(demo) Quake I with better graphics

I've played the Quake III Arena demo (Q3A) and the Unreal Tournament Demo (UT), and, with UT coming out first, I see no reason whatsoever to buy Q3A. The demo was extremely disappointing, with minor gameplay updates and more visually distracting textures, but essentially this game (Q3A) appears to be little more the original Quake with better graphics, but without a significant single player mode. (Single player mode is like multiplayer deathmatch mode, except you're killing AI bots intstead of other players.) The game taxes even the newest computer hardware, but without significant draw.
Unreal Tournamnet was released first, and it too features a single player mode much like Q3A, but it also has multiplayer (single player with bots) missions that are at least fun. I would encourage anyone who is considering the mistake of purchasing Q3A to go for UT instead.
John Carmack and his buddies at ID seem to have missed the reason for the intense popularity of Half-Life and it's many online modifications. (Team Fortress Classic, CounterStrike, etc.) These games have appeal because they have a goal that is not merely killing the enemy as many times as possible. Unlike Q3A, which is, in the lingo, just a frag-fest.
The bottom line is: For me, it was a great, great disappointment. I have no use for a game that merely features mindless killing, and I won't buy Q3A.

Short and Sweet, This game is awesome! The graphics are incredible, especially on a machine with a newer video card/3D/graphics accelerator. The game has an overall very solid feel to it. The new weapons are nice. The game has a lot of characters to play as that look very good. I personally like it more than Unreal Tournament. It has a lot of 3rd party mods (modifications to the game) out to play with after you get tired of deathmatching, and regular CTF (capture the flag).
Best First Shooting game ever!

This game is brilliant! The graphics are astonishing, and the deathmatch play is extremely fun! The character models are good too... Even though the weapons didn't changed since doom, the weapons are still cool :) The reason this game couldn't top UT is because it lacks some game features and unique level designs, and the bots are unbalanced...but otherwise, this game is better than UT
GO BUY QUAKE3 ARENA NOW!
I'll take Half-Life over this any day

The singleplayer is a joke and multiplayer is nothing to write home about. I'll take Half-Life over this attempt at a game any day.

Old, boring, unoriginal, uninovative, tired, rehashed, been there done that gameplay. Deathmatch is dead people!! The only thing Q3A has going for it is it's 3D engine. This is a poor excuse for a game, but a great display of engine technology.
Better than UT - Open GL works with MANY cards

I have followed the release of UT and Q3A VERY closely. Quake III has really pulled ahead of UT. The gameplay is wonderful, the bots are VERY smart, and visually it is a site to behold (this means the graphics ROCK!)
Regarding the Open GL post above - I have played Q3A with a TNT, TNT2, TNT2 M64, ATI, Voodoo2, and Voodoo3 based video card. Even with a PCI based Voodoo3. The graphics seem to be best with the TNT2, but all the cards are able to give you a wonderful gaming experience. Not just TNT based cards.
My two cents...
Not Great

Quake 3 is absolutely no comparison to Unreal Tournament, sure the graphics in Quake 3 are great and sounds good to. Overall I would say that Unreal Tournament is a much better game than Quake 3.
Disappointed

The game looks great, no denying that. Also it is extremely fast paced, but something is missing. Sounds like I should have bought Half-Life instead. It's not a bad game just not the game for me. If you're looking for something with a little more substance than just postal madness go somewhere else. But if all you want to do is FSU then this is the game for you.

I have the full game, and it kicks a## over the demo! Network connections have been fully optimized so you'll get a little better connection speeds as compared to the demo.
What else to say? Beautiful graphics, huge number of excellent maps, even the bots (which I generally dislike) are decent opponents.
Unreal Tournament is *NOT* Better.

Quake III has multi-processor support, support for the new *superior* T&L engine offered by Nvidia's GeForce 256 3d accelerator, smoother gameplay and far superior NetPlay coding than unreal tournament. Quake III is the game to buy when you consider the facts.
