If your ping is higher than, say, 75, you wont have fun with this game. Get DSL and you will have a great game
Single player is only for practice. And gets boring really quick.

I first heard of Quake 3: Arena about a year and a half before it came out. I tried the illegal pre-beta compatibility-testing release (sorry id, I couldn't help it) and needless to say it was boring. Then I got the beta releases, again boring. Next came the demo, finally a game that looked like something. The demo got boring pretty fast too, with only four levels and gameplay far different than Quake 2, which I had been playing for about two and a half years. Finally, the full version came out, which I beat in Hardcore in a few days. OK, I was disappointed with the single player. But as everyone should have known, this is a multiplayer game, and I almost threw up laughing at the people complaining about the fact that there is not any conventional single player element.
I for one, found Doom and Quake single player a bit exciting, but what happens when you beat a game? Does a new part of it unlock? Nope. What's left? Playing the game over on a harder skill gets boring, and so does running around with cheats enabled, punching every monster to death (my approach to making the post-Doom, pre-Quake days worth living). Then comes multiplayer, duh. Why would a game be worth buying now, when there is no multiplayer, unless it is extremely long and challenging, like NO FPSs are, period.
Quake 3 offers a bit of sanity for those of us who are easily amused with the conventional single player aspects to games. Now for Unreal Tournament. This game is OK in single player, but when it comes to multiplayer, well, you better hope you live within 10 miles of a server because the network code is horrible. I have defended id's multiplayer-only approach, but still, Q3 is not a great game. That is where the mods come in. Some are total-conversion mods (they change Q3 into a completely different game) and some just change a few things, like Rocket Arena 3. I'll be honest, if it weren't for RA3, I wouldn't play Q3 at all, but there is, and that one mod bumps this game up to 5 stars, from the 3 I would have given it just for creativity and graphics.
So, if you are stuck in the past, or have a connection less than 56k, stay with the older games, but later on, you will be sorry you were left behind.
Great multiplayer, decent single.

I would like to start off saying that I love id software's other titles. Doom and the Quake series are fantastic games, but Quake III Arena leaves a bit to be desired. My friends and I hook up and play Arena multiplayer quite a bit and have hours of exciting play knowing that it's not just a computer you're playing against. However, when you play by yourself, the lack of a mission besides kill things kinda takes the fun out of the whole experience. Quake and Quake II were marvelous. Arena, well, if you like multiplayer, it's great, but if you're looking for singleplayer fun (for those of you without a life like me), try id's earlier games or Unreal...

Quake III is Awesome.. really cool graphics, outstanding maps, clean, and not hard to use weapons, outstanding muliplater game. Single player is very limited to killing bots, which is not so fun, though.
Unreal Tornament is Awesome too. But I really don't want to say which is better than what, cause bothe games are really well made.
Don't need a TNT or GeForce

That's funny - I've got a Voodoo3 3000 and the game looks fantastic. However, it's missing something --- fun. The weapons are weak at best and the game generally feels like you're controlling a lead brick. Stay away from it - it's a proven fact that playing Quake 3 is detrimental to one's Unreal Tournament skills.
A worthy successor to Q2....

...but that is about it. First the obvious, with the right machine, Q3A is one of the best looking games currently available hands down. Be aware that it has to be a very powerful one (my new P3 500 w/ a TNT2 card goes bananas over this game, its beutiful). To get the most out of Q3A you have to have a pretty high end system. But graphics only goes so far. I think it is best put this way (as so many have said before me): if you like and want more strait deathmatch, it does not get much better than Q3A. But if your bored of plain old deathmatch, than Unreal Tournament looks to fill the gap. Team play is fantastic with CTF and Domination (<--not in Q3A), and the maps area all fantastic (true for both games). The graphics in UT are not as good as Q3A, but that doesn't mean they are no sloutch..not many games can stand up to the graphical preowes set by Q3A. As an added bonus, Q3A is the more violent of the two, when ya gib someone you KNOW it. I also prefer the weapons of UT, I find Q3A to be boring..its the same stuff from the previous 2 games. Really, you cannot go wrong with either game.
Q3 a must for Networked and non Networked Deathmatch play

The latest installment of Quake has succeeded in topping Quake II. Previous to the full release of this version a lot of the people on IRC were complaining about how the Quake III demo was horrendous. After seeing the full release of the game with the final artificial intelligence used in the computer controlled players, graphics, and pallets used in the environments, the previous commenters have done a complete 180. The online community has seen Quake III gaming servers popping up all over for internet play. ID Software again has set the standard for first person gaming.

This is a great looking, fast playing game. It runs fine on my Celeron 450/Voodoo 3 rig at 800x600 resolution. My only wish is that the levels were a little more varied. They look fantastic, but sort of the same as one another.
Great Game

Personally, I love the game. For me it is a stress releaver. sit down, play fast, and shoot stuff. The graphics are intense, the game play outstanding, and the sounds...wow. This game is not for people who dont like multiplayer, obviously. Oddly enough, it is a stratagy game. I have found so many times, that the good players are the ones that outsmart the other ones. Duh you say. But many complain of the simplicity. "oh, all you do is run around and shoot". If you do that, then you will get a rocket down your throat. It is a great, fast paced quick thinking game. In my opinion, it is much better than Unreal. I think the graphics are much better, it runs better, character design is infinatly better, and so are the levels, and weapons. Try them both. If you do, I think you will agree.

You miss, you die. This is basically the premise of Quake 3:Arena. iD software shows once again who's king in the fps deathmatch arena. There is basically no replacement, no contender for Quake 3:Arena which sets a new standard for the deathmatch experience.
