unreliable greatness

This game deserves 5 stars, I'd give it more if it were possible... that is, it deserves 5 stars when working properly. I thought this game was great when I was playing with 4 people on XBOX, but playing with 16 online? Now thats a different story. Best multiplayer game I've ever played. However, a week after I bought it, whenever I tried to join an online game, my whole computer restarts, and a friend with the game also has the same problem. I have 2.4Ghz P4, 512MB ram, and a Radeon 8500.

A good loking shooter...with a few problems

First off, the game looks great. The setting is a smaller version of Larry Niven's "Ringworld" and it rendered in a grand fasion. I was taken back by the view of one of Halo's giant lakes from one of the alien buildings, truly stunning graphics. However, Halo is not perfect. There are problems with the 3D sound on my computer, sometimes the dialog fades in and out.

I was tempted to give this game 3 stars, until I got to the part where I could drive the tank. Now that is fun! Finally, in a game where you have a few weapon choices and those few carry a paltry amount of ammo (The human assault rifle is the worst, it holds about 30 seconds worth of ammo, the alien "needler" takes about an entire clip to kill one enemy), I got to use something that had some real teeth. I was laughing out loud when I fired off that cannon into a group of baddies on a bridge and they literally flew into the air screaming, now that's firepower.

Also, the frag grenades are great, especially indoors they pack a decent punch. Another star can be added due to the game's vehicles. The tank is the best but I also enjoyed driving the ATV and the alien flyers. The sniper rifle is always fun to use and is the most effective hand-held weapon in the game.

Alot of people complain about the lack of the cooperative multiplayer option in this version. Since I don't do multiplayer, I did'nt miss it.

All in all, Halo is a good shooter with great graphics and a decent storyline.

Dude.... This game is awesome

I have no idea what the critics are smoking, but this is truly the best PC game i have ever played. The Graphics are intense, multiplayer mode is great, and there are new and better vehicles and multiplayer levels than the Xbox version. If I were you, i would get this game immediately, but make sure you have the correct hardware to run this game.

I Love this Game *Download directx 9.0b 4 better framrate!!

If you want to play Halo, go buy an Xbox. Trust me, it's worth every penny, and you get money back when Halo 2 ships.

After getting this game I was very dissapointed in it's performance. The game runs better on my Xbox than my higher-end PC. I don't have the latest and greatest, but with a 2.0GHz P4, 1024MB RAM, GeForce FX 5600 128MB VRAM I have trouble running at 640x480 and all effects turned off. At the "suggested" settings my average framerate is 15fps, pitiful!

I contacted Microsoft for support and after finding somebody I could actually understand, and spending an hour on the phone with him, I got nowhere. The guy just didn't get it, or didn't have a clue what was wrong. I'm planning on calling again, but I doubt it will help.

The new features added to Halo PC really are not worth the hassle. Sure, a banshee in multiplayer is pretty cool, but the controls for both it and the warthog are a little odd. The best addition to the game is the fuel rod gun... hope they keep that in Halo 2.

Regarding the level design... Yes the second half of the game is pretty repetitive and there isn't any real excuse for this other than this: Bungie was under extreme pressure from Microsoft to release the game as soon as possible, and because of this they ran out of time to design levels. The fact that the game was as good as it was is a real tribute to Bungie. Microsoft is making it up to them and the gaming world by allowing Bungie to take as much time as they need to finish Halo 2, which will kick serious ass. Just wait.

After all these years, still one of the best games EVER

Once you play Halo, then try MP, you will get hooked into the Halo universe.

It is pure fun.

The original Halo for PC still attracts hundreds of players at any given time online, night or day.

Highly recommended.

As an avid FPS fan, I found this game to be quite enjoyable. Inclusion of Coop Mode would have added to this game immensely. Multiplayer gaming is about what you would come to expect from any of the current FPS Multiplayer games available. I do like the added customization for multiplayer and the added vehicles and weapons are wonderful.

I found the Multiplayer aspect lent itself better to LAN gaming that Internet. But either were entertaining. If you followed the Marathon Series of Games, this is a natural progression.

This was a great game but I really got tired getting eaten by these little round guys. Glad there was an easy mode. Difficult at times. The timed ride at the end was hard. I did it about 10 times before I got it. Got worn out. Don't want to play Halo again.
No Cheats. Wish there were a god mode for this one.
Great Graphics and beautiful moviie parts. Congrats to the creators. WOW

The game is fun and enjoyable. The weapon and vehicle choices are good. I like the game but I get games for multiplayer value. This game has some good maps for multiplayer but... This game does not autoassign teams each game so they can be stacked and if a team wins they remain the same and can just be repetitous with one side abusing that. Also vehicles can be abused and the map design itself especially blood gulch can be just a lame game.

A team can just squat on portals and above hills and spawn kill you and portal ambush you. Players will also portal block you which will force you into one of their other ambushes. The map is also not symmetrical and gives advantage to red or top side.

You would think that before putting it on pc which what originally it was designed for they would have changed that. Glitches and bugs and flaws are still there.

It can be a fun game but online players abusing things and betraying when friendly fire is on ruins it. Free multiplayer but expect cursing and to be frustrated by abuse of game and map flaws.

Glad I own it but sometimes I just prefer a well rounded game like star wars battlefront 2 over this flawed creation.

My all time favorite game

First a review of the single player campagin. This may be my all time favorite game or at least in the top 5 along with Halo 2 and 3. I played Call of Duty 4 and I still think Halo 1 is better than that!! It has better gameplay and story than COD4. And I even like Halo's graphics better than COD4 even though they aren't as advanced!

First I played Halo 1 for the PC several times over, including 2 or 3 times on Legendary level of difficulty. Then I bought an xbox 360 just so I could play Halo 2 and 3, which I did. Then I bought a far more powerful computer recently, and I'm playing Halo 1 on it !again! in legendary mode! Also I found a hack to play it at 1680 x 1050 resolution on my widescreen LCD monitor. It's fantastic! Halo 1 NEVER gets old! I still discover something new sometimes! Halo 1 is like an action version of a chess game. People never get tired of playing chess, and I never get tired of Halo 1. It's always different each time you play it, because you can decide to use different strategies and the enemies do different things in response. So it's never exactly the same twice. It's so much fun. This is very unusual for me because I never play the same videogame more than once or watch the same movie more than once. Halo 1 is probably better than a lot of much newer games because they put so much into it and did such a great job on it. Halo 1 has definitely been a very special, life enriching experience. The story is epic and grand. It really sucks you in, like it's a real world. I think it's as good as any science fiction novel. So after I finish playing through Halo 1 again, I plan on playing Halo 2 and 3 again. I can't wait until Halo 4, which I'm sure they will make even though I haven't heard any announcements yet. They couldn't possibly end a game series that has made far more money than any other game series and has sold a lot of xbox and xbox 360 units.

Now for the multiplayer. There are still people playing this game in multiplayer mode on the internet. It is very easy to play multiplayer Halo. I found multiplayer to be a bit amusing but not extremely engaging or addicting. It is possible to play online using a 56K dial-up modem. It does work, and I killed some players with it. Just try to connect to a server with a low ping number, otherwise there will be too much lag. It'll probably be much better once I upgrade to DSL. Halo 2 and 3 I'm sure have far better multiplayer than Halo 1, but Halo 1 still has some value. Why else would people still be playing it online.
