I'll be the first one to admit, platform action hack and slash games are usually not my cup of tea. However, I heard many great things about God of War. So I tried it out, and yes, it's pretty darn good.
First off, it's really a hack and slash game, but with easy to use combos and blocking techniques, with a slight mixture of platforming. It's extremely polished and well done. The enemies are smarter than average, well animated, and overall pretty well made. The scenery and playing atmosphere is near the top of all console games ever made, with ICO and Prince of Persia barely surpassing it. The action is also good solid fun.
The backgrounds and levels vary tremendously, and they all look and feel spectacular. You have ships, Hades, deserts, Athens, and more. Since I'm not that fond of fighting games, I stuck with easy mode. With that, the fights were really easy, but that's all right with me. The puzzle, though only a few, are good too, sometimes slightly annoying, but all in all pretty fun and harmless. Usually the puzzle consists of moving a rock here or there to open a door or something like that. The platform elements are not really up to par with the rest of the game, but it doesn't detract too much.
The fighting elements are really what stand out. Mostly, it's the graphics and animations that do it. The fighting itself is pretty fun as well. Their are quite a few weapons to use and magic spells to cast, and each can be upgraded and each work well in certain situations. The action is smooth, fast paced, and at times crazy. Sometimes it's a little too crazy.
The game flows well. The cutscenes are hollywood caliber and are captivating. The constant regeneration points and save points allow the game to continue with very little repetition, meaning that the 15 hours of gameplay is a true 15 hours of gameplay. It's also pretty well balanced. The latter third of the game gets a bit tough, but not exponentially hard like other games like this.
The main problem I had was that it was just a little too repetitive. There are only so many times one can defeat the same enemy before being bored to death. If I was on a harder difficulty, I can see frustration brewing because of wave after wave coming, to only die at the last wave.
All in all, it's a great game for it's genre, and I would recommend it to all.
Pros:
Polished
Great Graphics
Great cutscenes
Action packed
Cons:
Static camera
Repetitve
Time to complete: 15 hours
Difficulty level (on easy): Easy
Frustration level (on easy): Low/Medium
Best game yet on ps2!

I traded Destroy all Humans in for this, even though it was a good game. I was not dissapointed. This game is excellent. There is a greek setting, although some of the music sounds like Egyptian music, and you play as a Spartian, which is really cool. THe graphics are great, and the gameplay is long, and not REALLY boring...just a tiny bit at times. You start off with the blades of chaos, which reak havok and kick booty. There are hundreds of cool moves you can use with only the square and triangle buttons (and occasionaly the circle button). Then you proggress to the sword of artemis, which is awesome. Throughout Krados' journey, you go through ships, athens, deserts, and a titan's back, to get Pandora's box.
There are many puzzles, but none too hard to figure out. Not to mention the cool unlockables. You have trailers, deleted missions, cutscenes, the God Mode, and two secrete messages.
PROS
+Graphics and cutscenes are great.
+Puzzles are at the right difficulty level.
+Gameplay is easy to learn.
+A lot of different beasts and monsters.
+Cool moves and weapons.
+Long gameplay.
+Lots of checkpoints and save spots.
CONS
-Camera angle sucks every now and then.
-Some of the puzzles get REALLY annoying.
-Some of the finishing moves don't always work.
-Sometimes the game is a bit dragged out.

On a journey that spans the agean seas, Athen and beyond, you must hunt down the god of war. Undead beasties, giant cyclopes and minotaurs all stand in your path, youll have fun crushing them with all the carfully designed flawless combo moves to bring down your enemies. If the mighty hydra or any other beast of ares proves daunting to you, you can bring them down with your combo moves. I f you like blody games this is the one for you. Like instead of just killing a bat like creature why not rip its head off or tear it appart with the blades of chaos. there over-flowing ammount of blood of each little bat like creature. God of war really makes you feal strong when you are a little wimp. With the ability to upgrade your weapons with little red orbs to make you even stronger than you already are is reallly fricking cool. God of war is filled with little puzzles and secrets to unslove. Playing it over and over is always a blast. I give 5 stars. And is runner-up for game of the year, behing half-life 2.
The Best game of its kind

After having completed this game only one word can be used to describe it... EPIC!!!
A game which achives perfection and immortality in the sense that it can be played again and again and again something most action/adventure games lack. I normally sell games i finish but not this one this will remain with me forever!!!
I believe evrything in the game deserves 10/10 music, storyline, graphics, voiceovers, COMBAT,
I hate to do it but there is only one (and ONLY ONE) thing that could have been done to make this game flawless and that is to add more bosses. This game even though the enemies are strong has only 3 porper bosses. The Hydra, The Minatour and Ares. More bosses would have been awesome!!!
But only one thing can be done to this game to make it a god in the videogame world itself.
This game HAS to be made into a movie. But not like other video games have been in the past.
This game could be the first ever videogame to movie transition that becomes a true hit with both critics and audiences if made right. Vin Diesal could be Kratos without a doubt ( I mean the voice the build... the baldness)
But only one man can do this game justice if made into a film and that man is Peter Jackson...
I hope that very soon I see posters of God of war the film and the name above it says Peter Jackson
Getting back to the game well only one thing left to say:
BYE THIS GAME!!!
The most well-thought out games I've ever played.

Let me start by saying, this is my first review. This is because, God of War is the only game of it's genre that I felt even deserved a review.
God of War is simply put, the best game, aside from the sports genre, that I've ever played. But by now, I'm sure you've heard that quite a bit in reference to this game.
I guess the easiest way to express myself would be listing the main points, and their cons.
-------
Graphics
-------
The general gameplay graphics are incredible. All of the movements are smooth and realistic. The cut scenes literally left my mouth hanging open, and the general scenery was breathtaking.
-------
Plot/Storyline
-------
Two thumbs up. My PERSONAL preference, is a mad cool, but simple/easy to understand plot. This storyline definately meets that criteria. VERY simple and easy to understand, but at the same time, just plain awesome.
-------
Characters
-------
I don't know about you, but I've BEEN tired of these super hero, save the damsel in distress guys, running around fighting the villains and bringing justice to the world. Kratos, the main character, basically only looks out for number one, and his goal, which I feel makes for a MUCH more realistic character in this game. The characters, such as various other gods, Oracle, and general NPCs along the way are all fitting and very well-timed.
-------
General Gameplay
-------
When I said well-thought out, I MEANT it. On normal mode, the puzzle difficulty level is absolutely perfect. The puzzles are JUST challenging enough to make you think and work (at least for ME they are), but not so hard that your working on the same one for weeks, pulling your hair out, and losing sleep. Once you get the hang of the controls, and are comfortable with your moves, etc., etc. I found the enemies to be fairly easy, but still a TON of fun.
Now for the bad points... Oh wait, there aren't any!

I bought God of War hoping that it wasnt a hard game to play. I am a 30 year old guy from Guatemala, Central America, that has very little time to play once in a while, let me tell you that this game really hooks you up. After playing it for a while, you just want to get more and more, and most important, it is NOT that hard to play. Its got action, puzzles, good story line, etc. But if you dont like blood, cutting heads off, riping arms, etc. then think again. Overall excelent game.
The best game ever

Yes, this is just one of the greatest games i've ever played, it's amazing..... but a bit on the short side... but if you play enought you will want to play it again and again.... I my self wanted to play it at least ten times, but i only played it twice, one in easy mode and one in god mode. If you are looking at this game, and you have the money i say buy it!!
In its genre, this is the best game ever. Period.

Though I'm a very peaceful, calm person in real life, for some obscure reason I just LOVE computer game violence. The more I see blood, and the more I hear screams of pain and agony of my enemies, the more enjoyable the gaming experience is for me. A great way to release tension.
God of War II promises to be even better.
