Unparalleled Tactical Shooter

Hide in the bushes as the enemy squad approaches. Lob a grenade when they are in range, and grab your M-16 before the blast. Pick off the remaining soldiers after they hit the dirt in confusion.

The play environments are nearly endless, no more running "out of bounds"

You can commandeer vehicles, from tanks to airplanes.

Grab the LAW(rocket launcher) your squadmate was carrying when he was shot, and blow that enemy APC to kingdom come.

Be sure you give the enemy AI some credit, and keep your head down, even when you *think* theres no one out there to get you.

There are over 40 campaign missions, and @10 "instant action" missions that come with the game. Throw in the Built-In mission editor, and come up with your own. Better yet, download quality new missions that other poeple write. HUGE replay value.

And when your squadmates are all down and you are behind enemy lines...be afraid. Be Very afraid. This game will have you on the edge of your seat.

So you think crawling 200 meters will take too long? This game has built in time compresion. Kick it to 4x to get to your destination stealthily and not taking all night.

I cant stop playing this one.

My vote for GOTY, at least so far.

For serious soldiers only

[Added January 30 2002: This does NOT appear to be the latest OFP Gold edition, which also includes Codemasters' Red Hammer campaign. Amazon appears not to be selling OFP Gold, which costs just about the same but includes Red Hammer. Let the buyer beware!]

It's me - The Avon Lady!

If you seriously enjoyed playing Delta Force 1 and 2 but despised Land Warrior, this is the game you want to have.

Large terrain, realistic weapons models, playable tanks, planes, helos, trucks and jeeps, squad commanding, crackshot AI and - most important - hard work.

Many a younger teen will not enjoy this game. Patience and strategy are definitely required virtues for playing OFP. There are no boom-boom Quake or Land Warrior like guns here. Realism is one of OFP's goals, and OFP does a decent job of attempting to achieve it.

So much so that OFP's developers are already partnering with a military simulations company to develop a more advanced version for actual use by the US military and other armed forces.

Any warnings? Yes.

This game is rated for mid-teens - both in the US and Europe. While it's relatively low on gore, it has some and there's plenty of battlefield killing. Overall, there's very little foul language in the game.

Make sure you have a good system. A minimum of a PIII 600Mhz, 256MB RAM and a good, ATI, NVIDIA or KYRO based graphics card are recommended.

If you've got a PC motherboard based on the VIA chipset, be prepared for some potential technical work.

The multiplayer environment is somewhat limited. You will not see games with 30 online players. Most games have from 6 to 16 players. Still quite a lot of fun but less so for the 56K modem set.

There's a lot more I could say but I'll invite you to visit The OFP FAQ site instead. Just use your favorite search engine to look for "Avon Lady's OFP FAQ".

Dismissed!

War made great

When judging something, one must and can only compare it to what one already knows. OpFlash it the latest in a growing sub genre of realistic military shooter/stratigy games. Spec-Ops invented it and Rainbow Six made it popular. What OpFlash brings to the table is the first real game that simulates war. The small cramped corridors of R6 are gone. Replace by rolling hills and lush forests. The forests are indeed interesting, you could walk past an enemy and never know it. And the wide open spaces mean you can be killed at almost any moment. R6 made action intense with the threat of behind every door death awaits. OpFlash gives you that threat at every moment as you walk along, not knowing if that is a bush or a sniper on the hill. It makes for a much more interesting game, and removes the commando mentality. I spent half the fight just hoping the AI would kill each other off. That said, the AI lacks real tactics. While this game is full of realistic combat, realistic strategy need not apply. Forces will run head first in the open for all to see in to a position ware the enemy is well protected. While I might have a machine gunner or a medic, what is the point if he just runs in and gets killed fast? Shouldn't those types be holding back to support the others? While the AI knows how to shoot and toss grenades it doesn't know much else.
Also all the vehicles are drivable. It was a blast to fly the attack choppers. Great fun. Most of the ground vehicles are not so impressive, but hard to beat an empty Jeep when you need one. This adds a significant advantage to who ever controls even the lightest tank. As well as adds to the realism as you are dropped off, transported and picked up by vehicles. Seeing troops jog over bush to a hovering Black Hawk seems like a scene right out of a war documentary. The theme of OpFlash is interesting. It is set in 1985. This means that while automatic weapons are common, high power automatic assault rifles with IR sniper scopes and silencers are not. It is modern, but not high-tech, old but not ancient. The enemy is armed with much the same things you are, you don't have to worry about laser guided automatic grenade launchers.
That said, much of the combat is at range, when the targets you are told to attack are at 500 feet, you do kinda wish for a IR sniper scope. Sadly you must make due with what ever rifle you are given. At least you can pick up a different one from fallen friends and foes. The combat is so frantic, learn to hug the ground when rounds start popping, it can be upsetting that it is not more forgiving. If I fail I must start back ware my last save, or retry, point was. Also you are allowed only one save per mission. So if you get killed by a enemy tank four hundred feet away that you can't destroy, is that fun? No. Is it real? Yes. Times like that I wish that was wasn't as much focus on realism and more on plain fun.
Other than that, OpFlash is an enjoyable and impressive game to behold. With plenty of good ideas and options to keep the player on edge and entertained.

Pure Genius Realism

Operation Flashpoint is the most realistic game I have ever played, it's as simple as that. The gameplay launches war gaming into a whole new era in that you get the whole experience of war. Not only do you take part in very intense combat situations, but you take part in inter-battle scenarios, for example driving trucks to pick up troops, and meeting with your commanders. In fact, there are 3 or 4 missions which only involve these sorts of things, creating a whole package of realism. The ability to enter any house, climp any hill, drive any vehicle and pick up any item left behind by dead soliders all add to the great realism.

Combat:
The combat situations are extremely realistic, and are no use for any Quake fans. Usually, one shot will kill you. If you stand in an open battlefield for more than 10 seconds, you will die. If you fire your gun and dont move for more than 10 seconds, you will die. All these factors would make you seem that Operation Flashpoint is very hard indeed; this is not far from the truth, but not as far as you might think. This is because along with you are tens of other soldiers on your own side, a feature which has never really been successfull in any other game. This means that you can work with other soldiers on your side, just like in real combat situations. These soliders, like the enemy soliders, have very good AI, and spot each other very easily.

Graphics:
Fantastic. So long as you have a fairly decent video card and memory, you will be simply amazed at the graphics of such an all-inclusive game. Combat games have never been more lively than in Operation Flashpoint. Every soldier's face is different, and sounds different on the radio. The graphics in the cut scenes are incredible aswell, and are very close to real life video. This adds to the realism very nicely and really involves the player in the game.

Cons:
It would be impossible to find any game that did not have some flaw or other. After writing this statement, I realised my mistake, because Operation Flashpoint simply does not have any flaws. So long as you have a decent computer, and it does not have to be that decent because you can turn off most of the graphical features (eg. shadows, smoke clouds).

In conclusion, it is fair to say that Operation Flashpoint is the best game out of my huge war-gaming collection. It combines every aspect of war and therefore is a MUST buy for any war fan; I simply can't wait for Codemasters' sequal.

Potential Unrealized

I found this game to be something of a disappointment. For one thing, take the ýrecommendedý requirements very seriously (PIII, 128 M RAM, 3d card with 16 M). My machine exceeded the ýminimumý requirements but I experienced many problems with the graphics. It was difficult for me to resolve distant targets (which apparently could see me clearly), resulting in my death in under 1 or 2 minutes into the mission. Another irritation was that I couldn't ever sneak up on anybody because the AI fools in my squad would start shooting and yelling and throwing grenades the instant they saw an enemy (200 meters sometimes). We would then be picked off from great distances one by one, by small blips on the horizon. It reminded me of Delta Force, which I think sucks for this reason. (I tried using the menu commands to tell the squad to proceed quietly, but those options were always grayed out.) Some of the maps seemed impossibly difficult. The insertion point would be really far from the target, so I would sneak through the forest for 10 boring minutes, then peep out of the bushes at the enemy town, and pop! Game over. I know that some of this is the gameýs attempt at realism, but there is a balance between realism and playability that I think Bohemia Interactive missed. There arenýt many single player missions, and several were of the ýgo here, rendezvous with this squad, steal this car, then refuelý, etc. variety. Why would I want to do any of this? Did I buy this game because I wanted to sneak around the Soviet countryside and pilfer vehicles? Finally, why is there only save point per game? I have plenty more to complain about but Iým out of time (and space).

When i first heard of Operation Flashpoint i thought to myself, "yeah probably another one of those lame shooters..." But, i tried downloading the demo and let me tell you, this game is the best shooter game ever released on pc. As a gamer and an owner of many shooter games, i thought this game was incredible! try it yourself and download the demo. i played this game over...and over...again and each time it turns out different. The game's details are amazing. Graphics are not the best and could be improved but the game itself is just beautiful...try it!

Put Rainbow 6 back in its case, a new game is in town

When I started, I just couldn't stop. This game is absolutely amazing. First there's the ability to ride, pilot, or drive any of the vehicles in the game and then there's the realism. When you run your aiming cursor goes berserk, unlike other games, since your gun is being bounced up and down from the running. The muzzle flashes and sounds are incredibely realistic, too. Then there's this other thing in the realism, the thing that makes it feel so real...that's right, the AI! I actually began to turn around and run at some points as a bunch of enemy soldiers are trying to add me to their kill-list. Usually in a first person shooter you know you have 100 hitpoints and you go off to do some killing. Here, three or four bullets and you are going home in the box. The thing that boggles my mind is that the demo is ONLY 85% complete. With these gameplays features it might as well be done! Imagine what 100% is like, not to mention the campaign and the mission editor! Multiplayer that can rise to 50 v. 50, and you have yourself a game of the century.

Much Better Than I thought

I have to admit, I bought this game because I wanted to play a warsim and really thought that Silent Hunter II would never come out. However, after I bought flashpoint, and a few nights of play, I have become fascinated by it. I expected another Rainbow Six, or Delta Force, but no, this game is much better if you are a player in search of a serious game. None of this sit with your sniper rile like DF, and kill everybody. Or R6 when you run in and have a quick massive firefight. In OFP you have to keep your head about you at all times in a full world experience, Hinds, T-80s, Spetnaz, are all out to get you. If you live long enough as a PFC, you end up commanding your own squad- and keeping them alive, on top of yourself, is quite a challange, espically win the Soviets roll in some tanks!
There are some drawbacks- the pixels on the bushes in the terrain is poor. Also, the control and command in the sections where you drive a tank is not so hot, and the game probably could have done without the senarios when you fly the Apache.
The big pluses- This game has no BS like in DF, where you can sit with your M16 and grenade launcher and take out a town. Here the Russians will come out and find you, and quick. The AI is great. Also, sitting in the bush with your M-16 trying to snipe guys who are shooting back- and you know they can see your muzzle flashes like you can see yours, can be really unnerving! (and isn't that what combat sims are for?)
Get this game- I can't speak highly enough of it. It really was a lot cooler than I thought it would be. Also, check the sites about it. All kinds of neat mods are already being created, as well as new versions that will take place in WWI, WWII, and Vietnam with the game's great software engine.
Thanks

I LOVE THIS GAME, but be careful of requirements!

Hi all,
I have had this game since July, 2001, when it was first released in Europe, and was so excited about it that while I was on vacation there I got it before anyone else in the USA, and I am still NOT sick with it.

It looks SO real, every little detail, and it is a whole new kind of game. Other shooters are all cramped inside a limited area, buildings, arenas. This game, you can be walking for miles and miles and take you half an hour maybe more to reach the other side of the map on foot. You get many many vehicles to drive and have fun with. Tanks, Hummer, all kinds of Helicopters, Jets, Jeep, Civilian Cars, etc...
Then when you are in the Jeep say, then you can look around if you arent the driver and see the other passengers sitting there, see your own feet if you look down, and you can look out of the windows and see the landscape pass by.

You have around 25 different kinds of weapons (also very close to detail, both Russian and American guns) - m16, ak74, ak47, grenade launcher, Anti Air, LAW launcher for tanks, Sniper gun, list keeps going...
In the mission editor, you can even change the weather and time of day. You can have it dark and stormy night with lighting stricking. You actually can see the flashes of lighting. Or the opposite, you can have a blue sky day with the sun high, birds churping (and yes, you can hear them)

Very nice music too! I actually have the songs sometimes stuck in my head. Also, in the missions that the game comes with and also missions you make (with some trouble) you can have the soldiers talk and their mouths move with their talking in either English or Russian.
Though......
One bad thing about this game that I would like to say is that the mission editor is a bit of a pain. Not the easiest of things. Also, internet is very slow unless you have Cable, unlike me with 56K. I still want to give it a five because all the pros to the game greatly beat the cons.

NOTE; Be careful of the requirements!! You need a good videocard, not an Intel which I had, need NVidia, Matrox, 3DFx, ATi, S3, PowerVR, or 3D labs. Trust me! I had a Intel card and had to replace it for a NVidia one because it wasnt supported by the game. Pentium II, 400, 64 MB Ram also as the lowest settings, Highly recommend that you check out the requirements before buying.
