Desktop madness

I'll make this short and sweet. AO is very unstable, which can be sometimes tolerated but the main complaint that I, and others, have is that Funcom reinvents itself every two weeks with constant nerfing.

For example : You like your character, you have acquired equipment, you modeled him to be a two pistol wielding killer with very rare and nice armor. You are in heaven but then Funcom decided make some changes in a routine patch of the game.

Your pistols cannot be dual wielded, the monsters hit and cast spells much harder and faster, your armor was deleted from the database and you can no longer do much of anything. This may seem far fetched but it is the simple truth unfortunately.

The game is not finished, the company is incompetent and destructive, the frustration level is staggering, and you are forced to constantly scrap current characters and "re-roll" to make a viable fighter.

If you like masochism you will like Anarchy Online. If you don't then I would suggest that you please pass this game by on the shelf and encourage all others to do the same.

this game can be fun, but it is nerfed, has been patched to a playable level. ignore the level fest, the only way to be happy in this game is enjoy your newbie lvls.

I'll try to make this helpful.

Ok. I am currently playing this game. Personally, I think its great! Ok, just 2 days ago they wrote a server patch to reduce the lag. Sure, almost every day they shut down the server for an hour or 2 to change the server or to add a patch, but that means that EVERY DAY the game gets better. The game is NOT for low end systems, no matter how much lag is reduced. I'm playing on a Celeron 400Mhz w/ a Rage 128 card. Of course, I consider this a VERY low end system now. I got it thinking that since the minimum requirement is PII 300, I could run it fine. WRONG! In the big cities (especially Omni-1) the game LAGS. I have about thirty seconds to run around before my computer is overcome. BUT, they are writing patches to improve this! And besides, I have a LOW LOW end system. (I'm getting a new one this week, so I still can rate the game well) The game isn't hard to get into, and its easy to learn. It should have had a practice single player campaign though. So, WHY am I giving this game 4 stars? Because, its the best online sci-fi rpg out there. I don't like all that fantasy stuff, bring out the ultra modern shiny black augmented body armour, baby! Bottom line is, if you have anything over a PIII 500, and a decent 3d card, BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!

The most immersive multi-participant virtual world yet

This game is utterly fascinating and highly addictive. I have read of many users' woes about the early stages of the game, but I would say the bulk of major complaints have been fixed. On a P4 1.3GHz system with 512 MB and a TNT2 Pro, I get 10+ FPS framerates, even in densely populated cities. There is no appreciable lag in server response, and I have played extensively on a poor modem connection with great results. Of course, I would never have played at all if I did not have access to a T1 at work to download the 50+ megs of mandatory patches...
The world itself is the strongest feature. It is wonderfully detailed, enormous and beautiful in its own right and represents an unthinkable amount of work. I can not stress too much that this is the most believable virtual space ever made, for any reason. It really is a place you can go. The sky, complete with weather and moving heavenly bodies alone would be mind-blowing.
The choice of characters' breeds, professions, implants, clothing, skill allocation, etc. produces a combinatorial explosion of complexity resembling the real world in some ways. All characters are truly unique. They have crossed a threshold of complexity here, beyond which things just start coming alive of their own volition.
The great pity is that there is little to do other than killing monsters and each other in this marvelous world. Trade skills are crippled, and Funcom has recently nixed anything but combat-based missions (alas). To make matters worse, combat is boring and automatic. Not unlike repeatedly rolling dice, as in the old days...
That the effort is inconsitent in so large a project is unsurprising. Nonetheless, some of the problems break my heart because they severely limit what could be one of the most satisfying experiences currently possible in the medium of online gaming.
Still and all, though, this is the best ever, and getting better. Try it and don't let it die from bad PR and annoyed early adopters. Yes, Funcom brought this anger on itself, but once you play AO you'll realize that Rubi-Ka is too good to be sacrificed for somebody's quarterly earnings statement.

great game. only a few days left till release now

I'm in the Beta 4 test and I love this game. Some bugs are still there like disappearing items once and a while but it really makes up for it. Some people have been saying that Clans is tougher and the best ppl will be on it but if you choose Neutral and both sides think you're against them, now THAT would be hard. I've played on both Omni and Clans and it's a great game.

MMORPG fetal stage

Many people have been giving this game bad reveiwes becuase of technical problems, but what we all need to remember is that these are typically due to client side issues. I have been playing quite often and I have had few if any problems. I'm running a P- Celeron at 466 with a voodoo 3 card 16mb of mem. and 256 ram, I have some of the rendering options turned off, and I have had very few problems. Something a lot of people are not realizing is that this genre is in the relative fetal stage and that open beta cannot predict the problems of 1000 logged on users. The game has a great detting as well as good game play, and for those of us who are sick of the fantasy RPG, it is a refreshing twist. I urge people to try this game, at the very least, give it a shot and if you keep bombing out, then go from there.

An honest review

I have never written a review before... but after seeing some of of the ones on this site, I thought it's important to give people an honest review.

First off, at it's current state, the game is frustrating at times and incredibly lagy. But, aside from the technical problems, the game itself is AWESOME and FUN. The graphics, sound/music are just amazing for an MMORPG. The character building is also great and realy flexible. I loved EQ except for the fact that it required sittings of at least 2 hrs (minimum) to get anywhere. With AO, i can pop in for 30 mins and just have fun. The customized mission builder is also realy cool. NO MORE CAMPING. In general the game is a lot of fun, no matter how much time you have to play.

I would give this game 5 stars if not for the technical problems that it's currently facing. In summary, this is a great game but if you're impatient wait another month before you buy it.
