Star Wars Galaxies used to be a great game...There have been 2 major changes since the initital release in 2003 and this recent change made has utterly RUINED the game. This is a starter for the online version, a way to get you to buy the online product by giving you a taster of the first levels. As a game, the graphics are very buggy, and the constant clicking of the mouse will leave your hand in pain (No joke!). The game has been taken over by Lucasarts who have no history in making mmorpg's, which is what this Starter Kit is the first few levels of...Save yourself the money and do not buy this game!

I started playing SWG right when the game launched. It's hard to believe how much potential this game once had... SWG could have been the Rolls-Royce of MMORPG's, but instead, SOE/LA have turned it into a dilapidated junk car that is just begging to be torn apart for scrap metal.
It would be hard to overstate the arrogance with which SOE/LA have treated their customers over the last year... time and time again, they impose changes that the majority of the playerbase doesn't want -- and if they don't get to impose it on the first try, they will keep trying until they shove it down our throats. They did this with the "xp nerf", we rejected it the first time, they said they wouldn't do it, yet here we are again, to the point that after level 30 (maximum being level 90) it is practically impossible to advance.
Even if it *were* possible to level, there is very little of interest that can be done by a fully-leveled character, especially now that SOE/LA have destroyed most professions, including beloved ones like Creature Handler, and rendered other professions that were once a lot of fun (like entertainer and trader/crafter) nearly useless and mostly pointless.
While it was once fun to be a Jedi, the profession is arguably the weakest one now, and certainly the worst of all combat professions. Most of the unique abilities that made Jedi special before the NGE have been destroyed. No more "avoid incap", or "stasis", or "force cloak", or "regain consciousness" -- they have all been completely eliminated, along with the fun that being a Jedi once was.
Furthermore, many of the super exclusive items that once were one of the few end-game objectives (like the cool jetpacks and the very rare Mandalorian armor) are no longer realistic objectives for new players, because some of the vital components needed to make them are not dropping anymore, or drop at such tiny rates that it is virtually impossible for an average player to ever get their hands on them -- so say goodbye to any real chance of ever owning a jetpack or a suit of Mandalorian armor (no doubt a slap in the face to the bounty hunters!).
This game once was a unique experience, now it's not even the shadow of its former self... very disappointing, and not worth spending $15 on (plus the $15 monthly fee -- what a ripoff!).

This game, as it curently stands, is a very poorly designed and executed first person shooter. The controlls are clunky and non-intuitive, the interface is ridiculous, and much of the game is buggy and simply broken. Scanning the forums for this game indicate that customer service and support for the game are incredibly bad. I reported a problem I was having using the Customer Service ticket system (took quite a while to even figure out how to access this) and received an obviously cut and paste response that had very little to do with the issue I was pursuing and simply indicated that the reps were "aware of the problem".
Sadly, although I love Star Wars, and love the idea of playing a character in a Star Wars universe, this game simply isn't very fun.
Instead of this game, I would recomend Star Wars Battlefront 2 or Knights of the Old Republic 2. Both are significantly better games.

This is not star warsy at all. I have been playing for over 1.5 years and I wasted every bit of it now. The revamp of the game (NGE) has left this game dead. only people that are on this game now are 8-12 year olds. If you are into crappy customer service, Bugs, broken system, JEDI BEING THE WEAKEST profession then hey go for it.
Why do so many people HATE this game?

As you read all the negative reviews for Star Wars Galaxies, both here and across the net on every PC game site, you should ask yourself why do SO MANY people hate this game? Why do SO MANY people have such animosity towards Sony and Lucas Arts? Normally I don't care about player reviews, there have been games in the past that were universally declared terrible by the community that I thoroughly enjoyed so I usually ignore what other players say about a game. I did so again in this case and started playing Star Wars Galaxies.
My impressions of Star Wars Galaxies -
1) IT IS EMPTY
There are hardly any people playing this game. The most number of people I counted in the game's "major city" was three. THREE! DURING PRIME TIME!
2) THE CONTROLS ARE CLUNKY
The interface of the game is so basic I thought I was playing a game out of the 1980's. Combat was so boring even though they speed the enemies up so they run around comically like Benny Hill. I cannot believe they designed this interface, it's more likely they adopted it from some old game somewhere. It's certainly a step backwards for gaming.
3) THE PROFESSION CHOICES ARE STRANGE
There are nine "iconic" professions to choose from at the start of the game, but the choices are odd. I thought I'd make up an Imperial character and wear stormtrooper armor so I looked at the professions SURPRISE! only Medics can wear stormtrooper armor. It's funny because I could have sworn that stormtroopers were soldiers, not doctors. I guess that explains why they couldn't shoot straight in Star Wars. Okay well, one of the professions is Commando and the picture shows a guy wearing Clone Trooper armor so maybe I'll make up that character SURPRISE! Commandos cannot actually wear Clone Trooper armor, yep you guessed it, only Medics can. And guess who is the "iconic" Medic character from Star Wars who can wear all the cool armor? Two-One-Bee, the droid that was healing Luke in Empire. Yup, he was iconic. It's just bizarre.
4) IT IS SLOOOOWWWWW
Forget ever having swoop bike races or tearing across Endor on a speederbike. Everything is slow. Vehicles are slow, bikes are slow, running is slow. The swoop bike I had, apparently the fastest vehicle in the game, moves about as fast as riding a horse, though not at full gallop. In fact, my character sprints faster in other MMO's than he moves on a swoop or speederbike in Star Wars Galaxies. I think they may have made everything slow so travel takes longer and you feel the game is bigger than it actually is. Only combat is fast, BUT NOT fast as in exciting, fast as in a sped up Benny Hill comedy. What surprised me is apparently the game was slower until recently. SLOWER! Well I'm amazed anyone ever got anywhere because I would still say this is the slowest MMO I've played.
5)IT IS BUG CITY!!
Wow, I've never played an online game that was so buggy. Enemies spawn up in mid-air, mission objectives spawn inside walls, NPCs are named wrong, special attacks won't activate at times without explanation, missions just stop working half way through, etc, etc, etc. It's shocking how much work this game needs. It's so bad it's almost a beta test.
6) THEY HAVE NO TECH SUPPORT STAFF
I lodged five help tickets and heard nothing back from anyone after a month of playing. In the other online game I play, I get an email within 24 hours informing me what is going on and the course of action. I'll then receive another two or three emails keeping me updated and the problem will be fixed within a few days. If I'm subscribing to a service I expect that. Nothing less is acceptable.
All in all, my time with Star Wars Galaxies was slow, lonely and boring. I won't be subscribing to what is basically a solo game and not a very good one. As I said above, I don't normally listen to player reviews, but with an online game you must. An online game doesn't exist without other players. If the whole gaming community is saying "Don't play this game" then you'll end up with a very lonely experience like Star Wars Galaxies.
My advice to Sony/Lucas Arts is to stop dragging up old outdated interfaces and stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with your professions. Get your developement team to play other online games so they can see what the current standards in gaming are and what players expect. Also, you should hire tech support staff or fire the ones you have.
Lastly, and most importantly Sony, never make changes solely in anticipation of getting new players, only make changes for the betterment of players you actually have. New players, like myself, want to step into a fully formed world populated by thousands of happy players, not a deserted, empty shell like you have now, with one lone Wookie standing in Theed shouting "Death to Sony!".
The only thing that can save this game now is to close it down, get into some community consultation and rebuild it from scratch. The market is too flooded with great online games to believe you can get by on the Star Wars name alone.
Be wary of this game

Massive changes to the game over the past year have degraded it signficantly. I would be careful before buying this game. Especially now as it currently is rife with bugs and broken gameplay mechanics. Watch the official forums to see if any improvements occur before you act.
SOE and LA could have ran this for 10 plus years but...

Played this game in Beta back in early 2003 until Dec 2005. Nearly 3 years I watched this game change for the good and for the bad. I watched friends leave and made new ones. I even watched a few friends come back to play to only leave after the latest change to the game. The spin doctors at SOE coined NGE or New Game Experience for what is an entire rewrite of the game. Things they have added to the "new game"
One percent of the diversity of player character choices for professions. What used to be the most flexible and fun skill system has turned into a standard level based rigid cookie cutter template. No longer can you create your own character to what you want to be...you have to choose from 9 pre designed classes and can not change once you start unless you start completely over from the beginning. Want to be a tradesman that is handy with a pistol...no longer possible. Want to be a sexy dancer or singer that knows martial arts...you guessed it no longer possible.
Combat has become a bad clone of Diablo. You have to click on everything to attack it. This is a problem if you have friendly players or non player characters moving in front of your target. Also if you happen to have multiple targets engaged you will have a hard time keeping your shots/swings on one target.
Quest system has been improved. You now get experience points for quests in the Rage of the Wookiees expansion...sold separately...the ones you can get to finish before they become bugged/broken. To bad that they most likely they have not upgraded the rewards of these quests to fall inline with NGE.
Lack of return on your investments. If you had tons of cool stuff that you made or could be made into cool stuff...forget about it if you wait to long. They have no qualms about turning your hard earned in game goodies into useless space wasters every 6 months or so. Don't worry since most likely you will be given the chance to go and kill some impossibly strong creature (again) for a reward that is weaker than your original "reward".
Blind eyes and deaf ears to give your troubles and problems a quick review. That's right not only will you have bugs and broken game mechanics with a trouble ticket system that has not been updated in 2 years...most likely the person reviewing your ticket will ignore it since they have no clue or motivation to acknowledge it, much less fix it. Not to worry, every few months they will add more broken/bugged "content" that will render your previous concerns null and void.
Peace and quiet. No longer do you have to worry about your friends bothering you from across the galaxy. Yes that's right they will make sure you can not chat with your friends in game by breaking something as simple as the chat system. Gone are the days of being able to create your own chat channel for a group of friends to join. Good thing we can run 3rd party programs that make up for that in the background. Then again you will not have time to chat with all the clicking to kill creatures for the new carrots.
Wait long enough they will give your expansions away to people that have not paid for them. Yeah you can be the first to fly a ship or go to a new planet but you will pay for that honor to enter that bugged up region of the game. You will bravely submit ticket after ticket to clear the path for new players that will get the same "content" for under half what you paid for it and hopefully with half the bugs.
Punishment for being any race besides human. You can count on being unable to do the simplest of things as put on a necklace because you are a Wookiee. Or wear a suit of armor that does not look like you are a primitive tree dweller when in fact you are not. So be careful if you want to be able to use your "rewards" from all the quests you can do since all races are not treated equally. Which is not mentioned ANYWHERE when you create your character.
Jedi or what they call a Jedi. Yes you to can become a mystical lightsaber wielding Jedi. Well...if PeeWee Herman was Luke Skywalker and Jack Black was Darth Vader. Jedi the once most feared and revered profession is a mere shadow of itself. AND you can be one from the get go now. That's right kids, you can be hamstringed and unable to kill the same stuff that a mundane medic of half your level can kill. But hey...you are a Jedi and that makes you cool...right?
Craft super quick selling items to be turned into sub par items and have no market for them. That's right you to can spend hours trying to make a business model in game to have it collapse faster than Enron with a simple publish push. Rebuild after the fall to have yourself kick down again by the next patch. Not good enough? Lets not forget the fact you can always start over from the beginning and try another class instead of back tracking just a bit and try another crafting profession because we all know starting over from day 1 is so much fun.
Out of all the time I spent playing SWG I made close to a 100 friends...the list is down to 3 still playing the game as is. The community of my server was destroyed by the NGE causing half of the population to quit in the first month and the rest slowly trickling out like blood from a mortal wound. For what they are changing the game to and the new players coming in the community would not have been what they needed anyways. No need to have the players that supported the development of the game for the past 30+ months to hang around with our whiney comments about mistreatment. The NGE has soured me and opened my eyes to what people have been telling me about SOE from even back when I was playing Everquest, that SOE does not care about their customer base even when you are giving them the money they are living on. Everquest was NEVER this bad in the 36 months I played it, and quit that game not because of bugs or lack of content...but to move on with friends to other games that came out and commitments outside the game.
Play on a friend's account, do the trail, talk with friends that have played, or even buy the game yourself and try it out. But don't go in blind thinking you will be in the Star Wars experience or be something unique and special like it was over 2 years ago.
Buggy and incomplete,

You'll see a lot of comments here about the "NGE", recent major changes to the game. People like or dislike them for various reasons that mostly aren't relevant to someone starting the game. In my personal opinion it's a mix of good and bad, discarding a lot of depth and richness but greatly improving the game for new players.
What's relevant to everyone is that most aspects of the game don't work as advertised. Almost every single feature - combat, professions, crafting, travel, droids, interaction, the interface itself - is heavily bugged. You'll experience this early on as your opponents attack you through walls, the controls become unresponsive during combat, quest dialog repeats insensibly, and you're given a paint kit and told you can't use it.
In this game's 2.5 year history, Sony's track record has been to leave glaring bugs unfixed for months or even years. You can expect it to be frustrating and broken for the long term.
It's unfortunate, because much of the game is truly inspired. The artwork is beautiful, the environments immersive, and the space combat is very well designed. But you invest any time or money in this game at your peril. At some point a new bug will make your character unfunctional, and Sony WILL NOT fix it. That is their established policy.
Avoid like the plague

The game just went through a massive dumbing-down that has thousands of veteran players engaging hyperdrive and leaving the Galaxy(ies) .... never a very well-managed MMO, it's taken a big step back from the potential it once had, settling on being a very linear FPS, but not a very good one.
Even though its 'Star Wars', its still terrible.

Don't be fooled. The producers of this game will try to sucker you into purchasing it with the Star Wars title. Do not trust them. This game is bug ridden and clunky. The customer service is absolutely atrocious. That is how it has been for over 2 years. It is poorly designed and poorly programmed. It has been mismanaged by Sony Online Entertainment from its release, and it keeps getting worse.
In November 2005, this game underwent its second total revamp and was released with a new game design. However, the new game design ruined any redeeming qualities that it might have had. As it stands now, the game is unfit for release and should be in the beta testing phase--considering all of the bugs and playablity problems that it has. And, the game is over 2 years old! People have canceled their accounts in droves.
There are many better online games out there such as World of Warcraft, Guildwars, or City of Villains.
Don't waste your time or money on this rubbish.
