tip: to do a boardslide or grind, jump on an edge and hold down the triangle. That kid's review was by me that said hold down square. SORRY! seriously, hold down triangle. You do not have to avoid holding down triangle when not doing a trick. Although,
still do avoid holding down square because it WILL make you fall
for no reason.

My favorite game I own. I love the music track (singing) so here I am growing older all the time looking older all the time felling younger in my mind!!!!
Here's a great Tip:
To do a boardslide or a grind, Jump on the side of a ramp or on a bar while holding down The square. But remaember when you think you are about to stop boardsliding, stop holding down the square or else you will fall. Never hold down the square without doing a trick. You will fall without hitting anything.

one slight problem with the game... you cant do manuals. So what right? well maybe, but I like them because if your running out of time in a compitition, you can do cheap manuals.

The game that spawned numerous sequels and rip offs

Extreme sports video games, up until the year 2000, were usually extremely lacking. The games often suffered from poor play control and graphics, and seemed rushed. But at long last, in the year 2000, Activision set out to correct all that had been done wrong previously with such titles. They went the extra mile to try to make the perfect skateboarding game. Did they succeed? Read on for my review of Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

PROS:
-UNLIKE A NUMBER OF EXTREME SPORTS TITLES, THIS ONE USES ACTUAL PEOPLE! As the title of the game may have implied, Tony Hawk is a playable character. In addition to Hawk, there are a number of other pro boarders selectable.
-THE GAME USES ACTUAL MUSIC BY ACTUAL BANDS! Most extreme sports titles feature lame, generic music that sounds like it would be better off elsewhere. In this game, that is NOT true. Bands like Goldfinger and Primus contributed music to this game, and their contributuions are one of the things that make this game so great. The other bands that contributed aren't as well known, but their songs are no less excellent.
-NO TWO CHARACTERS ARE EXACTLY ALIKE. Although every character plays in a similar fashion, each one has his or her own special moves. Likewise, what one character may lack in one area he may make up for in another, while with another character it may be vice versa.
-THERE ARE A NUMBER OF INTERESTING LOCATIONS. This game's settings are another great strength that it has. You'll go everywhere from an abandoned warehouse to an abandoned mall, and even a dam! There is no shortage of cool places to go in this games.

CONS:
-CONTROLS TAKE SOME GETTING USED TO. If you've never played any game by Activision that uses this same game engine, expect to take some time adjusting to the controls. Once you get the hang of them, though, you'll end up liking them.
-LATER ENTRIES IN THE SERIES WERE CONSIDERABLY BETTER. Although this was a good game, the later games were better, featuring more characters (and some even cooler secret ones), more secrets, and more music. Oh well, this game is still good.
-THE GAME GETS TOO HARD, TOO FAST. This game starts easy, but gets hard after a few short play sessions. Expect to blister your thumbs a lot, and often times accomplish nothing for it.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a very good game. Sure, it's overrated, but that's because it's a good game! If you want the best skateboarding games out there, the games in the Tony Hawk series are exactly what you're looking for.

YEAH!

Tony Hawk- legendary skateboard hero. He rocks. His games rocks. That's all there is to it. Tony Hawk+anything=awesome! In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater you can play as legendary Tony Hawk or various other awesome pro skaters. You can pull tons of tricks and spend hours trying to one-up your best trick or combo. The multiplayer is pretty fun also. There are multiple multiplayer scenarios that make multiplayer very fun. This game is the best. Like I said before Tony Hawk rocks!

This Game Rules!

This is an awesome game!! It totally rocks! This is the ORIGINAL Tony Hawk game! People say that the rest are better because the graphics are better, but the gameplay is what counts most! It doesn't have as many tricks as the other ones, but, who gives a care?!!!!!! This ones SKATING is better than some newer ones because it is harder to bail. And also, the Career mode is better than some of them because there aren't as many goals, the goals aren't too hard, or too easy (except for the first level which is SUPER easy, cleared it in two two minute runs). If you are looking for a good skating game, a fun sports game, or just an awesome game, buy the Tony Hawk games!!!!

Skateboarding is not a crime - but trying to top Tony Hawks Pro Skater in the Fun Factor rating will be. This fast paced thrill-a-minute skateboarding game will be the standard on the PlayStation for a while. It's one of the best games this year, and it's full slate of tricks, bails, and twists that will keep you satisfied for a while. Don't think that just because it's a skater game that you have to be a skater to play it. Tony Hawk lets the novice and the skate junkie alike enjoy the action. There's no complicated story line or rendered cut scenes in-between skating - you simply grind, gleam, and glide through ten different skate areas including classics like Burnside in Portland or the streets of San Francisco. You'll tear it up in abandoned warehouses, schools, and even in a river gorge in Phoenix. Pick from one of ten skaters, all with different moves and special tricks as you try to grab high scores, find hidden video tapes, and collect other items to help you reach your objectives. The game is a slick piece of work for the PlayStation. Although you will find the occasional seam split or blank polygonal dead-end, you'll be amazed by the detail in the game, including the full-on face bashing and asphalt blood-letting that hardcore skaters are used to. But what really seals this skate's fate is the game's incredible speed, which blazes past games like Trickstyle for the Dreamcast. The compliment of special moves is also spectacular, with a level of variation that makes almost any gravity-defying trick possible. A good skater would readily admit that the music attached to skate culture is a big part of the experience. Activision never slouched by giving lame, generic studio music to Tony Hawk fans - expect the thrash stylings of the Dead Kennedys, Primus, Goldfinger, and Suicidal Tendencies to round the soundtrack out. Don't like skate music? Turn it off and skate to Frank Sinatra to see what a difference a song makes. Although the game is styled so novices can easily figure out the controls, finger pimps will rule the roost in Tony Hawk. Some of the better combinations (and the higher scores) are achieved by the most intense finger aerobics since Track and Field. Mashing won't help either - you have to know the combos to score. All in all, Tony Hawk is an impressive tour-de-force in the skating arena. Competition like MTV Sports: Snowboarding, Trickstyle, and Thrasher: Skate and Destroy already have the bar set pretty high with this game. Who will bring the Hawk down? It's going to take a fairly high-flying predator to do the job.

THPS is ok.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater is a fun game.

PROS:
1)really fun
2)levels are huge
3)2 player mode good
4)alot of tricks and specials
CONS:
1)graphics are choppy
2)characters are jaggy
3)controls get difficult in small areas
4)gameplay gets a little repedative

So if you have a playstation and are looking for a good skating game don't go for Tony Hawks Pro Skater (go for the new ones). It was good for its time but is now old and out dated.

very fun
