I bought this second copy of a longtime favorite to be able to network with my son... great game a few years ago, still plenty of fun today (and a better bargain!)
Quake3 lacks in the gameplay area.

If you have a fast network connection, a speedy high end system, and you like all eye candy and no game play then this is the game for you.
The single player aspect of Quake 3 involves running around a small, poorly-contructed level trying to eliminate a "bot" before it eliminates you. The bot AI is pretty bad, more skillful bots just seem to put one through you with god-like accuracy every 5 seconds. As for multiplayer, unless you have a fast internet connection, you'll be lagged to hell and back, giving a someone who does ample time to put a rail through your skull..
Mostly all of the weapons in q3 are the same from the previous quake games. The level design isn't half as good as q1 or q2. And what's with these models? Did I just see Tigger hop by? or was that pikachu? Where's C3P0? Give me a break, it's like watching a Dr. Who marathon or something.
Overall, I'm disappointed in this game, I'd recommend Soldier of fortune or Unreal tournament.
Great Deathmatch.. Still, almost a disappointment

I admit that I was one of those nailbiters waiting eargerly for Q3 to be released. When I got it running, I was more than a little unhappy with the single player mode. It is completely different than what you got from Q1 and Q2. In single player mode, you fight in.. well.. simulated deathmatches with computer bots. Now, when I read this on the back I thought 'Gee.. What a great idea.' Unfortunately, most of the bots act like what they are: Computers. The scripting on these things is way too linear. Not to mention that the difficulty settings are completely out of whack. The second to hardest (hardcore) is almost impossible, even for a seasoned deathmatcher, while the nightmare setting is absolutely impossible. My final complaint is this. Why am I holding the same double barrel shotgun and rocket launcher from all the other quakes? The game offers only 2 new weapons.. which is sad.
Now, There are positive aspects of the game. The fun-factor of a 8 player human deathmatch is unbeatable. If you have the means to play in one of these with Q3 you can expect all the fun as from the previous versions.. Of course, you will need a fast internet connection or a local area network to do this.
All in all, Quake3 was.. Ok. It saddend and disappointed me that the loss of a storyline did not produce life-like and enjoyable bots in single player. However, mulitplayer is still a riot. You want a good single player first person shooter? Get Soldier of fortune.. You will not me disappointed.
I love this game and idsoftware

At first, UT seemed a better game than this one, but as the time passed, this game surely is better. The graphics are outstanding, Deathmatch play is so fun! Well, the level designs are beautiful, but not original or unique as UT, Weapons are okay, but also not original too. Anyways, I love this game, and I enjoyed every game from Id since doom...
Joystick support now in the patch

The technical side of quake 3, such as the graphics, sound, and overall feel of the gameplay are superior. However compared to Unreal Tournament, the game looks like it was rushed together to release before Xmas, it does have less maps than UT, but these levels are amazing in architecture and all of them are fun to play in. In UT you can easily get lost and disoriented, in its large overwhelmingly boring levels. However unreal offers more types of built in play modes, quake3arena offers a gigantic array of beautiful character models, the graphics for this game are far past anything that has come out yet for a 3D shooter. The bots feel more human and have unique styles of play than UT's. Quake3Arena is a more hardcore "competitive" 3d shooter while UT is a more just for a casual fun game. Q3A is like the mortal kombat of 3D shooters. However I rate them badly for a rushed product.
needs some hardware, but overall is great

This game is great, and even the one-player is alot of fun, but the problem is gettin there. You will need a SUPPORTED 3D card (Moster 2 is not one of them, which is what I had.) and DirectX7.0. The latter is downloadable at gamespot.com, but is none the less a pain to get. You will also need this GL Subsystem thinge and i got that at gamespot.com, too. But if you are a 1st person shooter fan or an overall hardcore gamer, it will be all worth it. The gameplay is great, and the controls are well done (Although I switched zoom in to the windows key inbetween Alt. and Ctrl.). I have Quake 2 and Quake 1 Shareware and I think that this game easily is gonna outsell them all, but like I said, if ya dont have a 3D card, then dot but this game uless ya wanna spend $300 on one.
Q3A works with Voodoos (3dfx)

I have no idea what Santa Clause is talking about.
Q3A does use OpenGL but it works with Voodoo's (1,2,3). I know because I have run the demo on my Voodoo2. It works fine.
UT is better out of the box and if you are a newbie. Q3A is better for twitch-action.
Voodoo does support full OpenGL ICD

A reviewer mentioned that the Voodoo line of cards does not support a full OpenGL implementation. It does and it works with Quake Arena 3. There may be some confusion because of Glide a proprietary api from 3Dfx that is a subset of OpenGL. Voodoo cards support both Glide and OpenGL. 3Dfx's implementation of Glide is much faster than their full OpenGL implementation. There are many game sites with Quake Arena benchmarks for the Voodoo line of cards I suggest you shop and compare. As of right now the GeForce _is_ the best card for the game. If cost is a concern, the voodoo line gives more bang for the buck.
this game rocks

This game is sweet, It has great multiplayer interface and if you're playing by yourself you won't get bored of it for a year. The one thing about this is that if you play a multiplayer game everyone is super good at it and you'll probubly be crushed in secs. And it does get boring after a while of playing single player, but it will keep you thrilled for at least 3 months.
