I purchased Flashpoint a long time ago now and still it comes out of it's box. It's based in the gulf war where you play as many units in the American Army. A tank commander, privet, captain, you name it, you can be it throughout the single player campaign. What first struck me about the game is that it's so realistic, it becomes second nature after a while to hit the dirt if you or anyone else in your squad see's an enermy, and to then open the small scope on the M16 and check out the horizon which i have to say has no limits other than the hills that obstruct your view.
The enermy AI is totally adapted to the style of play, with snipers and soldiers, even helicopters that if you hide under a bush will hunt for you until they get bored and leave. And you really will run, and run like hell if you see a tank and your on your own trying to get to base, i did. The sprint option allows you to run fast but you soon get out of breath and your aim becomes dire.
A fine example of the limitless and non linear style of play that will become obviouse the second you start playing is when i was playing one of the missions and we had just liberated a small town. The town was ours, but then we were attacked from the North East by Russian helicopters. All of my men were killed which wasn't - i don't think supposed to happen. I had to then make my way back to base. It was getting dark and the sky was red and no kidding in the hour an a half it took me to get to base it had long got dark and you really can navigate by the stars. The reason for the delay was the tanks patrolling the fields and the soldiers walking up and down the main roads. So i went to ground and crawled around a parimeter of their position. Fortunatly and this must have been put there in the event of being so far away from base, an abandoned beat up car was at the side of the road. Civi cars are slow on grass but fast on tarmac, and so i got in and drove as fast as possible towards base. The car was riddled with holes when i pulled up outside the barracks tent and the mission was over... COOL!
The realism is extreme it really is, and if FPS are your thing then don't expect a classis like Quake becuase it's not a FPS. Infact i don't think it has a genra apart from Simulation.
Anyway, the multiplayer game if you can get enough people and have good enough PC's is very good but time consuming.
But finally, the best part of the whole game is the Level editor. It's so good, you really can recreate any childhood toy soldier scenario you can think of. You can sporn as many enermys as you want, infact what i did was start on an aircraft carrier and then land in a boat like the D-day landing with lots of other boats and troops, with helicopters triggered to start after we landed to aid in taking out the machine guns i had placed on the beech. That was good.
So to sum up, be ready for a fresh new game becuase to be honest i have never come across one quite like this before, it's replayability isn't even needed because the single player is so long i still havn't completed it and i must have clocked up a cool 20 plus hours, and even if you do, you will then download loads of other levels and then if you like, make your own.
It is worth the buy just to own it and play it when ever you want.
Best game ever!

I don't understand those who say this is a crappy game.
I love it, and I've spent many days in front of my pc because of this.
The single player campaign is awsome, I like the ranking system.
If your good at tossing grenades, then you'll end up as a grenadier.
Flying a chopper is fun, and in multiplayer when someone needs an airstrike, I'll be more then happy to help.
They just need to tell me the coordinates and that area will be filled with craters very shortly.
If you see an AA missiles coming at you, eject!
then you'll have to continue the fighting on foot.
I remember all the sweet moments of playing, for example when I was multiplaying I saw three tanks in the valley below.
I was sitting in a bush, with a RPG launcher.
3 well placed rockets and the tanks were history.
But there is some things that ar'nt that realistic.
For example, the LAW launcher is not reloadable as it is in the game, but I guess it was made so to compensate with the RPG.
I have three final words for you; BUY THIS GAME!!!
I'm Shocked

I'm surprised to find good reviews for Operation Flashpoint. I played the demo and just from the game play this game stinked. Maybe I'm just spoiled with Half-Life's Counter Strike and SWAT 3, but the game play was very poor. Graphics weren't anything special. Kind of reminded me of Delta Force, which is a fun, but outdated first person shooter. Maybe you'll like this game. I recommend getting the demo first to test the game play. After all what good is a game if it has good graphics and bad game play? But this game in my opinion had neither. ;D
One of the best FPS's i've ever played!

This is game is amazing, you can play it over and over again without getting fed-up with it. Also, the learning curve is only about 30min to an hour (depends on how much you play Videogames) also the graphics are great. You can see your hands steer the cars, and your feet press the accelrator (does anyone use the brake in videogames?) The best of the game is the realism, remeber when (with enough shots from a pistol) you could take out a tank in a game (delta force), in this game if you don't have a rocket launcher you run like hell cause you'll be dead in a matter on seconds if you take on a tank. This is just one example of the realism in this awesome game. A MUST BUY FOR MILITARY FREAK OR FPS FAN!!!

This is the best representation of the Military. All squad movments are life like, all weapons are very realistic, and the scenery is ok, but it doesn't take away from the game at all. Unlike Delta Force 2(where it was extriemly difficult to see any thing cause the engine [had difficulty]), this game does well, towns are right on, tanks and hellicopters are playable, you can either drive them, ride in back or take the gunnery chair. MP is good, matching wits and skills against other players is fun and exciting.
The MP is the best i have seen, more stable then [other online sites], but has it's set backs from being on gamespy(an extremly buggy gamming world.
So for a FPS this game is the best and most realistic, graphics are good, not excellent, but hey, gameplay is what counts the most and Codemasters have done a splendid job.

Well, I'd say I was a little disappointed when I booted up Operation Flashpoint for the first time and saw it's weak graphics and low detail. I have a very fast system with an Nvidia TnT card and on the highest settings it doesn't look so hot. Trees, foliage are just opaque clumps when you get up close to them. You can hide in the bushes but can't see through them unless your head is sticking all the way out. My point is, for all the hype and excitement the developers should have spent much more time on the terrains, and renditions of objects, soldiers etc. The voices are very poor, sounds like a couple of high school kids worked on this. Games like Deadly Dozen, even though the gameplay is much more basic, will be much more fun for most people because of the excellent ambient sounds, amazing lighting and textures, and even the grass sways in the wind. In my opinion Operation Flashpoint could have been much more than it is. I'd say save your money for Medal Of Honor/Allied Assault, or try Deadly Dozen at half the price. Another game that surpasses Operation Flashpoint is Hidden And Dangerous, which is 2 years older, the game play and enviornments squash that of Operation Flashpoint.

I'm not much for writing negative review, but I had to put in my two cents for this one. The concept of this game is great as far as being able to interact with many of the vehicles, etc., but the product is far less than what you would expect from a first person shooter when comparing it with other titles such as Rainbow Six - Rogue Spear - No One Lives Forever (the best in my opinion). The movement in the first person perspective is choppy and the default controls are not the greatest. The ability to alter the keyboard/mouse controls is very confusing.
The graphics are not as good as what I have been used to seeing in FPS games in this day and age of realism. The verbal acting is also lacking to an extreme. If you are looking for a game to just go in and shoot-em-up, then this game is not for you. You will get killed very quickly. Very frustrating when you are trying to get rid of frustration.
If you are one who likes squad based FPS, then I would stick to games such as Rogue Spear, Rainbow Six, or even the very first Delta Force. All three of these games far excede this one in my opinion, even though they are somewhat dated by now. I pre-orded this game for its release in the U.S. thinking it was going to be great because of all the wonderful reviews it was getting from other "international" customers. I was wrong. Bottom line...Save your money and hold out for something better.

Reasons to buy this game.
1. If you like a game that is FULL of bugs, such as graphics disapearing, men walking through walls, game locking up.
Reasons not to buy this game.
1. If you like 1st persons shooters, this game is the WORST one that I have ever played.
2. The controls are HORRIBLE. The mouse moves very jerky in this game.
The reason I bought this game was because of all the good reviews I read on this site. This makes me think that the makers of the game were the ones writing the reviews. I wasted 40 dollars on this game, and I can not even play it (because it is so buggy). I have a nice system Athlon 1600, 512 MB Ram, 64 Radeon card, so I know that the problem is not my machine.
I am writing this so that I can save someone the frustration of spending good money on a worthless coaster.

If you want a simulation of what it's like to be 'there' in a battle situatiion, in a virtual world that is as real as it gets 2001, this is the one. I was waiting to be disappointed, I read all the bad reviews to get a feel for what was lacking (most were comments about online play), I was expecting a European production to be half-baked. I was quite amazed at how well this was put together. I have an AMD 500 Mhz, 128RAM, 16MB VooDoo 3DFX, and I have no problems with the play at all. Many programs blow up when you switch between the Desktop and the game, this one I switched back and forth dozens of times (to save games the cheating way) and it caused no problems in Win 98, which is just short of a Miracle. I now spend my hours of work chomping at the bit to go home to my Battle World and spend my nights dreaming of being in it. Amazing Game shows us what it can be like, and what we can expect from future attempts at this genre.
