Pointless mayhem, and not the enjoyable kind

We should have all known this would happen once GTA3 made it big - that Rockstar would try to follow it up with a similar themed game, without the things that made the first one great. Enter State of Emergency, a game that allows you to kill a lot of people, occasionally for the benefit of a local thug, and that's roughly it. Gone are the engaging risky plot elements of GTA, the high speed chases, the expansive worlds, the threatening personalities. What remains is a shallow, hollow attempt at a game which never acheives the same high caliber of the GTA series. In State of Emergency, you'll throw large objects at innocent bystanders' heads, bash in skulls with garbage cans, fire away into a crowded mall, or just punch strangers without care. Sounds fun, I'll admit. But after about twenty minutes of wanton destruction, you'll wonder, what else is there to do? Sadly, the game implicitly answers: not much. Zero replay value, and only short-lived initial shock-value intrigue. Pass this one up, and wait for Vice City.

Should I? Or shouldn't I?

I'm 12 and I got this game because it was recommended to me by a friend. ITS GREAT FUN! (for about 15 minutes). I complete it almost straight away. Come on! I seriously think rockstar games should have made it alittle better. Besides, it could have been a great game, but that just wasn't to be.

Horrible!

What a terrible game. The whole point of this game is to loot stores and cause chaos without getting caught or killed. There seemed to be a lot of hype surrounding this game because of its violent nature but that died down when people realized that it was boring. There's only so many times you want to do the same thing over and over. Don't bother with this game.

I strongly think you should rent this game, but don't buy it. It literaly gets boring after a 1/2 hour. It also makes your brain hurt,... It's a fun game to play, but only for 30 minutes, at the most. DON"T BUY IT, I REPEAT DON"T BUY IT!

This game kind a reminds me of an arcade type game. The chaos mode is fun but the revolution mode can get frustrating while your trying to lead or protect the computer ran character's to there destinations, they seem to be on the ignorant side. The chaos mode is fun it's kinda like going hog wild and doing as much damage as possible for the highest scores. The revolution mode can get really old repeating the same mission over and over because of the awful computer controlled character's. Average game i can live with or with out.

Mindless repetitive missions and lackluster gameplay. Just isn't fun, even for the couple bucks I paid for it.

GTA 3's little brother tries his darndest

Honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be as intense as GTA3 by any means, but there was that little voice in the back of my head that tricked me into thinking is was going to be. Unfortunately State of Emergency falls short of the bar set by its predecessor. I don't mind the graphics at all being that they are very cartoony. The gore is still there which is nice. What really gets me I guess is that you can't go into any of the buildings. When I was reading the hype about this game they were talking about how you could loot and steal stuff. The best you can do is break building windows and your best bet for getting a TV is to steal it from somebody already carrying one. And as for the cars, don't get your hopes up, you can't drive them in this game only smash them.

...where have the good games gone?

If you're expecting something nearly as good as GTA III look somewhere else! yeah, yeah, there are folks who say you can't compare, but it's inevitable!! This game is pretty shallow. Graphics are decent. Pretty standard. Control is iffy. The game is fun for about a day or two but the gimmick wears thin very soon. If you have a choice between GTA3 and SOE just get GTA3. it does what SOE attempts but better. The whole sense of freedom is absent in SOE. No story either. GTA3 set the bar very high and it's a shame that SOE doesn't even come close. Why play SOE when you could just play GTA?

Not what I expected

Cool game but not as graphic as I would like. You cannot even go in the buildings. You're just running along trying to kill people or be keep from being killed. Needs more graphics.

Overhyped, repetitive, and simple CAVEAT EMPTOR

I think everybody and their mother was expecting something as wild and fun as GTA3, but alas this game is nowhere near. I put this game down after an hour of play and haven't spent much time with it since.

GRAPHICS: Very good. The cartoony models are well done, and the animations are excellent. The sheer number of characters running around is staggering and contributes to the feel.

SOUND: Average. Whereas GTA3 was brilliant, with character specific phrases, radio stations et al, this game isn't good or bad, just adequate.

CONTROL: Weak. This is one of the problem areas, since you are often running around blind corners and have to wait a few seconds for the camera to reset. Aiming guns is also screwy, since if there is anything at your feet, you will shoot it, even if you are trying to shoot the 10 bad guys just ahead.

GAMEPLAY: This is the fatal flaw. The game has so much promise, but ends up being repetitive. Each mission is a variation on one of three: seek and destroy, escort to safety or retrieve X. The levels are TINY and do not convey the sheer sense of size that GTA3 does. The characters are drones, devoid of any personality, and there is no freedom of exploration (ie: you can't enter the stores to loot them, you can only shoot out their windows).

BOTTOM LINE: This game is fun for a little while, but ultimately it gets repetitive and boring due to the limited freedom, simple missions and lack of personality. Even a quick round of blow 'em up is more fun in GTA3. RENT FIRST
