Pathetic ... (review from a 17-year experienced game fan)

This game is simply made for the sake of violence, and no others. Although I didn't expect much from this game, though it still disappointed me anyway after I bought it. The gameplay seems to copy Dynasty Warriors, though it is much worse in all aspects such as music, graphic, and meaning, etc. Basically, all this game is about is that you choose a brute, mad character and place him/her in the mid of the chaos then pointlessly fight, run, fight, run, and so on. Despite its meaninglessness, it's not entertaining whatsoever due to the lousy PS1 graphic and the frequent rotating camera angle that makes you dizzy, even throw up after you play it for a while. I don't understand why would somebody put a sticker saying "check I.D." on the case as if it's so violent or gory that kids should stay away from it. How deceitful! The way I see it, this kind of pure mindless game is fairly suitable for those kids who don't want to think but rather waste their time on pushing the buttons to fulfill their fantasy of being a little rebel. Usually, we tend to imagine ourselves the characters in the game and feel great about it. For instance, play Tekken and you feel like a hardcore fighter, playing PTO makes you feel like an admiral, playing Ace Combat makes you feel like an ace pilot, and so forth. ... This is the kind of game that gives PS2 a bad name.

Classic Fighting Gameplay In An Atmosphere Of Total Chaos

I'm sure most of the reviews here will be either very good or very bad. I like SOE for its many qualities and simple fighting gameplay, but I also notice some flaws that will turn off some gamers. The 'revolution' mode which has around 175 missions, many that seem pointless or just too easy, is not as fun as the story mode that makes up GRAND THEFT AUTO III. It was obvious to me early on in 'revolution' mode that this would not be the equal of the engaging and meaningful missions found in GRAND THEFT AUTO III. It's still fun since some of the missions are challenging and involve several steps, but it just wasn't what I hoped it would be. I really like the 'chaos' mode since the awesome weapons are all over the place, and it becomes addicticve trying to beat a previous score or trying to kill all the people on the screen as quickly as possible. Various formats exist in the 'chaos' mode and can be unlocked with high scores; other characters and fighting areas can also be unlocked in SOE, which adds to the replay value. As I said, I like the game a lot, and one reason is because of the classic fighting gameplay that I enjoyed so much in games like STREETS OF RAGE, FINAL FIGHT, and DOUBLE DRAGON. The fighting is basic: punch, kick, punch or kick combos, spin attack, grab-type moves, and a few others. Some may find it too simplistic, but I enjoy not having to do 6 button combinations that have become the standard in newer fighting games. Besides the fighting, the weapons which include machine guns, grenades, swords, bats, flame throwers, televisions, and many others are great. Another aspect of SOE that can't be ignored is the fact that so much is going on at once at almost all times. The game never slows down or feels clunky to me even when around 50-100 people are on the screen running in all directions at one time. It's something that makes SOE somewhat revolutionary and unique for now. The game packs a lot of sick and mindless enjoyment like GRAND THEFT AUTO III at times such as when you simply pick up a machine gun and start spraying bullets into the backs of 50 or more civilians, gang members, and officers running in all directions around a mall or throw a grenade into a huge crowd and watch it explode sending blood and body parts all over the place. If blood, gore, and endless killing are not what you want in your video games, then stay away from SOE. If you enjoy simple fighting gameplay with tons of great weapons and total chaos thrown in, then I can't see how you will not find SOE enjoyable.

Hope you weren't expecting the next GTA3!

When I first heard of this game, I thought it would be very cool. I also thought it would be like the next GTA3 (Grand Theft Auto 3). But, after about 15 minutes of gameplay it gets boring. The graphics are terrible. Everybody is ALWAYS running around and causing a huge commotion which disables you from anything to do. But, if you are convinced that you HAVE to have this game, do yourself a favor and rent it first.

Don't go near this game
