A fantastic adventure game from Lucas Arts

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Although it's not as great i repeat great as the Curse Of the Monkey Island it still beats any other adventure game avalible. the graphics are not anything to scream horray for but they are still clean and pure, there are no defect's in the game and the sound is great to, besides being a great graphical adventure it still posesses a great deal of thinking for the user cause there are some mistery's going on in "The Land of the Dead" all the work for the game is very good and they obviously did spend alot of time doing this game so if you are an adventure game lover or you've grown tired of endless Quake playing just get this game buy it or borrow it from a friend .........its worth it........

Not impossible; Just challenging

I found this game to be very fun and engrossing... There are no dead ends and you cannot "die". Some puzzles are indeed challenging, but all of the clues are there, albeit vague. Lack of patience is the game player's enemy in this one. Just keep at it and enjoy the story!

Excellent Puzzle Game

This is a story about a travel agent called Manny Calavera. He is stuck in the land of the living selling packages to the department souls of the dead. And if he sells enough packages he can earn enough to make his final journey.

This game is full of demons, killer beavers, cat races with plenty of characters to chat to. The game has excellent graphics, set in Mexico with includes some creative Mayan architecture.

The story is funny and dramatic but the game manages to succeed in both areas. One minute I was struggling to get through one of the many puzzles and the next I would be laughing till my belly hurt.
I never thought I would find an adventure game with excellent logical puzzles, good animation and story but the first time ever no fighting, kicking, biting or even scratching. The puzzles ranged from easy to tear your hair out but they are all worth it.
I would recommend this game to anyone who loves a true adventure with logical puzzles and without the constant threat of kill or be killed.

Casablanca of the Dead

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

The best part of this game is the story. In the classic Casablanca way, you are trying to put right a wrong that Manny was tricked into commiting. Mercedes, your Ilsa, is forced to strike out on her own when your company screws you (and her) out of her premium trip to the afterlife. It is now up to you, Manny, to find her and get her safely to the other side of the land of the dead.
You are accompanied by a good natured, if not a bit overzealous, mechanic/entity, Glottis, who makes the game more humorous and oddball then scary. Just listening to Glottis and his own mental adventures is a hoot!
I found the gameplay to be very easy and absolutely LOVED the time spent in Rubacava. Manny runs a small casino/bar (sound familiar?) at this level trying to compete with the larger gambling business in town, which happens to be gigantic cat racing.
Gathering clues and items to move you on your way flows easily into the story and as in any great game introduces you to new characters that accentuate the story.
After playing the game a few times, I found myself going back to the Rubacava level over and over just to interact and enjoy the level.
Overall, this is one of the best games I've ever played. Well worth the investment.

Casablanca With an Art Deco Aztec Twist

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Grim Fandango has a very retro feel, sort of like Casablanca with an Art Deco Aztec twist. The game centers around Manny Calavera who is attempting to stay honest and make sense out of a Hispanic day of the dead afterlife which has been corrupted by those who control that afterlife for their own gain. All while Manny pursues the love of his afterlife! Confused? Trust me, it will all make sense once you start playing and the dialog and graphics will impress you and keep you hooked. I've tried a lot of the adventure games and they all have their flaws. But Grim Fandango comes as close to perfect as any game ever will. The controls are a little irritating but not as much as some newer games. This is the best adventure game out there and I strongly recommend that you try it.

Instant Classic

When I first played this game it was a demo back in 1998, and I was blown away.

I bought this game and played it on my good old Pentium 2 350 MHz and I just loved every minute of it!

I still to this day play it at least twice a year! its a shame that all of the Tim Shaffer games though are very, very, very good don't seem to sell well (Psychonauts is another great game).

One of the best!

My son and i played this together when he was still a boy, and it was the most involving and most fun of all the adventure games we played together. And the graphics and small slice of latino life were fabulous, too. Highly recommended for preteens and parents to play together!

Still a good game after all these years

This game is still great. The characters, the storyline, and the acting is exactly what I expected it to be coming from the days when LucasArts was GOOD. Overall, still a great game to play for those looking for an adventure game, but wants a good start.

Only buy if you're a huge PC adventure game fan

I guess PC adventure games just aren't my thing. I tried to like Grim Fandango, I really did. After all the praise it got I assumed it would be awesome. But instead I found it rather boring and filled with bugs. Tedious puzzles, terrible graphics, and countless lock-ups forced me to resort to speeding through the game using a walkthrough just so I could see how the story ended. But hey, if it weren't for the unique and interesting story and characters I wouldn't have bothered beating it at all. And for that I give it 3 stars.

This is the best effort that Lucas Arts has produced to date. They finally use 3d graphics and the story and plot are highly enjoyable. If you are a fan of LucasArts Adventures, this is definately one for the collection
