Older But Still Good

Even though FarCry is an older game, the graphics are still phenomenal, and that alone will put it in the video game Hall of Fame. The first of its kind. This game rocks and is definitely worth the money. I suggest it to anyone who likes a great visual when gaming. Excellent purchase!

Great game, a little frustrating

I really enjoyed this game. My only complaint is that it had some pretty annoying parts. Making a game hard is OK, but making it hard by requiring checkpoints to be met to move forward is annoying. Especially, when trying for a checkpoint 30 times only to find an enemy lurking at an unsuspected spot after the main trial is overcome is annoying.

FPS of a different genre

Far Cry isn't Doom, isn't Call of Duty, Isn't Halo, and it isn't Half Life. And that isn't a bad thing. It isn't historical or science fiction/fantasy. It's more of a James Bond/Stephen Segal type adventure. There's a story plot, with a twist at the end. Yeah, the premise is kind of goofy, but it doesn't deter from the entertainment value. Graphics (on my less than ideal Radeon 9000) are great, gameplay is similar to most FPS games. The array of weapons and vehicles is impressive and adds to level of entertainment. The Bad Guys are varied, some believable, some, well...spooky. I actually physically flinched in some sequences.
Yeah, there's a female and a romantic interest, a Super Villian, and an apparent inside ally.
The maps are based around a Pacific island chain, and include some underwater swimming (something different from most). The layout details are topnotch. The use of Japanese WWII relics is unique.
Overall, it kept me locked in for hours, and just when I thought it was getting a little old, it would change for the better.

The bargain price makes it worth a try. There's many other favorable reviews, and, for the most part, they are accurate.

The best game I've played in years

The last time I played a game that was as much of a surprise and as enjoyable as this was in 98 when I played the original Half-Life. In fact this feels very much like HL in many ways, except your on lush pacific islands instead of a New Mexico underground facility. Mixing amazing graphics, with excellent first-person gameplay and throwing quite a bit of humour in too, from Carvers own amusing voice to the comments that the mercs constantly yell while blasting away at monsters, which always crack me up: "I'm gonna lay the smackdown on ya", "I'm gonna tear you a new one", and my favorite - "How'd you like those apples". A really great game.

Excellent FPS that challenges your skills

For the current price, this FPS is a must for anyone looking to fill in the space for the next update to MOH. The storyline is fun and the weapons are effective. Keep the sniper rifle at all times.

Top-Notch FPS

Far Cry is a visually stunning game and your character gets to do some really fun things such as; hang glide, swim (above and below water level), drive humvees to large trucks, drive inflatable and speed boats plus use a large variety of weapons which include handguns, rifles, rocket launchers, grenades and C4. There are many levels to the game, some with multiple objectives. My only objection to this game was the lack of a "Quick Save" feature! You had to reach certain checkpoints within or at the end of each level before the game would auto-save. Even at a medium difficulty setting, after about 1/3 of the game was complete, it became very difficult to reach the next check point without replaying from the prior checkpoint a number of times...got very frustrated. However, even with that issue, the game is so compelling and fun to view and play that I would highly recomend. As an afterthought, having a Far-Cry level walk through would have been nice to have :>)

Excellent game

I find it hard to believe that as good as this game is, it got almost no hype or pub. The game play, artificial intelligence, and graphics are top notch. The stages are enormous and challenging, with a nice mix of enemies -- all of which are extremely intelligent and reactive. With the exception of Half Life 2, the best game ever, this game blows every game out of the water. You must play this game!!

What a game

Great fun. If you have high speed internet, you will love the multiplayer gaming. I play it with Kinyo 5.1 surround headphones ($50) and an Audiology 2 zs soundcard.. Surround sound really makes the game fun. Heck, any FPS is way better with surround sound. You need a serious video card and at least 500M memory too. If you have all this, just get the game. You will find yourself coming back to it again and again, even after you have played newer games like Battlefield 2. And it's only to $20 now!

HINT: you can turn down video settings to increase performance, but leave the "special effects" and "water effects" on medium. The special effects on low will not let you see the glint of a sniper, and water effects on low will not let you see people swimming under water. Evertything else can be cranked to low. It will improve your online response time.

I see why Half-Life barely beat this game

I have a 2.8 GHz P4, 512Meg RAM, Radeon 9200 w/128 Meg video RAM that I played this game on. I understand why Half-Life barely beat this game in some of the ratings. The graphics are OK, definitely cartoon type as opposed to reality colors, but OK. The game itself is a lot of fun because it took me a long time to get to the very end. It was like the neverending saga that I like video games to be. I got through Half Life in a relatively short amount of time compared to Far Cry. The game play is good, BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST VIDEO DRIVERS FOR YOUR CARD! The choice of weapons is pretty sweet because of the realistic nature of the weapons. There are no never-run-out-of-ammo ray guns, just good ole conventional firearms. There are also neat little puzzles that have to be figured out just like many of the other first person shooters. I enjoyed the game. It is right up there with Ghost Recon (but not as many good weapons), Half-Life, Rainbox Six, and the other first person shooters, except that you cannot control a squad (which does not bother me).

Best Combination of Action, Stealth and Tactics ever

You've probably heard all the hype about Far Cry. And much of the hype is true. Experience absolutely gorgeous tropical island environments, awesome music that changes to fit the mood, and challenging AI. (If not, there are a bunch of Far Cry reviews all over the web that you can read.)

You've probably heard that the AI is great, but it gets buggy sometimes. About every 1 in 30 enemies will just stand there and stare in your face, but the rest of the game more than makes up for these occasional bugs. There are several reviews that complain about how Far Cry is spoiled by its ridiculous difficulty, even at moderate settings, plus the lack of a "save-anywhere" system. What's ironic is that these reviews often come from people who claim themselves to be First Person Shooter veterans! Obviously, this proves that just because you've been at something for years doesn't mean you've become very good at it.

I am not even an avid gamer, let alone an FPS veteran, but I started playing Far Cry on the highest difficulty setting and am enjoying every moment of it. Most FPS players, possibly including a number of these self-proclaimed "veteran gamers" have been spoiled by the quick-save system. Where is the fun and challenge in saving before and after each enemy? If you're weak-hearted enough to criticize Far Cry just because you can't save whenever you want to, then do the world a favor and at least don't call yourself an FPS veteran.

In fact, the checkpoint saving system in Far Cry is generous. There are more automatic savepoints in Far Cry than in most other games that use the checkpoint save system. Often generous enough to balance difficulty and enjoyment.

If you want the greatest challenge this type of game has provided so far, get Far Cry and play it on the highest difficulty setting - "Realistic". Most people will agree that this is the most challenging FPS ever made. You'll need all your reflexes, tactics and stealth to get through Realistic mode. Are your headshots good enough?
