I honestly think this is the last hurrah for Star Wars Galaxies, after changing there combat system twice in the last year it just shows that if they want to give this game a more Star Wars feel, make a new game.
I have played Galaxies for almost 2 years now, and yes it never felt like a Star Wars game, I played it more like a fantasy game set in the future, or as many called it Everquest with a Star Wars skin, I mean people were mainly battling with swords and warhammers (power hammers) and the armor they mainly used was called composite, it looked like a cross between a Cylon Centurion and Robocop.
Galaxies has never been a runaway hit, and you would think with the Star Wars name it would be, but like I stated before, it never had a Star Wars feel enough to get Star Wars fans, SOE/LA tried gimmicks like telling players how to become a Jedi, then many of the player base were grinding Jedi, but still didn't get any new customers with their "BE A JEDI" campaigns..
The tried a combat revamp several months ago and released the total expansion, which again failed to bring in many new customers, so now the starter kit and the NGE (New Game Enhancments),to make the game more "Star Warsy", the combat is a first person shooter type format ala Battlefront, and the took away almost all the old professions from over 30 to 9, based on Star Wars characters, with pics and everything.
But asided from some new quests that in the beginning to make new players feel the game is more like Star Wars, the truth is once those are done, the game is pretty much the same as it always was, just very difficult to reach higher levels, and if you don't have the trials of obi-wan expansion, very difficult, the game still has a lot of bugs, weapons are all pretty much the same now, some professions like trader and entertainer or all but useless, it feels like this new combat system was rushed out the door, just like the older one, because they need new customers to keep the game from dying.
In all honestly instead of changing the game every 6 months, and totally destroying everything many players worked for for months and even years, they should have cut their losses and tried Star Wars Galaxies 2, instead of remaking the old game, which still had many bugs and problems that needed to be fixed, and put in something new which caused even more bugs, and broke things that once was fixed.
I am only staying because of the friends I made their, hard to go once you built up such a community, but if they left I would have been already gone, I would suggest trying a free trial if you can.
Not worth your time

this game used to be great. Sony Online Entertainment(SOE) decided to take the game in a different direction because it is believed that anything which has the star wars name on it should be a blockbuster, hence the game was changed from an emersive fun to play difficult to master game into a sorry excuse for a mmorpg/fps Worlds of Warcraft clone. it was not successful and veteran players are leaving in droves. this game is not worth your time or money. if you are looking for a mmorpg there are better out there. if you are looking for a star wars themed game there are better out there, without a monthly fee.
Absolutely horrible

Bug filled and broken. Possible developed by Chimpanzees through outsourcing. This game is a pale shadow of what it used to be. Sony Entertainment and Lucas Arts routinely lies to its customer base and recently cheated through a bait and switch tactics about 2 days before this broken "new game enhancement" was announce they released "Trials of ObiWan" expansion on promises and content that was immediately rendered obsolete. Customer service is rude if when it isn't non-existant. Save your money for another MMORPG, this one is horrible, simply horrible. I will never buy another SOE or Lucas Arts computer game again.
If you're thinking about trying this game, do yourself a favor...

Take the $15 that they want for this bug filled disaster and buy an Atari 2600 at a garage sale. You'll have about the same amount of fun and you won't have to deal with all the game breaking bugs.
This game by far has the WORST customer service of any game I have ever played in my 7+ years of online gaming.
Yes, the name on this game is Star Wars. That fact alone will be enough to draw a lot of people in despite all the problems. Sony Online Entertainment knows this. This is one reason that there are still bugs in this game that are 2+ years old. Each month new updates bring even MORE bugs instead of bug fixes. The incompetance of this developer team is almost embarrassing to watch. This game is proof that they are NOT up to the task.
Even though this IS Star Wars, Do your best to resist the temptation to buy this pile of feces. You are only in for a huge let down.
A tragic end to a once mediocre game

SWG was never great but it had it's own thing going. I'd go back from time to time and play because I knew I could scrap my template and the game would be fresh again. This is no more.
SWG is now nothing more than a poorly implemented and buggy console game.
This isn't the game youre looking for .....Move along...... Move along

I started playing the game about 2 years ago. When i started there were 32 professions that you was able to play and although they were time consuming to master, They were fun and i made many friends while playing. This is no longer the case as you will see later on in the review.
SOE charge £10 a month subscription to play on the server, or to basically rent a character space.
Anyway now to my reasons that i would steer clear of the game: Sony announced a new expansion JTL. I bought a hard copy of the Jump to lightspeed expansion which was £20 and enjoyed it. In the space of a year they bought out another expansion rage of the wookies i then decided to buy a hard copy of that also (another £20). Althought i felt quite annoyed when buying the rage of the wookies expansion they were giving away Jump to lightspeed along with this on hard copy. (I prefer to buy hard copies of the game and try not to opt for the digital download) So basically i had bought JTL twice. Annoyed i still carried on playing and thought SOE wouldnt screw their player base again. So i carried on spending the £10 a month to play as well as the other monies i had spent on paying for the expansions. Then SOE announced that they would be releasing another expansion "The Trials of Obi Wan" This time it would not be released on hard copy but only available via digital download. This time i had to pay another £20 but i wasnt able to have a hard copy of the game this time i had to download it. There were loads of promises that this would be a great expansion pack and that there was going to be loads of new loot on the new mustafar planet. I was pretty excited about this as i had completed my jedi grinding and needed something new to do within the game. Then the day after recieving this expansion on the download it was revealed that there was going to be a mass overhaul of the game. It was going to be changed into a FPS sort of game with 9 professions that you get locked into. There is no more changing professions like when there were 32 starting professions and if you want to be a new profession you will have to start from scratch, hence SOE making more money of the people that play this game as grinding a profession can be done in either a few days or a few months.(Depending on if you are a powergamer or not) Jedi is now an out of the box profession that every one can start with (and after playing it on the test center i would say 90% of the players will be jedi.) All what i had worked for over the past 2 years was going as of the 15th November due to the NGE. I tried out the new version of the game on the test center servers and thought oh well maybe i can adapt to this even though at this point in time i had spent £300 playing this game. The next time that i logged into the game i was greeted with a message saying that everyone that is currently playing the game will be recieving the Jump to lightspeed expansion for free and it will be downloading to them in the back ground. This was the straw that broke the camels back.
I feel personally betrayed by SOE as does most of the player base that used to play this game. Also another point is that everytime an expansion was released so was some other part of the starwars franchise. For example when rage of the wookies was released so was Starwars Episode 3 in cinemas, When Trials of Obi Wan was released so was Starwars Episode 3 DVD. I am afraid that there is nothing to save it now. Except the people that will be playing via their xbox or PS2 as this is what the game seems to be preparing for.
Most of the player base is leaving as they feel that they have been slapped in the face by SOE. This game will eventually die a death. This game was an excellent MMORPG and i had many hours of fun playing my character. It was time consuming but i enjoyed it while i played. I would tell people now though if they are going to try this game i wouldnt bother, Unless you enjoy clicking a mouse button 300 times to win a fight against an animal or player. If button mashing is what you enjoy play this, otherwise steer clear.
Please please please spend your cash on something else

This game had its share of problems before but it was still fun. The new changes that they have made render it unplayable and dull dull dull.
The promise of being able to start off as a Jedi is meant to lure new players to the game but Jedi in the game now is so weak that any new player will feel conned that they have paid for this game and at least a months subscription.
If you really want to play this game then at least try the free ten day trial that you can download. Just bear in mind that this trial is designed to appeal to new players so ignore all of the characters from the movies in it as they hardly appear in the actual proper game at all. Just look at the game play and then go and try a game that is worth the time money and effort instead.
Not worth the time and money just to have someone destroy what you've built

I left SWG soon after the developers at Sony Online Entertainment made their FIRST sweeping change of an already-established online game. However, I heard about this "new game enhancement" concept that SOE was pushing and I became curious...especially when I heard that you can start out as a Jedi!! I always wanted to play as one in SWG!! I kept an open mind and I tried the 10-day trial to see if I should give them another chance. It's a good thing this was a FREE trial because I quickly found out that this game is a waste of money.
THIS RUSHED AND INCOMPLETE SWEEPING CHANGE (IN AN ALREADY EXISTING GAME) HAS TOO MANY BUGS:
I have a rather powerful PC and I still found it difficult to do anything due to the incredible amount of lag. They wanted this to be more like a first person shooter game, but almost every key action had about a 1-2 second delay before my toon did anything.
I'm sure SOE created this to draw a younger and more naive croud. Well, I'm willing to assume that a younger player base is more impatient than the 20-something players. These new players will quickly become impatient with this game. It is not very intuitive since actions like kneeling and laying prone to attack have to have their key actions assigned by the player. There is no default key action set when you start and new players might not realize how you can make those adjustments.
HIGH HOPES FOR LOW REWARDS:
Newcomers to the game expecting to hack enemies with lightsabers will have to wait a long while. You don't start out with one when you pick the Jedi class. And from what I heard, the Jedi is ONE OF THE WEAKEST CHARACTER CLASSES IN THE GAME!!!!! You will apparently be killed very quickly by any ranged attackers. I also heard that the strongest, most butt-kicking character class in the game is...the medic (?????)
COMMENT ON ROLE PLAYING GAMES IN GENERAL:
What people should realize is that online role playing games differ from console games and hack/slash/shoot games. The main quality of RPGs is that fact that you're investing your time and effort into creating and personalizing a character to fit your imagination.
Picture this: Star Wars Galaxies is a big, beautiful beach and the SOE developers are the lifeguards. You and others have spent hours designing and building your own really awesome sand castles. Your own castle is your pride and joy. You've sacrificed time with friends, family, and in some cases...work, just to get your sand castle to look the way you want it to look. You stand back to appreciate it and realize that you're almost completed with it...when all of a sudden...the SOE lifeguards hope into a Hummer and shout from their bull horns "WE"RE MAKING THE BEACH BETTER!!! WE'RE MAKING THE BEACH BETTER!!!". They see your sand castle and drive over it...destroying everything you've spent hours and hours and hours working on. Then they take away all of your buckets and precision sculpting tools, give you a plastic spoon and a dixie cup, and tell you to start over in building your sand castle. They try to convince you that these tools will be a lot easier to work with. Then they hop back into their hummers and destroy the next person's sand castle.
SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT AND THEIR LACK OF ETHICS:
SOE has made 2 completely new game changes WITHIN ONE YEAR'S TIME to an online monthly subscription game. They have ruined what many people have spent a great deal of time and money creating. For some people, they have done this TWICE - they had their sandcastles destroyed with the rushed push of the "Combat Upgrade", stuck around to build a new sandcastle with this new sweeping change, and then they suddenly have ANOTHER sweeping change come around and destoy their sandcastle AGAIN!!
If you buy this game as it now stands and actually like it, keep in mind that - given their track record - SOE will most likely take everything that you've created in this new rendtion of SWG and destroy it too.

haha
this one of the sillyest games ever atm...i have played this game fopr 624 days..and knew most of the high rollers and veterans on the Infinity server and even soem on The American Bria server.
After the the several socalled Upgrades..the game was dumbed down so children of the age 7-12 would not gind it as hard to play.
The game many older veteran players..but they sort of left when SOE ( sony online entertainment ) lied to ALL off their players.
We was all waiting for a Upgrade to our different professions, but suddelny out of the blue it was all changed and all the HARD professions was taken out of the game...and Jedi was made a start profession instead of a profession you would be rewarded with after time, they did this just because so many young players wanted to be a jedi after the new movies Ep. 1-3 was released !
they also made jedi rather crap, it cant even be compared to what it was.
So they said one thing but did another without telling their players...how great is that.
The NGE ( new game enhancements ) was not very enhanced at all..they made the game ready to be released to Xbox, made the combat style more crap (and easier for children ) and they lied and keep on lieing.
players bought the new expansion Rage of the wookies thinking it would be fun to play just to find that theit professions was deleted from the game AFTER they bought the expansion..hows that for custumer relations!?!?
SOE should be ashamed, they have NO ! respect for their own player base ! :(
I had a guild with 120 ppl all hardcore players, i had a town with 200 ppl and my friendslist had Soooo many people in it...before i left a few days ago..there was 5 ppl i knew online.
and when i stand around wondering what to do..i keep on getting /tells from young players asking for money ( credits ) as they dont bother to Quest for cash and when you say no..you get alot of Bad language in return.
And ofcourse the lack of content in the game is amazing...you NEED the expansions to get xp after level 30 now...:(
and when they say they added 10 level more to they game ( to level 90 ) thats just silly, cause the first 10 levels are just crap levels should be -10 to 80 instead..
i would Suggest: World Of Warcraft, Guild wars Dungeons and dragons or wait for Middle earth online !
leave this game alone !
