To all those people who are die hard Quake fans, this version is definitely not a dissapointment. I started playing Quake 2 and there is definitely a big difference between 2 and 3. Along with better graphics and a more sophisticated 3d engine, the talent at ID worked on making multiplay across the internet more efficient. The classic Lag has not been completely eliminated, however it has been reduced by leaps and bounds. No longer is it a must for someone to have broadband internet service to get a good internet Quake match going. Along with all that, the release of the source code by ID has allowed for many programming enthusiasts to create a wide array of "Mods" to make gameplay more interesting. There is a difference to keep in mind for anyone who has played the past versions of Quake. This version was designed specifically for multiplay so even in single player mode, you are fighting the computer in a Free For All arena environment. There is no missions to be accomplished, simply a everyone for themself "fragfest".
Great game!

Even though I didn't enjoyed single playing that much, deathmatch is the [greatest]! I love deathmatch! Full of action, gore and great map design! This is my favorite multiplayer game, and I think no game is better than this game in deathmatch play so far...

Let's go back in time. Let's go WAY back in time: Wolfenstein 3D. The first masterpiece from id Software. The computer games scene saw the first signs of a new computer game genre. id Software revolutionized the game industry with Wolfenstein 3D and it's forever living sequel, DOOM. Then came DOOM II, Quake, Quake II and now - Quake III Arena.
Unlike the other games from id Software you are not going to save the world or anything like that in Quake III Arena (Q3A). It is a pure multiplayer game for local area network (LAN) or Internet games. Gather some friends and kick their butts! If you are not connected to the Internet or a LAN, you can still enjoy the game. Q3A features a huge number of computer controlled oponents called bots (short for "robots") for you to rip apart.
If you are into pure hard core 3D first person shooter action, then get this game - NOW!

Overall
Quake III is a classic not to be messed with. The graphics engine for that time was superb. The graphics could have done better though.
The whole new scenario to the game is off the chart. It's friken sweet.
The online is great too. This is one of Quakes finest for the PC.
Go out nd' try to find this classic....
Later...
I can't get this game to run properly anymore, but it was awesome while it lasted.

Quake 3 is completely different than the first two Quake and Doom games. This game is really more Multiplayer based, although I'd rather play alone, since most people who play it online do nothing but write filthy words and insults instead of playing. But I find myself liking this game better than the new Quake 4. This one happens to contain several very fun mini games, like Capture the Flag, Team Arena (Must buy expansion from store), and Team Deathmatch, in which you're on a team of gladiators, all with the same color uniform.
The story to this game is basically just that an alien named Xaero likes to watch people kill each other so he captures all sorts of gladiators from all over the universe and puts them against each other in combat. The character you start with is Sarge, and I suspect he's the same Sarge from Doom 3. You also get to use Ranger, who was the character in Quake 1, and also the character from the original Doom, who's name is Doom. Basically the characters in this game comprise of soldiers, aliens, demons, and cyborgs, all of which come from the other Doom or Quake games, and a few I don't recognize. But I can't figure out why people keep comparing this game to Unreal Tournament. They're two totally different games and shouldn't be compared. This is a Quake game, and UT isn't. But all in all, I found this game incredibly fun. I've spent hours just playing through it multiple times.

This game is famous for it's fast engine, and great online multi-player gameplay. Also very user-friendly, very editable, and theres many great modifications that have been released by Quake players that make this game much more entertaining. Pick it up today, it's best to order it off Amazon though, it's impossible to find in stores these days since it's a little old.

I was always repulsed by these shoot'em ups...particularly the graphics. Then I built a new computer and put a really good ATI video card in it. I downloaded this as a demo and the addiction began, bought two copies of the game, joined several communities and I have almost every possible update to the game...SplatArena, ViaArena, QuadArena, you name it, I've got mods, players, weapons add-ons...You get the picture...I now run around as a naked Hunter or Aeon Flux, such a hoot!!! Hoping Q4 comes out and SOON! But I still do my Age of Empires Conquerors expansion, I hardly play Age of Mythology...and thinking about UnReal2003...Frag-on...ez
