The defining moment for the Ps2!!!

Every system has had that one game that will forever be linked to it in video game lore. Nintendo had Super Mario Bros. 3,Sega had Sonic, N64 had its Legend of Zelda:OoT, and XBox has Halo, but when the history of the Playstation 2 is completely written, this game will be the defining moment in this system's illustrious history.

Why is this game so great you ask? Well, where do I start? You begin the game in Los Santos (Los Angeles) where you reunite with your older brother and your and other former gang members. (Think Boyz in the Hood and Menace II Society here.) The object early on is merely to regain your status as a major player in the L.A. gang wars. Simple enough, but by the time it's all said and done, you'll have visited San Fierro (San Francisco), Las Venturas (Las Vegas), and about a dozen or so other towns littered in between. The sheer size of the area to explore is magnificent in and of itself, but that only scratches the surface of what this game has to offer.

Throughout your adventure you'll find yourself lifting weights and making choices as to what food you will eat. These decisions will impact your performance. Simply stated, a slim, muscular CJ will have a much easier time outrunning cops than will a tubby, out of shape CJ. You can run and swim to increase stamina, increase your weapon skill to a point where you can wield two guns simaltaneously, ride motorcycles, fly planes and helicopters, and control other things that I will leave a secret. This game is all about freedom and you have the freedom to do most anything you wish. Did I mention midnight burglaries at random houses or gambling on the strip in Vegas?

Now a game like this would be nothing without wonderful graphics, and Rockstar delivers here as well. Seeing the sun set over the West coast, running through torrential rains and watching the lightning flash overhead, the shimmer of the light off of the ocean water, everything looks fantastic. The only complaint I have here is that sometimes objects in the distance don't always materialize as quickly as they should, but that's a very minor quibble.

This game lacks nothing in the sound department either. Gunfights are perfectly executed. The voice acting by the main characters as well as the commoners is flawlessly executed. Unlike most games it does NOT sound canned or forced. There are literally thousands of lines of dialog to be heard. Samuel L. Jackson does a particularly wonderful job voicing the crooked cop, Officer Tenpenny. As far as the radio stations go there is a pretty decent variety in genres of music to be heard. It's just missing a few more high profile songs of the day, but hey it's a pretty good soundtrack overall.

The controls are much improved from previous offerings in the series. Vehicle handling feels much more realistic. The gun targeting system is also a lot better with the ability to change targets simply by pressing L2 or R2. The only thing some people may not like is that you can no longer move your character with the control pad. It now has other features mapped to it; a necessary evil considering all of the things you can do. Still that's just another very minor issue. Overall the controls are very responsive so it'll be hard to blame the game when you get "wasted".

There's not much else I can say. You have to play it to gain a true sense of just how magnificent and breathtaking this game truly is. Mere words can't do it justice. Give it a try and see why this is the defining moment of the Playstation 2 generation!

Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll baby!!!

The wizards of mayhem at Take Two have done it again with another home run of a game in the Grand Theft Auto series with their latest smash hit GTA: San Andreas!!

Combining everything they had learned from their previous 2 games, the ante has been truly upped in the latest incarnation. Taking binary data to the thresholds of what is possible, the developers have created a world which is the biggest yet in the GTA universe and as you play this game you wonder when it will ever end. They could have slapped nearly any price on this gem and it would be money well spent, as there simply is no way possible that you will not enjoy San Andreas if you liked GTAIII and Vice City.

Set in the 1990s in an Los Angeles type gang environment, San Andreas puts you in the role of C.J. who is a gang member back from jail who immediately gets caught in the world of the the underground the moment he returns home.

I am not going to say anything more about the story behind this game because I don't want to spoil the fun.

If you like adult games and/or are a fan of GTA in general, the question isn't IF you should pick up this game, rather the question is why are you still reading this review and not PLAYING San Andreas?!?!??!

I was cautiously optimistic while awaiting the release of this newest GTA. Would Rockstar manage to innovate yet again? Had the horrendous control scheme been fixed? Would the graphics be better? Will the storyline be any good, and the missions interesting? The answers to those questions might not be a unanimous yes, but the overall package is a blast to play, and in many ways the crown jewel of the GTA series.

GRAPHICS: Average to good. The character models are so dated and jagged that they do sometimes detract from the game, but that is countered somewhat by the gorgeous scenery and landscapes. There is still noticeable pop-up and fill-in (when scenery in the background just appears after loading from memory), and this game doesn't look as sleek or polished as GTA on the PC or Xbox. That said, there is a terrific sense of realism, and the graphics never detract from the action.

CONTROL: Better, but still very flawed. It is easier to lock on to a target and switch between targets, but it is still way too jerky and hectic when fighting multiple enemies up close. Why can't they make the main character move like Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell or a running back in Madden? The jumping animation is a bit better, and you can now climb fences, but it's still far from fluid.

GAMEPLAY: A+. This is where the game shines. Beyond the phenomenal storyline (well acted and interesting, though not quite KOTOR), the game is packed to the gills with side quests, tasks and options. You can "pimp your ride", deliver pizza, fly around in a variety of planes, and so on. The world is alive, and the three cities are so big and interesting, the replay value is amazing.

SOUND: Quite good, though it could still be better. The engine sounds are realistic, the voice acting is great, and the music selection is quite good, as usual.

HOW DOES IT RANK? Here is where I place GTA: SA in the pantheon of next-gen GTA games:

1)GTAIII: still my fave because it was so original, and the city had a great feel to it that I haven't found in the later cities.

2)GTA-SA: Amazing game, it's the game we all wanted it to be (for the most part). The graphics engine and control scheme are starting to feel dated, but they keep innovating with the gameplay

3)GTA-VC: I just didn't care for Vice City as much. It was still fun, but the city just didn't hold my interest like the other games. I didn't like most of the songs on the soundtrack (seems like they were 80's rejects, not 80's hits) and the story was a bit too cliched. Still fun though.

More of an uninspired side step than a step forward for the series.

Most will disagree with me on this, but I consider San Andreas to be the worst of the Grand Theft Auto series. Its not a bad game by any means, on the contrary, I think its quite good which is why I'm giving it an 8.0, or "great" rating. It just seems like its not nearly the step forward from Vice City that I had hoped.

The graphics are pretty much exactly the same as they were in Vice City. It still has all the problems Vice City had, bad textures, shifty frame rate, bad load times, glitches galore, no fingers and bad character design. I really don't notice any visual upgrade at all.

The music is pretty good, although I don't consider it to be better than the music in Vice City or the talk shows from either Vice City or GTA III. I did however have a cool moment when I was listening to the country station: I was driving along in a taxi listening to some country signer sing on about how his ex is in Texas, not paying attention to the road at all mind you, and then bam! I flew off the top of the mountain pass over Los Angeles, probably the highest jump I've ever seen, and land right side up on top of a building, and my car survives. Just a fun moment related to the music I thought I'd share.

The game play is essentially the same with some nice tweaks. For example, you can swim now, a very welcome change. There's a new girlfriend feature, but its pretty boring and very unneeded, plus the hot coffee feature just feeds people like Jack Thompson. The only person I can picture truly enjoying that are horny little kids or pathetic super nerds. Seriously guys, grow up. The territory focused gang wars could've been a nice feature, but in the end it was just a waste of time that had pretty much no impact on anything at all. The thing that really annoyed me about it is that you'd go and capture some territory and then all of the sudden another area you control is under attack, its just irritating and wastes time. The car customization was pretty cool, but it didn't really matter since you'd customize it, then drive it around the corner and it'd explode. The whole thing about you character changing depending on how you play was cool, but it felt more like a slapped on novelty than a true addition to the game play formula. There's more guns now, along with a cool parachute and jet pack. There's also bicycles now. Another thing that ticks me off is the idiotic story. It starts off well enough, but ti gets really stupid really fast.

Overall it just seems like a cash in, but its still fun to play thanks to the winning GTA formula. It really feels like they catered purely to a very immature and gangster/rap obsessed audience, most of which are too young to play this game, but their parents buy ti for them anyway. Then when the kid acts out they'll blame the video games rather than their bad parenting and demand more control and restrictions over the industry.

Ok, I'm 30 years old and wasted a good part of my life playing the last two Grand Theft Auto games and loved them. This one I've been playing for three days and am ready to pack it in already. Why? The game doesn't seem any different than Vice City so there's nothing really cool and new. The main problem I have is the character, you're this gangster punk who wears his pants down by his underwear and cusses every 20 seconds. I felt like shooting myself after seeing this loser. I know it's weird but it's nice to relate to the character, this one is worthless.

GTA: San Andreas did not live up to its expectations. Even though it is not a bad game I had expected more from it.

PROBLEMS:
1. Even though the map is HUGE it is way to hard to find your way around. In GTA 3 i could find every thing really easy but in this game you get lost all the time.

2. They tried to make this game like the sims almost. You have to eat, drink, workout, build skills (driving, biking, flying ect.), buying clothes, building your sex appeal. All that kind of stuff. At the begining its fun to do all that junk but after a while it gets really anoying. You spend all this time building your muscle and then you dont eat and your muscle starts to drop.

3. The scenery is all the same. The cities are different but when your driving in the middle of nowhere (which is about 75% of the map) every thing looks the same so it starts to get boring.

GOOD STUFF

1. The freedom is great. You can drive planes, 4 wheelers, and just about anything you can thing of. You can even go to the top of a mountain, get a parachute, ride a dirt bike of a jump, and parachute down the side of the mountain.

2. YOU CAN GO TO CASINO'S AND PLAY BLACKJACK!!!

3. You can go to bars and play pool. You can also trick out cars. You can put nitro and hydrolics in them.

4. The missions are great. They made them alot more fun then in previous games. Most of the missions are fun but other ones take some time. I like how they made some of the missions challenging.

5. YOU DONT GET HURT WHEN YOU CRASH A MOTORCYCLE

Well thats it i hope this review helped you. HAVE A GREAT TIME PLAYING GTA: San Andreas!!!

i can already tell that it'll be the greatest

I'm so nuts about this game that I had 2 write another review. Once again this will probably be the greatest video game playstations ever put out. I can't believe these people are so ignorant that they're complaining about the main character being black and that you live in the ghetto. Dumbasses, you can build your own casino's, swim, and ride bikes. GET OVER IT! If you don't wanna buy it don't, but that'll only give me a better chance of buying it.

was this review helpful to you. yes or no

The best GTA yet! You know it's violent, so don't
play it, if this isn't your thing! The graphics are
great, the cities are huge, you get to shoot cops,
what more could you ask for! I don't recommend kids
under 12 play it, but it's just a game, relax! I hope
when the next GTA comes out, it's even more violent!
I'm 43, and I play this game, every chance I get!

What's kind of scary, is that most of these reviews are written by little children who shouldn't be playing this game.

I'm against any kind of censorship, but I also think that if you won't sit your 7 year old in front of TV to watch Boyz In The Hood or Menace II Society - you shouldn't let them play this game. It's mostly about the language, the sex part is not as bad as people describe it. I'm half way through the game and haven't encountered anything worse then Vice City, so far it's cleaner in that respect.

The language however... I curse heavily at times, but I know when to keep my mouth shut. Kids tend to immitate what they see. It could be very dangerous (physically) for your child to run around using the word "ni**er" in a non-chalant fashion, like characters do in the game - kids just don't understand the meaning of the word or the consequences of its usage.

Rockstar should have protected themselves better by putting extra warning on the box. There are plenty of stupid parents who bought this game for their kids without finding out what it is about or caring about its rating, only to burst into outrage later about "...what kind of 'childrens' game is this?" In this case I would only feel sorry for Rockstar and Sony.

Great game if you can handle the negativity

What would happen if you took Vice City and expanded it about 20 times? You'd probably get this game. I've barely even tapped into the vastness of this game and already impressed with the different options you have. Do you still have missions to do? Of course. But this time you can choose your lifestyle. You can be the game junkie, pump up your body to look like arnold, get mad skills in all different things... wait, you can also be a pimp master if you want! The vehical choices are pretty decent from what i've seen so far (its amazing what skills you get riding a bmx bike). yeah this game does hold a lot, though it does have a downside. Its not a game that i'd want a younger person even in the room with to be honest. Its amazing how many swear words they put into one game and amazing that you'll hear it almost every 10 seconds or less whenever you interact with someone on the street or one of the missions. Yes I know it has a rating on it but lets be honest, how many people actually care about a rating? If a game or even movie is hot, you want it no matter what. Besides, theres not to much to worry about the swearing, who cares about that? we all know we get the GTA games so we can grab a car, run people over, then get some weapons out and blow everyone away. I mean i think we all spent more time doing that than doing missions on vice city so might as well do it here as well. As i said, a great game to check out and buy but do watch it if you have a younger audience.
