i actually understand the plot now!
i give it quite a few stars for gore factor, and i was immensely impressed with the graphic quality, especially in how the flashlight was 98% necessary to get through almost all the areas in the game. My computer choked a bit if too many enemies showed up, so be sure you have a graphics card that can deal with it.
It's Dark... I mean really really dark....

yeah. It so dark you actully need the Flashlight feature of the game. but that the problem. The flash light take up the place of a weapon spot, and can not be shined while using another weapon.
All that aside, the phycological Mind... Ummmm, you know what I'm about to say.
A word of advice... Learn scream at you TV or Computer monitor at the top of you lungs while swaring up a storm, becuase some time that what it takes t get your self through this game...

Doom 3 is a good buy if you are a fan of PC Games as a passtime. The graphics in this game is very high quality so that you would enjoy it all through. Its definitely better than its predecessors. Unless you are worried about wasting too much time playing games and not working at all over long periods (may be weeks together) you are fit for this game. If you are an amature, you would be wasting some time figuring out what to do. Once you have figured out that bit it is highly addictive.
Overall, if you are looking for taking some time out of work to do nothing buy this game. You wont regret!

I've been waiting a long time for hardware to catch up (without spending an arm and a leg on it) and allow Doom 3 to run smoothly on a typical gaming PC. I'm glad to announce that time has come. The graphic are great and the video is smooth. On a side note, you may not want to play this one in a dark room because it will truly suck you in. It's also a little more then a first person shooter. I was pleased to have to think once in a while and get real rewards for doing so.
Great single player game, but make sure your system rocks

Yes, I agree that not having some type of illumination device better than a flashlight is pretty lame. But, how are they going to scare you if you can see everything?
Before you play this game, make sure you have the latest video card drivers. I have a pentium 4 3GHz with a nvidia Ge force FX 5200. My frame rates were pretty crappy when rockets and plasma bombs were plentiful, even at the lowest detail setting and lowest resolution. However, upon visiting Nvidia's web site and installing the most recent version of the graphics drivers my frame rate improved greatly. Don't use the graphics drivers that microsoft wants you to use when you visit windows update. At this point, I would like to complain bitterly about direct 3d. Every game I have played with direct 3d has had a lower frame rate than open gl. I am dissappointed that it seems like all the new games will only use direct 3d, but maybe if everyone uses direct 3d the video card manufacturers will actually spend some time on the drivers.
Anyway, Doom 3 is a great game, but it is one of those games where I found myself thinking "is it over yet?". In my opinion there was too much repetitive killing and not enough plot.
Solid and scary single player game

Ok I don't get some of the sour reviews on this board. Some people seem to think games aren't for fun anymore but have to be revolutionary. Well I'm one of those people who rather plays something that is fun and executed well but not very orginal then a revolutionary game that is executed very poorly. Of course the ultimate game combines both, like half-life, but those games are rare.
Doom3 falls into the first category. It doesn't offer much new things, exept for the graphics and shadowing. It's a very, very basic shooter. But it's executed in such a perfect way that this doesn't matter at all.
The main reason for this is the atmosphere in general. I've never played a game that was this immersive. It's like you're actually there, on a Martian base being invaded by hellish monsters. There are a lot of things that create a world around you that lives and could be a real place. There's people talking to each other, promotion or information video's playing on screens and computers you can interact with trough a brilliant system (there's no use-key, but when you approach a machine or computer your weapon will lower and your crosshair changes into a mouse cursor). Overall the hallways and rooms are dark and grim, like the first Alien-movie.
Besides the environment sounds are very realistic too. There's allmost no music. The music is replaced by real sounds of computers, machines, pipelines etc etc etc. This makes the game even more immersive, especially when later on the sounds get weirder and more hellish.
To add even more to the atmosphere, there's the PDA, a device that allows you to download video's and the e-mails/audio-logs of dead people (kinda like the translator in Unreal, only a lot better). The logs of former workers are a very sharp contrast with the promotion video's. The latter describes the UAC as a beautifull workplace, but the reality is a lot more grim and dark.
You might think such detaills are trivial, but for me it's little stuff like this that gives the game something extra and prevents it for getting boring after a while.
Like I said before, the game is VERY basic. Not everyone will like it becouse of that. Shoot monster, reload gun, continue is what you will do most of the time. There's some small trips on the martian surface (with limited air supply) and you'll get a brilliant level in hell, and of course there's some boss-fights, but most of the game is situated inside the UAC-base slowly transforming into hell.
But somehow the game didn't bore me at all, exept for a few times. Everytime you think the game gets boring, something new is trown into the mix: a new enemy is introduced, you have a sentry bot helping you, you may ride on a monorail etc.
Now about the scaryness: the game totally succeeded in scaring me on many occasions. I only played at night with the lights off, slowly progressing and absorbing every detaill, and I must admit there were some places were I was allmost too scared to move on. I urge you to play the game at nights and immerse yourself into the environment. The game is meant to be played that way. It's like being IN a horror movie instead of watching it. The very cinematic cutscenes and good voice acting really add to this too.
In other aspects the game also shines. The monsters are very nice opponents. Alltough they don't share Einsteins IQ, they can be quite dangerous and they're not exactly dumb either.Running into a room without being carefull is not a wise thing to do and will probably cost you your life. Design of most monsters looks fabulous and each of them has it's own tactics and creepy sounds.
Your arsenal is quite basic (but then again this isn't weird, since you're on a remote facility) but every weapon works well and fit within the game. The soulcube was a nice idea and adds a nice extra factor into it during the later levels.
Of course there are some weaker points. I found the gameplay to be very good the first time. You know that crossing a room will probably trigger some monster, but first time you allmost never know when and from which direction it will happen and which monster it will be (in other words how bad it will be). The second time this factor is largely gone, which makes the game a lot less scary. In other words, the replay value of Doom3 is quite low. Nightmare might be fun to try but doesn't add enough to replay the entire game.
I didn't try the multiplayer so I can't comment on that.
I bought this game to get a solid and scary single player shooter, and that's exactly what I got.
If you're way of thinking is the same as mine, you should really buy this game. If you expect more, don't bother.

This game will keep you in suspense and have you jump in your seat a few times. It is fantastic considering the price is a lot less than other comparable games such as Crysis.
Your heart will beat faster as you penetrate deep into the levels that are swarming with zombies and other gruesome creatures all out to destroy you. Multiple save features are useful in that you begin where you were eliminated.
WELL WORTH the money, exciting and fun to play it will keep you mesmorized for hours on end!!!!

gave the game to my 12 yo son as a gift on recommendation from other kids in 14-17 yo range. its a little scary just because of hte realism but he cant put it down. absolutely loves the graphics. word of caution to buyers: check your pc specs first. this requires a lot of resources.
Fun once you figure it out

I have to admit that at first I was very disappointed because I couldn't figure out how to get to places I was supposed to go. The manual is no help and you're pretty much left on your own to figure things out. I found a few websites that had maps and tips/tricks (and even cheat codes) that helped a lot! Once you get past the initial confusion this game is as much fun as the original Doom but with better foes and improved graphics.
