Now that this game has come down from it's debut price it is finally worth the money. If you have the computing horsepower to play this game at it's highest settings buy without worries, you will get your $ worth. If you are split between buying this or Halflife 2 however, skip this in favor of halflife, it really is a better playing, better looking game.

AWESOME GAME!

I must say that this game has got me immersed. The graphics and sounds are nice and the whole setup is pretty eerie and the detail is impressive, from the UAC facilities, the labs, sounds, to the creatures moving along the walls.
The occasional going out of the lights does create a scary environment and keeps your heart beating because you don't know what's around the next corner or in that dark corner to the side. It's a great game, but sometimes the darkness gets annoying and sifting through the PDAs to find a code to open up the storage lockers for weapons is a pain, but I got around that issue by deciding to use the cheat console. I gave myself all weapons, which might seem like ruining the gameplay but it really doesn't; actually it's more fun because you have all the firepower and can just enjoy the shooting. Yet, I did not turn any invincibility on; it would spoil the fun too much. I totally agree with the person who rants about the flashlight part. Why couldn't they put it in a helmet or mount it on the weapon???
Nevertheless, DOOM3 is a must-have for any gamer.

great game-not for all ages

I've been playing this game for a couple of days now and here are a few things I've realized.
1.this game is not for children,I am 25 years old and noticed after hours of game play I felt more aggressive, and more easily irritated than I did before starting the game.
2.this game is not as demanding on your computer as most people would have you believe.my computer has a 3.2 GHz processor and graphics card with 128 MB of RAM,and this game runs beautifully with the graphics set on high,I'm talking about no slowdown at all.
3.the game is great.I've never played parts 1/2,so I'm not sure what true fans of the series expected,I've heard complaints about the flashlight, and the darkness.switching between the flashlight and your favorite weapon is a part of the strategy of the game.as far as the scary factor, this game is best played at night, but let's be real, which horror game isn't?
4.price,when I bought this game a couple of days ago it was $29.99,that's practically a budget title,at this price there should be absolutely no complaints at all,for only $30 you are purchasing hours of great game play, some of the best graphics you will you can get on any title, and a few good scares in the dark.
5.if you are into horror/sci-fi this game is a must play. this game is Dawn of the Dead meets...any outer space movie,so get your keyboard and mouse and enjoy all the gory goodness this title has to offer.

A truly frightening horror experience.

This is not a game for the weak of heart. Or a game for crappy computers. If you want to play Doom 3, but don't have a decent graphics card, get an X-Box or buy a new graphics card.

Like every other review, I'm going to comment on the graphics. Holy crap. This game is the epitaph of graphic prowess. The lighting, shadows, effects, bump mapping, physics engine, AI, weapons designs, and creatures are truly top notch.

The story is simple: Hell has broken loose on Mars, luckily for you, you aren't affected by the demon outbreak. You have just arrived on Mars, this is an unfamiliar facility, good luck finding your way around.

Basically, this game gives what nearly all FPS fans want: Run and gun with an interesting backdrop. That's right, there are a few "find a key" moments, but other than that, you fight through hordes of demons to get to another plot point (EG a CGI Cinema).

The weapons loadout is really neat, I love that the Doom creators added a regular machine gun in addition to the chain gun. But, I hated having to switch between my flashlight and guns when I'm being attacked.

Don't really expect character development for people who really want to "care" about the main character. He doesn't have a name (Unless you add one for the PDA's sake), nor does he speak one sentence in the entire game.

Now, the game itself is creepy. You could be walking along listening to the radio transmissions from you slaughtered comerades, suddenly, the lights go out and you have to switch to your flashlight. Then, out of nowhere a demon comes FLYING at you.

My recommendation, if you want to be the least scared, turn on your lights, turn up the brightness, turn off the music, wear a diaper, and go get 'em.

10/10

Best Horror game EVER!!!

The best computer game I've ever bought. Having played Doom 1 and 2 I can safely say this game is lightyears away from those first dinky 3-D environments. The lighting effects (or the lack of any lights at all,) the beatifully crafted monsters, the easy-to-follow and structured storyline, and the beatifully rendered environments make this game a must have! It will give you and your computer a run for your money. Some parts are sooooo scary that they even make me jump right out of my chair! The poke-your-eye-out pitch black hallways (which are not always a good idea, by the way) and the lightning fast imps make this one chaaaaalenging simulation. Weapon! I have not mentioned them. The weapons are wonderful! Oh, man how I relax shooting a zombie with a shotgun! How fun! Yay! Buy this game. It is very good. Five stars!

Very Entertaining and Scary at Times.......

Basically, you are a marine on Mars in the distant future, when the colossal base you're in gets attacked by a mysterious, and unknown demonic force. Many of your (former) buddies turn into ghastly looking zombies hungry for human flesh, and you need to fend off insane looking creatures coming up from the subterranean depths of the station to kill you.

Some of the scenes are actually very compelling, such as looking out into the grey and windy Martian landscape, and into the nebulous sky, or the surreal visuals when traversing the planet on foot in your trusty spacesuit.

The graphics are the best out so far in computer gaming, and there are times when your heart's pulse really starts pounding due to the intense fright factor. A very interesting overall experience.

Scariest Game Ever!

Being a hardcore gamer for years, I found this game to be the scariest of them all. I think of it as playing a horror movie where I am the main star and everything is out to get me. The graphics and sound are amazing. The game is very well done to keep you on the edge of your seat, and just when you least expect it... scare the living hell out of you! It includes an awesome range of weapons selection, multiple lethal enemies, powerups and huge levels. Don't play this game alone and in the dark, it will terrify you!

DOOM 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been waiting an entire 10 years for this game and all I can say is WOW! The graphics and gameplay are INSANELY SWEET, and worth the wait, and even the hassle of upgrading your system.

Yes, I purchased and installed Doom on August 3rd. My system looked like this:

Pentium 2.3 ghz, 768mb RAM, 120 gig HD, GeForce 4 MX 64mb

Although I have a nice processor and RAM, the video card sucked, the game basically ran like crap, even in the lowest possible resolution. (Don't believe them when they say its playable even on crappy systems. It plays, but its not playable, even with my nice processor and RAM. Make sure you upgrade, and as I'm about to prove, it doesnt cost a lot)

Anyway, I spent the next 24 hours trying to locate a new video card. I wanted something north of $400, like the Radeon 9800 XP 256, or something along those lines.

ALL the stores in my area were sold out. I called a bizillion places, all over the state of NJ and all over NYC, telling them I will drive 2 hours to them, if they can just get me a good memory card, or point me to another store that would have it. To no avail.

Eventually, after my 24 hour search, I gave in and purchased a Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb for $250, from my local Circuit City. I installed it and had some problems with the drivers.. finally got it complete at midnight, a day after I bought Doom. (By now I was either going to go insane or actually make Doom playable)

BOTTOM LINE

With just the Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb and the rest of what I listed above, THE GAME RUNS GREAT!!!!!!!! I'm REALLY happy I didn't buy my one and only other option (a $750 card)

I am running it perfectly smooth in HIGH, 1280x1024 !!!!!!!!

Anyway I really can't believe that this card and this system is running this game so fast. WHATS REALLY WIERD, is the fact that with my new card, running it in the lowest resolution actually makes it run WORSE.

Yes, as I increased the resolution and the detail, my Radeon 9800 PRO 128 actually stepped up to the task, and ran the game even better. I think one of the reason's it's working so well is maybe because of my 768 RAM? On LOW, 640x480, it looks like garbage and runs choppy. On HIGH, 1280x, it runs SMOOTH.

I really don't know. Maybe a demon from hell possessed my computer. But my advice is even if it runs bad in a lower setting, try some higher settings, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

After I got it running, I stayed up and played it for about an hour... the game is amazing. After getting only 6 hours sleep, here I am at work, and I can't wait to get home and play some more DOOM.

There's no question about it... this game is just not another FPS, it's DOOM 3. Like Doom 1 on steroids, with better technology. You gotta get it, especially if you were a fan of the original.

Will this game ship on August 3?

I'm just curious if Amazon will have enough copies of Doom3 to ship out all of the pre-ordered copies the day of the release??? Does anyone know?

Doom 3 is the best

Doom 3 is going to be one of those games that will scare the pants off of you. Walking into a room with no lights, and you only have a flashlight, ooo scary! The 4 players only online will be sucky, but it will only take a week or two before some modding group changes that and will let people play with more players online. Yes, Doom 3 is going to require good graphics cards and all the top of the line hardware. But you can still play it without those items. A person just has to set all the settings on low, or off and Doom3 will probably run fine. DOOM # ROCKS.
