This was the first game I bought for PS2. I read all the reviews on this site to make my choice, and it was well worth the effort, because this game has everything. It's almost like you really become Spidey while playing the game. The combat is fun, the bosses diverse and entertaining, and web-swinging makes me want to climb up on my roof and take a leap. All the reviews complain about the camera, but that one small (granted, annoying) thing is not worth dismissing the game, or even docking it a star. A decent player can learn to work around it. If not: (to quote the funny narrator) "I can't help you. Unplug the machine, and walk away." If for no other reason, buy this game just to experience being Spider-man. The thrill of that really adds to the replay value, too. I've done my favorite level dozens of times, because there are so many moves you can perform, it's different every time.
By the way, the reviewers who say you're better off just punching and kicking instead of using combo moves...I don't know what game they're playing, but it can't be Spider-man. Learn the good moves, forget the bad ones. Because when you have a whole group of thugs coming at you, it's nice to know how to do an elbow slam. Camera-lock mode is very useful for combo moves because Spidey does the aiming for you. But stick with hand to hand: the web attacks (with the possible exception of the web dome) are, sadly, rather ineffective (not to mention a tragic waste of "web fluid", which you need for other things like uh...moving, for example?). The only thing I want is a bigger city to explore and the ability to swing down to the streets. But then, I'd also like a million dollars, so why carp?
For the wise people who actually buy the game and don't just spend their empty, pitiful lives reading reviews, I do have a few more tips I wish I'd known going in. If you don't like tips, I'm sorry. Really I am...(cough). When going after Uncle Ben's Killer (yes, it does...kind of follow the movie) get inside the big room with him because the hallway outside is a deathtrap. It took me a number of times to figure that out, and he's at the very end of the level. Also, turn on camera-lock mode to better follow flying enemies; the compass and height meter just don't cut it. I lost Vulture many times. (There are, incidentally, other enemies than the Green Goblin). And when a group of low to middle echelon minions is on top of you, use combo moves that hit everyone (such as the tackle and cannonball). However, these moves usually deliver only one or two hits (your average goon requires four), so when fighting a single enemy, use more powerful moves (such as the elbow slam and backflip kick), but never simple ones like "dual fists" or "web hit" (unless you have nothing else) because these leave you open to attack upon completion. More powerful moves separate you from the enemy.
Anyway, if you're willing to devote yourself to training and learning the good moves, this game can be one of the best you've ever played. And I'm not even a Spider-man fan.
Oh, and my only complaint...Spidey bowling: boring and stupid. But it's just a minigame you unlock.

...Overall, it is a very enjoyable game! The game idea is so different from many out there today.
Graphically, the game was well done! The levels and cities are amazing looking and the buildings look clear and realistic. However, there is a downflaw: The people. Mary Jane (the love interest) in the real movie is played by Kirsten Dunst. Well let me tell you, the game does a horrible job making an animated version. She looks ugly thoughout most of the game and has a really really fake sounding voice. That probably was the only downflaw graphically.
As for gameplay, the game is really fun, but really hard. I see no way anyone could beat this game without some sort of cheat. I myself struggled through many of the levels and couldn't beat 1/2 of them. However, the controls are easy to learn and very well thought out.
Overall, this is a great game. The sound is also good and Spiderman has a realistic voice to that of the movie. I enjoyed renting the game, however am not sure if this would be a great game to buy. You can basically get everything out of it in a good week and after that, it gets kinda boring. Plus, there is no multiplayer included...
Closest thing to BEING Spidey!

The graphics and game play are excellent! Spidey moves authentically, and the voices of Tobey Maguire and Willem Defoe add alot to the experience.
The game progresses very nicely, with the player starting out as Peter Parker in basic training to get you familiar with the controls, then you track down Uncle Ben's killer while wearing Peter's wrestling costume (the Human Spider!). I thought it was cool that you actually had to work your way up to Spiderman's movie costume. The game also has several training modes (perfectly narrated by Bruce Campbell) to let you hone your combat and web-swinging skills.
Classic Spidey villains keep you very busy before you meet the Green Goblin for several rounds of aerial and hand-to-hand combat.
The game also has 4 difficulty settings and lots of goodies to find along the way. You can even play the game as the Green Goblin if you want (ya gotta beat him first, though)!

This game was much better then Wolverine's Revenge and a bit better then the Hulk. This game is extremely fun, from the web-swinging [Which goes into the sky and beyond]to the fighting. The storyline closely follows that of the movie except when you battle added super-villians such as the Vulture or Scorpion. There are a number of combos that you can preform, and eventually unlock the Green Goblin [This time as Harry Osborn], where you get to use the glider and all of the Green Goblin's weapons. Most of the objects in the game are interactive so you can pick up cars or garbage cans and use them as weapons. Though you don't have such a wide range of weapons to collect as the Hulk, Spider-Man is a great game. You can collect Golden Spider Icons to unlock new attacks and moves, and you have Spider-Man's web powers at your disposal, such as his normal web which wraps your opponent in the web temporairly, the Web Dome, a shield made out of thick web that soon bursts open knocking back enemies, the Web Yank which pulls enemies towards you, your Impact Web which shoots a powerful ball of web fluid, or the Web Gloves which enhances your physical fist moves. Also the boss battles are extremely fun, from the battle with Spike to battles with the Shocker, to dazzling aerial combat with the Vulture to wall-crawling matches with Scorpion and ending in a terrific aerial brawl with the Green Goblin.

My son got this game, along with a PS2 Spiderman controller, for his 4th birthday. I don't know how someone else said the villians are more demonic looking. I've seen more frightening characters in my husband's ESPN NFL 2K5!!! My son LOVES spiderman and this was bought to compliment the controller. I've watched him play it and so far NOTHING seems very violent. Sure, you beat up the bad guys. However, there's no bloody graphics. and the bad guys just disappear. What did you think it would be, saying No No and giving them time-outs?!? Anyway, my son loves this game and the web slinging and swinging. I'm VERY cautious about what he watches/plays (Tekken and WWF are BIG no nos in my house) and I have no problems with him playing this. Awesome storyline flows with the movie. Spiderman retains his boyish naivete' and charm. GREAT buy!

This game has a lot of web action, you can spin your enemys up with your web and you can swing all around New York. This game has alot of bosses, but it could be a little longer. My favorite part in the game is when you go to the edge of a building and use an attack where you use the web to throw an enemy towards you causing him to fall of the edge of the building! There is also web-zip which shoots you up a wall. I got this game for the webing action, and I would recommend it!
Pretty Good, but way to short.

I rented this game. Its not a bad game. The graphics and levels are pretty good. To me, the fun factor rates pretty high on my scale. Overall, I give the game four stars; however, the game is awfully short and pretty easy too. I beat it in about 3 hours on normal mode. It was probably short because this game was of course, based on the movie. The bosses are very easy to beat. Goblin was way easier than I thought he would be as a final boss.
My words to you gamers out there is; if you're one of those hardcore gamer types or just like to play games, rent this one. If you really love spider man, buy it.

I gave this game a rent a little while ago, and was pleasantly surprised. Those of you who played the first Spider Man game for the Playstation will remember it's stengths and weaknesses well. Some levels (the outdoor ones notably) were a lot of fun, and the one-liners spidey shot at villains were great. But later on the gameplay lost a lot of its excitement and the levels got frustrating. Who wants to play through a hard section expecting to get to save, and then find that they are only half-way through a level?
Spider Man the Movie for PS2 solves the problems that plagued the original nicely, while enhancing the gameplay of the best levels of the original. The levels have nice variety, from the outdoor webslinging (it's not realistic to web the sky itself, but hey, I'm not complaining), to cool boss fights that mostly consist of simply dodging attacks and beating up the bad guy (the way it should be). And low and behold, every time you complete a hard section, you get to save (YES!!).
I actually like the game better than the movie, if you can believe that. The reason why is simple. It's more exciting, and it's more like Spider Man. Instead of character interaction you don't really care about, you get non-stop action. It feels more like the cartoon show that came out a few years back. Just when Spidey thinks he can finally breathe, there's something or someone else threatening to destroy something. Cool. And of course my biggest problem with the movie was the abscence of the trademark Spidey one-liners (I actually had a friend who was an extra in the movie, and told me about a great classic Spider Man one-liner that was cut from the movie). This game has got tons of them. And though they may repeat a bit too much, they're still great.
Lastly, I'd like to say that for better or worse, this game features voices straight from the movie. I really don't like Tobey Mcguire as Spider-Man all that much, but everyone else does a super job. And the cinematics in the game are cool, too.
At the price this game is going for right now, you might as well buy it. Funny I forgot to mention it before, this game is A LOT of fun. I loved playing it. And isn't that what matters most in the end?

Building on their success with the surprisingly good Spider-Man games on the PS1, Activision and Treyarch managed to craft a great game based on Marvel's resident web slinger. The game's storyline more or less follows the plot of the smash hit film, while incorporating extra villians from the comic like Shocker, Vulture, and Scorpion. The graphics, minus a few glitches and frame rate slowdown, are otherwise phenominal and give a great looking New York City. Spidey himself looks great and animates very smoothly. If you enjoyed playing the Spider-Man PS1 games, you'll be familiar with the control scheme right away. Film stars Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe supply the voices for Spidey and the Green Goblin respectively, with Dafoe giving a great, over the top vocal performance. The only major problems with the game are some of the levels get too repetitive and the camera angle doesn't help much in the heat of battle. The game itself is loaded with extras and secrets that will keep gamers playing, and all in all if your a Spider-Man fan this game is a more than solid deal.
