Nearly flawless gameplay, unimaginative plot

Sure, it may be little more than a hybrid of Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64, but it has extremely polished gameplay and loveable characters: Jak, the mute, spiky-haired hero, Daxter, the motormouthed furball, Samos, the old and crotchety Yoda-esque sage, and his hot and intelligent daughter Kiera. Much of the gameplay consists of "collect X number of bronze eggs/Power cells" with some hoverbike action and a few minigames in between but it's still darn fun. All the levels consist of one giant, seamless world with gameplay ranging from the ridiculously easy (Senitel Beach, Geyser Rock) to the unbelievably challenging (Spider Cave, anyone?) My favorite level is the Atlantis-esque Precursor City. It's extremely fun to play, although the game could use a few more boss fights.
The only flaw in Jak and Daxter is the completely unoriginal plot. It doesn't affect the gameplay, but it must have taken the guys at Naughty Dog about 5 minutes to come up with the story for J&D. Here it is: J&D explore a forbidden island that must have been inspired by the elephant graveyard in The Lion King, and Daxter falls into a pit of dark evil stuff and is transformed into an otter-weasel hybrid: an "ottsel" (ooh, how original!) The entire game revolves around the pair journeying north to find the only guy who can change Daxter back (who, of course, turns out to be a bad guy). Along the way, they must fight off enemies called Lurkers (again, how original!) and interact with artifacts from a lost people called the Precursors (can't we be more creative than that?)
But overall, J&D is an almost perfect platformer. Jak 2 and 3 are superior and much more complex and adult-oriented, but that just makes Jak 1 that much more one-of-a-kind.
Really good game!

For Christmas, I asked for this game, thinking it would be something just to keep me busy on boring days. When I got it, I put it aside thinking "I'll play this later.... maybe." But when I finally decided to play it, it was the best game I have ever played! I played it for 3 hours straight without getting tired of it. If you are looking for a good adventure game for PS2, I would highly recommend this game.
the best family game since crash

I completed this game in 2001 and I must admit this was the best platformer of it's time. But now, it still remains a top platformer for you travel a giant world through beaches, snowy mountains, jungles, islands and even volcanoes doing all sorts of things to help people or yourself.
Even today I would recommend it if the price is under £25.
Fun game, but you get to watch the credits for an ending?

Playing this game reminded me of playing Mario 64. Sure you get to have fun doing the double jump everywhere. But instead of finding stars you have to find power orbs. Once you have about 72 of them you can win the game, and watch the credits. You can keep playing after the credits to find all 101 orbs, but you only need 100 orbs to you guessed it watch the credits agian. Mario was harder and took longer to play than this game. Just goes to show graphic aren't everything.
The best game ever

I think Jak and Daxter is a very fun game. For me it was a little short because I played it all day. It is almost perfect, everything but the fact that they don't tell you how to get all the power cells. All in all it is a GREAT game and you should buy it.
All platform games should be this fun

I beat Jak and Daxter a couple of days ago and i must say it was a lot of fun. There are a lot of people to interact with, the puzzles are challenging, Daxter makes an excellent sidekick... But its too short! I mean they could have had more bosses and levels. Oh well. Its a great game anyway, I wish Mario was more like this, and the Sonic Adventure series has some minor problems as well... so the platform game of 2001 should be Jak and Daxter, or Maximo.
Awesomely Fun!

I rented Jak & Daxter and I was "glued to the PS2" litteraly all weekend. It is so much fun with great graphics and phisics. I started several games because I wanted to play it over and over. The only problem is it is too short and you have to fend off any siblings in the house. It has a halarious intro movie and a great story line. It is by far the best adventure game I have ever played! I can't wait until the next Jak & Daxter comes out!
Amazing
