic. Planes fly through the air, cars go through the streets far below. New York has never looked so good before. Likewise for the charachters, who all look great. Peter Parker in the game looks exactly like the Peter Parker in the movie. Overall, the graphics here are amazing. People talk about how poor the graphics are on PS2 compared to X-Box, but I have yet to see any proof of this.
Unfortunitly, the gameplay of Spider man is at best, mediocre. And at its worst, it's hair tearinginly frustrating. When I started playing the first level, I was a bit stunned at how bad the camera is. Of course this is to be expected, being that this is a spider man game, but this has got to be the worst Spider-Man camera yet. It drifts as if it was on a swivel, and it takes a long time to get used to it. The Camera lock feature is a nice touch though.
The fighting of Spider man is very frustrating. Any spider man fan knows that Spidey can lift a semi truck over his head easily. If that's true, then how come Spider man is such a wimp when it comes to taking out certain bad guys. Here's a helpful hint when playing the game. If you see a thug with a gun, RUN!!! The thugs with guns are withought a doubt the most frustrating enemies in the game. They fire guns very fast at you, and they can block your attacks simply by putting thier arms up. And worst of all, they can take upwards of ten of your most powerful combos before they die. This is beyond frustrating. This is beyond infuriating. This is so frustrating that words cannot describe it. In the third level, after I died the sixtenth time after fighting three thugs with guns who kept saying, "Mess with the skulls, you pay da price". I wanted to shout, "OH YEAH?! YOU CAN CRAM THAT C*** UP YOUR..." Well, you can probably guess where that went. I got so mad after my thirtieth try, that I almost broke my controler by slamming it on the ground in frustration. You read that right. The game made me almost broke my controler. In ten years of playing video games, Spider Man is the first game that made me damage my controler out of frustration. That's not a good sign...
But I dont want to paint an excessivly poor picture of this game. Some of the levels are a lot of fun to play, such as "Air duel with the vulture", and "Face off at the bridge." There are also nifty cheats that allow you to play as various charachters, such as a policeman, a thug, even shocker! There's a code that lets you shrink your charachter down to about ten inches tall. There's even a alternate story line where you play as Harry Osborn in the Green Goblin outfit. And Bruce Cambells narration is hilarious! "When you hide in the shadows, the bad guys wont see you. Muhawwwwwhhaaa!" Likewise, the actors who played the Green Goblin and Peter Parker lent thier voice talents to the game, and both do a superb job at it.
In the end, Spider man is enjoyable, but it comes within a hair of being bad. I recommend renting before you buy.
A classic example of "good but not great"

Spider-Man (2002.) The video game based on the film.
In 2002, Spider-Man hit theatres, and the success of the film was astonishing. It's doubtful anyone knew just how successful the new take on the classic Marvel comic would be. Like most very popular movies, there was a ton of merchandise to go along with Spider-Man's release. Among this stuff was, not surprisingly, a video game. Spider-Man was released on consoles around the same time as the movie. Is the video game to video games what the movie was to the movie industry? Read on to find out.
I'll be honest - the only reason I bought this game is because a local video game retailer had knocked the price down considerably, and because I was a huge fan of the film. Being a big fan of the film, I was eager to try out of the game version after finding it for so low a price. And as I fast discovered, it has its share of excellent and horrible points alike. We'll start by examining what this game does right. Graphics are the best thing this game has going for it. There aren't any cut scenes directly from the movie, but I don't care - the game graphics in the cut scenes put the system's hardware to very good work. Likewise, the game's programmers put the controller to good use, creating a scheme that goes very well with the controller and allows you to pull off a ton of cool moves. Another excellent point about the game is that the storyline goes far beyond the film. In the movie, Peter Parker hunted down and killed Uncle Ben's killer almost instantaneously, but in the game, you've gotta fight your way through a whole gang of thugs before you reach him. Likewise, while the film's only villain was the Green Goblin, this game adds in a ton of other classic Spider-Man villians, like Shocker and Vulture. And Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe, who portrayer Spider-Man/Peter Parker and the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn in the films provide the voices of those characters for the game. Sadly though, other characters aren't portrayed by their film counterparts. Fortunately, the actors are all competent. And then we get into what the game does wrong. The game's biggest flaw is, by far, the camera. This has ruined many a potential good game, and in Spider-Man it's not different. Your control over the camera is minimal at best, and you'll find yourself getting killed more often due to the crappy camera than due to your lack of experience playing the game. Another huge flaw is that, despite all the powers and abilities you have, the game is REPETITIVE. REALLY repetitive. Basically you just go around beating up thugs, collecting items, and fighting boss characters. It gets old really fast. The voice acting is also redundant, with thugs constantly saying the same lines over and over again. You'll want to mute the TV aftet you hear the same lines this constantly. In the end, what you're left with is an average game. The great points cancel out the horrible ones, making the game painfully average.
This game remains fairly readily available in stores, and it has recently been marked down greatly in price. This makes it all the more accessible if you own the game system in question. If you're a Spider-Man fan, it's worth shelling out the low price stores now ask for the game.
So, what's my final verdict? If you want a game that will provide you some thrills and not put too big a dent in your wallet, Spider-Man will strike your fancy. Just don't expect it to hold your attention forever. Price is the best thing I have to say about the game. The sequel is a considerably better game, so you may want to consider going directly to it instead.

I had high hopes for this game on the PS2, but they were diminished after spening some time playing it. Sure, it looks really good, and the action is fluid and showcases the power of the PS2. But good looks don't make a good game. After playing for about 20 minutes I was bored with it. Plus the camera can't keep up with Spiderman's moves, and that creates a headache.
Also, Activision, who wrote the script for that obnoxious training mode? The narrator deserves to get tossed from the highest building in the game.
Better than the first

Ok, i'm not knocking the spider man game for the ps1 but come on.
Better graphics, sound, stronger enemies the works. So your worried the bosses will be too hard not to worry they're formidable opponents. Think of it this way when you thash them you can be them, the goblin, shocker all of them. Pretty cool huh. Not enough, well their are cheats to unlock just about everything. All in all this is a solid game. For all you true believers out there buy this game!

Well this would have been 5 stars but it had a few little things that I was hoping wouldn't be there. First of all, the web still connects to open sky. In the movie, we see him shoot his web onto the side of the building and swing around using the buildings. But in the game your web just connects to clouds. That is an odd site. Second, I beat the game in just a few hours. I was hoping for something a little harder. And I also wanted more city levels. The most fun I had in this game was slinging in the cities, but that only happens a few times...And the last thing is I couldn't get onto the street. What is that about? It just wouldn't let me onto the ground, it would automatically shoot out web before I could land...I really did enjoy this game, I did nothing but play it since I got it... It is REALLY worth buying...
A must own...

Just picked this up yesterday, and it has become a full blown addiction. I was a huge fan of the original 2 games for the PSOne, and seeing as the same folks that made those two were back to update (and upgrade) for the PS2 made this a must-own. What I didn't know is that they would make the game ride so close on the tail of the movie. Most movie franchise games come out months after the original,...see: The Mummy Returns). Here, the makers at Activision really believed in the movie (a good sign for the flick), and the story it was telling. As in the movie, Tobey Maguire does the voice of Spidey, and he is looking to be the pinnacle of what I thought he would be as the character...playful, strong, kind of geeky, and unsure of his abilities (he actually says "Wow" at one point, upon discovering what he can do), but more importantly, he has great vocal presence here in the game. Graphics are tightly focused, a major upgrade from the originals, which set the first person tone we get a good feel of what it's like to be a webslinger, from his meager beginnings in jeans and a ski mask, to the red and blue homo-arachnid we've come to know and love. Bruce Campbell (Ash from the Evil Dead flicks...a nod to Sam Raimi's direction of the Spider-Man flick, Campbell also has a small part in the movie) provides hilarious, smart-assed narration (replacing Stan Lee, as this is more about the Movie Universe, versus the Marvel comic book universe), reminding us of the things we should know about in order to make Spidey move, fight (or not fight, in favor of stealth), spin, and fly. Did I say fly? YES. The amazing way that Spidey swings in this game is a huge step up from the previous offerings, and you may find yourself just swinging between skyscrapers just for the coolness factor, forgetting about the other tasks at hand. Do so. The visuals practically beg for it. The villains (even the basic thugs) are much tougher than in the first game, and you will struggle, but that's a good thing. The challenge quotient should be stepped up. It's a new system! You may be Spider-Man, but like Peter Parker just starting out, you learn your moves as you progress through the game, finding Golden Spiders throughout the game that will give you better combos as you go along, so it really feels like you're becoming Spider-Man along with Peter Parker, as he makes a full transformation from geeky student to full-fledged hero. There will not be a better superhero game this year, until that widely hinted at X-Men third person game hits stores (probably in time for the next sequel...due next year). In the meantime, buy this one. You won't regret it.
