This game is great, and even the one-player is alot of fun, but the problem is gettin there. You will need a SUPPORTED 3D card (Moster 2 is not one of them, which is what I had.) and DirectX7.0. The latter is downloadable at gamespot.com, but is none the less a pain to get. You will also need this GL Subsystem thinge and i got that at gamespot.com, too. But if you are a 1st person shooter fan or an overall hardcore gamer, it will be all worth it. The gameplay is great, and the controls are well done (Although I switched zoom in to the windows key inbetween Alt. and Ctrl.). I have Quake 2 and Quake 1 Shareware and I think that this game easily is gonna outsell them all, but like I said, if ya dont have a 3D card, then dot but this game uless ya wanna spend $300 on one.

I have no idea what Santa Clause is talking about.
Q3A does use OpenGL but it works with Voodoo's (1,2,3). I know because I have run the demo on my Voodoo2. It works fine.
UT is better out of the box and if you are a newbie. Q3A is better for twitch-action.
Voodoo does support full OpenGL ICD

A reviewer mentioned that the Voodoo line of cards does not support a full OpenGL implementation. It does and it works with Quake Arena 3. There may be some confusion because of Glide a proprietary api from 3Dfx that is a subset of OpenGL. Voodoo cards support both Glide and OpenGL. 3Dfx's implementation of Glide is much faster than their full OpenGL implementation. There are many game sites with Quake Arena benchmarks for the Voodoo line of cards I suggest you shop and compare. As of right now the GeForce _is_ the best card for the game. If cost is a concern, the voodoo line gives more bang for the buck.
this game rocks

This game is sweet, It has great multiplayer interface and if you're playing by yourself you won't get bored of it for a year. The one thing about this is that if you play a multiplayer game everyone is super good at it and you'll probubly be crushed in secs. And it does get boring after a while of playing single player, but it will keep you thrilled for at least 3 months.
Quake 3: Arena by idSoftware is the best multiplayer game

HANDS DOWN.
I have played Quake 2, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Soldier of Fortune, and Duke Nukem.
As a multiplayer, online action game--everything else pales in comparison. The adrenaline that flows while playing this game is awesome. Online action players might say that I am biased because of the irony of being a "Quake lover", as most players I know either love it or think it is too much like its predecessors, Q1 and Q2.
It is important however that you have a 3D accelerator card (16 mb min)-the best you can afford, a computer with at least a 350 MHz processor and 128 mb memory (in my opinion, after playing with different computers).
When playing online--although 'playable' using a 56K modem, I would most certainly agree that at the very least (to be competative) you should have a cable, dsl, or better internet connection.
The game involves a lot of violence-you are killing other players characters, BUT the blood and other things can be removed from the configuration if desired.
WAY TOO MUCH FUN. Buy only if you have the time to play, as you will want to play often!
UT is better, enough said...

UT offers more gameplay modes, more innovative weapons, smoother graphics...
Quake 3, unfortunately, can't compare to UT.
Great game

I hadn't played any computer games for several years, and the last thing I'd played was Duke Nukem, so I can only say I was amazed at how far things had come in the interim. This is one awesome game, to used an overused phrase. The graphics are fantastic and the action is incredibly fast. I bought a new computer for the first time in 10 years last year and got a good video card, and also I got 256 megs of main memory, and with this I can play tournament matches with 10 opponents or more with no problem. I've also tried the online game version, but I would need to get a DSL line to be able to join most of the time (unless it's 2 am in the morning or something), but on the few times I was able to get in that was a lot of fun too.
I also bought a good joystick but the mouse is still the way to go with this sort of game. I found even a good joystick doesn't have the sensitivity and quick response the mouse does. I was surprised to find this out but I found I couldn't respond fast enough with this very high-end joytick I bought and I was getting killed to often because of the delays.
Anyway, this is a great game and it really is a blast. I haven't tried the team mission pack yet but I'm sure I'll get that next.
Feels more like a spinoff of Quake 2 than a true sequel

This time around, ID has taken a different approach in developing their latest installment of the Quake series. Quake 3 abandons the traditional find-the-key and navigate-the-maze format and adopts a strictly death match oriented style of play. That's right, there's no plot here...just a frantic and messy race to kill or be killed. While the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is solid for the most part, it doesn't feel like there's much strategy involved. I often found myself just scrambling around the arenas shooting everything and everyone in sight to stay alive, when I expected to be able to strategically place myself for an ambush, ect. In addition, some of the guns have unbalanced power. The gun you start with, an automatic machine gun, is extremely weak and is therefore useless against opponents in most cases. Unfortunately, Quake 3 was meant to be enjoyed online with other players, so the one player mode of the game gets stale after a while (the AI is cheap and the ending is a joke). Still, if you have a PC with a 3D card and love first person shooting games, Quake 3 is worth looking into.
Had expected a better game

The improvements of the graphics are very good, quake engines are always constructed well in sounds and graphics, being a reason of buying a new graphic card most of the time. But this time, in terms of playability, it wasn't quite a succes for Quake. I don't have any complaints about the lack of the single player mode, I play quake multiplayer most of the time. Bots are ok, if you want to play in single. The problem is quake 3 turns out to be a game that rookies have more advantage. It is easier to frag than quake and quake II, and I don't get the same quake pleasure I used to get. It is not a bad game. Even a good one for somebody new to multiplayer first person shooters, but for an experienced player, it is a disillusionment. I'll continue to play quake2 and counterstrike, but when I'm in need of some more blood, it is still a good game.
I'm speechless...
