Proof that a computer game can be a great work of art

Some people have compared Grim Fandango to a great movie. The comparison is apt, but it actually doesn't do this game justice. As much as I love movies, I can't think of a movie I've seen where I've actually been sad that the movie was over, as I might feel after I've finished a great book. As I realized I was looking at the last shot of the game, I was overcome with this sadness. The game has flaws, but they are all technical... a few bugs, a few quirks. But I wouldn't even think about dropping the rating of the game on that basis, because everything else about the game is such an accomplishment. Computer games don't have the right to be this good. On an artistic level, everything is first rate. The voice acting: brilliant all around... the actors deserve mention: Tony Plana is dead on perfect as Manny Calavera, Maria Canals nails the sexy and mysterious side of Meche, and Alan Blumenfeld is hilarious as Glottis. And there are are more... I hope that they are all proud to have worked on a game like this, even if a game ain't the most sparkling thing on an actor's resume. The writing: equally superb... the humour is subtle and sophisticated (can't get enough of the open mic gag at The Blue Casket!) the drama is evocative... the writing is half of the reason the acting was so great... the actors really had stuff they could sink their teeth into. The art direction: the cities and landscapes they create are so vivid... I actually had dreams about Rubecava. Anyway... I could go on for hours about the grand achievment that is Grim Fandango. This game is only $10 right now on Amazon.... that is a ridiculous bargain! This isn't just a great computer game... it is a great, interactive work of art.

LucasArts makes another great game!

This game is one of the best games along with the Monkey Island series. The game starts with a dead guy named Manny Calavera who sells travel tickets to people who are dead. This game has decent graphics but the real great thing about this game is the story and fun. The story is really alot deeper than my description. This game is challenging and will take you a while to complete. This game is one of the best. Buy it!

This game has *everything*

Lots of fun, excitement, dramatic moments... this game has all I could possibly ask for in an adventure. Heavy in film noir influence (a misterious dame, a world weary hero, a likeble sidekick), Grim Fandango never drags thru any part of it. The atmosphere is great, the locations well imagined, the background (based on Mexico's Day of the Dead) fits perfectly. The voice acting is superb and there's even a death scene that managed to get a tear out of my eye.

I recommend this game to anyone interested in the genre (be it adventure games, film noir, or Lucas Arts games in general).

Grim Fandango shows the brighter side of death.

After playing the Monkey Island games I thought I would never find another one as fun to play. But I was wrong. Grim Fandango is that game.
Just starting off the game is fun and it only gets better. Packed with hundreds of puzzles to propell you through this underworld of limbo and filled with interesting characters at every turn, this is one game you will never be ashamed to own.
You are a travel agent to the dead and you are on a mission to expose the corrupt organization yuo work for. Sound hard. Well it's not. It could take you a while to get through and it is a challenge to solve the puzzles that will get you to your goal, but the game is so fun and humorous that the time will just fly by.
I have owned this game for a while and I have to say that I love playing it. I have finished it about 4 times and it gets funnier everytime I load it up.
If you love funny adventure games in the Monkey Island style, Grim Fandango is the game for you. And it is made by LucasArts...the same company that makes quality games like all the Star Wars line and my personal favorite, Monkey Island.
Get this game and see the brighter side of death.

Lots of fun, and quite funny. Makes me wonder why so many other companies don't make fun adventure games anymore.

DON'T BUY THIS GAME.......

....If you don't want to be spoilt for just about all other games. I played this several years ago for the first time and I just keep playing it over every few months. The mood of this game is incredible and it's so wonderfully conceived. It's ruined my PC gaming experience. I haven't been able to buy another game since, because I want to continue the Grim Fandango experience and there just aren't any games out there these days that come close to this classic. I know every other game will just disappoint me :(

I was a big Monkey Island fan, but GF just blew me away. PLEASE Lucas Arts, make another great game like this one and quick before I wear out my GF disk...........

Grim Fandango deserves to be a classic and is so involving with its suptuous backdrops, dry humour and fantastic plot and loveable characters, it is sure to become a favourite in your game collection. If you are anything like me you will often want to play it again, just like you would watch a great movie over and over.

This is a game that was enjoyed by teens to adults. Manny is very entertaining, and it keeps you interested throughout. Good graphics, no problems with running it repeatedly and for hours on end!

The other reviews describe the plot and gameplay, so this review will focus on the element that really makes this a game that is not to be passed up - the graphics. This is the most beautiful game I've ever played. Sure there are a lot of games that have more realistic or moodly graphics, but there are none which are more masterfully rendered. Grim Fandango presents one cut scene after another that perfectly capture the best elements of Mexican "Day of the Dead" art, film noir, and the style of Shag. I'm very tempted to buy a high quality laser printer just to capture and print images from this game to display in my den/tiki bar.

Like all computer games the publishing life of Grim Fandango is limited. I urge you to buy this game now while you still can.

Love it

I have to say I am not "great" at this type of games but I truely love GF. This was an entertaining game: story line and "puzzles." It kept me interested the whole time I played and I was quite sad when the game came to an end. I wish they would create a sequel to this game.

Film Noir Atmosphere

This is a great game for adventure game fans. You can wonder around at your leisure, and the dialog is actually entertaining.
Our hero, Manny, inadvertantly finds a bit of corruption in the office, and ends up doing some harm himself when he tries to get ahead. This harm involves an injustice to a very attractive lady, so Manny is on his way to right a wrong, and hopefully get the gal (or is she really a femme fatale?...)
Great fun, very cinematic in tone, and some nice jazzy music.
