What had the potential to be one of the greatest online games has since it's very shaky launch gone steadily if not downhill, somewhat sideways. They fix one problem and make two more in the precess. This game still has so many bugs, gameplay faults and class imbalances, two months after launch that I cannot recommend even trying to play it. I say the pefect MMORPG is yet to be created. My money is on Blizzard and WOW. If you can't wait for that, be very wary of jumping right in at launch. You WILL end up being a paid bug finder.
its junk

Never have I played a game with such promise and with such poor execution.
Funcom's billing is horrendous - there's a good chance you will end up with all sorts of charges.
There is no support whatsoever. Email support and you may be lucky enough to get back an automated message a week later.
They have virtually no testing/QA. Recently they released a patch ON A FRIDAY which resulted in invulnerable mobs and a huge increase of mob vs pc power.
It's [junk]. Find something else.

The title of my review says it all. There are so many problems with this game I could go on for hours talking about them. But since most of those problems have been described in numerous other reviews here, I'll go straight to my summation....
Save your money. Save your time. Save yourself. Don't buy AO.
Graphics great ...lag and disconnects make this unplayable

I signed on from day one of retail and it has been downhill ever since. This game is even buggier than when it was first released, if you can believe that! They have absolutely no customer service. Emails and in game help requests go unanswered. Aside from the pretty graphics and if you can get it running long enough before crashing, you soon discover the game inside is very shallow. The mission generator makes the same boring missions except you have different wall textures. Game balance doesn't exist and they're still constantly nerfing character classes. Everybody is cancelling their account in droves. Ironically, this may improve lag for those of you foolish enough to stay.
Not my words, but absolutly true. BIG BUMP!!!
A very boring game because it has no real goals as an RPG

Software Quality:
REALLY REALLY BAD. Patches that adds serious bugs into the game. New features that is actually a cover up for the bugs introduced. Terrible. Bugs include not being able to hit monster from time to time, cannot even log on your character for days, items disappear for no reason, and 1000000000 other serious bugs. People are already level 200 before the offical story line starts supposedly in september......
Gameplay:
If you don't mind playing an EXTREMELY buggy game. AO does have a really good character development system, lots of classes, lots of ways to develop each class.
However, there is no "content" in AO. By that I mean there is nothing you can do WITH your level and equipment, besides gaining more level and equipment. So you gain a sense of doing stuff for nothing, which turns AO into a EXTREMELY boring game.
And for PvP people, with so many bugs and so many new stupid "features" going in each patch, PvP is terrible.
Anarchy Online is a game that cannot be passed up

I have been an avid player of Everquest and Asheron's call for the past year and a half or so. Both were good... but both needed major improvements in many areas. The first time I heard of Anarchy Online, I thought that it would share the same problems that EQ and AC have. Surprisingly, AO doesn't. If you want a rough sketch of what Anarchy Online is like, then think of a MMORPG, set in space, where all the frustrations of EQ and AC have been completely taken out, the put back in, morphing them into great features. FunCom obviously studied EQ and AC, because everything that was BAD about those two games exist in AO, however, those bad features are actually very useful when implemented properly. The game has been out only for a week or so, which simply means a lot of server problems. These similar server problems happened to both EQ and AC when they first were released and have been completely fixed, as will AO's servers very soon. The gameplay in AO is excellent. Everything is well though out, balanced and (finally) fun to play. One thing that almost scared me was the amount of music this game has. Pretty much ever area that you're in, there will be music which suits the setting perfectly. It scared me since AC has no music at all, and EQ has some music which is really crappy. Simply put, AO is a godsend in the sound department. The graphics are much better than in any other MMORPG- much more detailed and fluid. There is too many good things to write about in this review, but let me leave you with this: Right now (right after release), the servers are crap. They WILL be fixed, and when they are, AO will blow every other MMORPG straight out of the water. AO deserves 5 stars, since it is the closest MMORPG to perfection so far.
The first Sci-Fi MMORPG, and it works!

Let's be honest, the first three weeks of AO's release were miserable for players and, I would imagine, Funcom. Funcom spent an incredible amount of time making AO an enjoyable, playable product. The initial problems have been corrected, and aside from a few minor issues, the game is in a very playable state. When considering buying AO, keep the following in mind: First: This is *very* much a Sci-Fi game. You won't find any pixies or goblins, and aside from a rather beautifully rendered area called Avalon (Which contains Camelot), the majority of cities are futuristic. You can still hack and slash with melee weapons, but Funcom managed to make range weapons a viable choice for primary combat. Second: If you're looking for an update to UT or Half-Life, look elsewhere. This game is based in a persistent world, in which character development is the primary gauge of progress. Like other MMORPGs before it, much of the action and interaction with the world is text based. You'll still get plenty of adrenaline kicks if you get into it, but that's not the focus. Third: Unlike EverQuest, AO allows for very individualized characters and professions. You can, for example, play a Doctor that uses piercing weapons, specializes in jet piloting, and constructs heavy weapons as a trade skill. The old "Cookie-Cutter Syndrome" of EQ has been mitigated by Funcom's creative and well-implemented Improvement Points system. Finally: Anarchy Online is ***FUN*** . Unlike EverQuest, you won't spend 15 minutes in between each fight, or lose 10 hours of experience per death. If you specialize in treatment, you can heal yourself effectively, cutting back on downtime tremendously. Clearly, Funcom made AO to be a fast-paced game, rather than a mind-numbing dirge of repetitive tedium, a la EQ. AO is much more light-hearted and player-centered than EQ... You won't feel like there's a vengeful Dungeon Master trying to ruin your gaming experience at all costs. AO has its problems, but in light of other games in the genre, it is a solid game with definite staying power. Don't hesitate to try it out!
Has been much improved.

I have owned this game for about 3 weeks now and I already see improvements. Disconnections still happen but most are the fault of my ISP. Everyday the game improves and the storyline will be officially launched on Oct 31. I recommend trying out Funcom's 7day trial to see what you think... then go buy it because I think the upcoming 4 year story will be great. A new patch is imminent in the next week or so that will fix the bugs that remain. 4 stars because it still needs work but has excellent potential.

This game is going to be one of the games of the year. It is basically a futuristic, multiplayer, action, with a little twist. You get to chose from two types of characters. One on the side of good, one on the side of evil. Depending who you chose, makes the game different. There are rebels and Omni-Tek. Omni-Tek=bad, Rebel=good. With the Omni-Tek you get good armor, and good weapons fast. But, you get ordered around until higher levels, when you can become a sargeant or a General. With the rebels, you don't get that good of armor fast, but you don't get bossed around. In the game, since these clans are so different, you can go to war with them. You set up plans, and then attack! How cool is that? Whoever said this game is bad, well...thats pretty silly.
