Doom 3 is one of the best first-person shooters ever. And also the scariest. You star as a lonely marine navigating through a base on Mars that's somehow opened up a portal to Hell. You begin to figure out the storyline through journals. All the classic weapons are back. All the frights are back. Doom is back and better than ever. The only first-person shooter that I say is better might be Half-life 2. But that's my opinion.
Outstanding

Almost my favorite. On my favorite list it is 1st place or 2nd place. Scary. Not as scary as Resident Evil. Scary. Buy it right this second and you wont regret it unless you are afraid of the dark...

For those who are interested in hearing more about 'Can I play this game on my system"?, I thought I would throw in my 2 cents because I wondered also. I installed this game on my PC (1 of 3). It is a Dell Dimension 8100.
The specs are:
Pentium 4, 512Mb Ram, 1.5 Ghz processor, Video card is a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra.
Video settings are the biggest factor when selected of how smooth the game will run based on your system. The stronger your system, the higher the settings can be without negative affects in game play, such as jerking or pauses. The game selects your video automatically based on your system. It set mine at a Medium level default video setting. There appears to be 4 choices, Low, Medium, High, and then a setting most will never see. You can manually change the video settings to try and squeeze out more and see how it runs.
The Medium video setting presents beautiful graphics and the game runs smoothly even in battle with my system. I am VERY pleased with the result of gameplay.
Hope this helps those looking for this to be explained.

Ok let me get straight to the point.I DO NOT dislike this game.I have NOTHING against it and it IS worth the wait. For the last 4 years ID has been working on this 14 milliion dollar masterpiece and pretty much its probably worth every cent. Its got everything...gOOD graphics, good gameplay, good atmosphere and very good storyline. Many of you reviewers feel that the game is repetitive and lacks good gameplay, but thats not my point of view.
GRAPHICS
The game has good graphics.....sorry the game has AMAZING graphics.Like Jonh Carmack said , using the buff mapping technology is very important.Every minute detail is highlighted with excellent quality shadows and lighting effects. This is probably on of the strong points of DOOM3.
GAMEPLAY
I really don't know why people don't like the gameplay.I found the gameplay pretty cool.ITS go out shoot zombies,Interact with a computer, open a door and shoot more zombies.BUT this is what DOOM 3 is about. The scary atmosphere puts DOOM 3 in its name. The gameplay is excellent.I really love it.
ATMOSPHERE
ITs SCARY,HAUNTING,NIGHTMARISH,DISTURBING,GRAPHICAL,AMAZING,FUTURISTIC,DETAILED,BREATHTAKING,EYE OPENING,HEART POUNDING,SHADOWED,ALIEN INFESTED AND EXTREMELY DARK.
SCARE FACTOR.
I don,t even want to talk about it otherwise i won,t sleep properly.
SETBACKS
Annoying loading screens which are very long, too dark environment, switching between a torch and gun,too tough aliens which don,t wanta die and the apperances of aliens freom almost every nook and corner.
OVERALL I GIVE THIS GAME 8/10
not 13, but GREAT GAME

Lol, I only said I was young because I was too lazy to fill out forms, anyways..... This is a GREAT game. It is great remake. The graphics are simply amazing, and the enviroments will give a war veteran the chills.
I recommend thiis game to everyone. DO NOT get this game is you do not like shooter romps with solitary play only. This is not your Rainbow Six... Everyone says this game is very average and is repetitive, but thats because they are blowing through the game!! Take a minute and examine things. The hidden easter eggs in this game will keep you entertained and laughing all the way to the end. (Watch out for Cyber Demon!!)
The best game ever made by a very wide margin

I just finished Doom 3 (took about 30 hours to do it on normal level). This game is the best game I've ever played and I've played them all (well, all the good ones that is). The new rendering engine is nothing short of magnificent and significantly raises the bar for graphics in PC games. Oddly enough, Doom 3 is very forgiving if you have a mediocre system. You WILL need a modern graphics card (less than 3 years old) because the new rendering engine works specifically because it takes such advantage of what these cards can do. If you are getting crappy performance, it's not the game. It's probably viruses infecting your computer. The only way to fix this is to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. You will be shocked at the system performance you get back. Anyhoo, the sound is also the best I've ever heard in a game. Play it with good headphones on and you will discover that it is fully 3 dimensional and immersive.....amazing. But, what really makes Doom 3 special is the environment. It's downright malevolent the way the game pushes your psychological buttons. Many people can't play very long at any one time....it's that emotionally gripping and scary. This game is absolutely, under no uncertain terms, for children of any age. If it was a movie, it would be rated R. Also, Doom 3 is not some mindless shooter. The AI is very advanced. Monsters are tough and they use strategy and situational awareness against you. They also love to ambush you in various ways. Since much of the environment has limited lighting or is even in pitch dark (you have a flashlight), this can be difficult for some people who don't have the skills to handle it. Unlike the original Doom and Quake games, you don't slaughter waves and waves of mindless minions, charging in blindly. If you try that with Doom 3, they will use organized tactics to hand you your ass as a hat.

This game got a lot of press when it was new. Dark, creepy, it marked a resurgence of horror FPS games and pressed the boundaries of the hardware of the day.
As of Dec 2007, however, it doesn't do that any longer and there's darker, creepier, better written games out there. As we enter 2008, 8PM on a Thursday night, there are only ~10 people on all the servers that my copy found tonight. Doom3 might have a lot to be said for it in multiplayer mode, if people were still playing it, but they're not.
If you're toying with buying this game today, buy it as a single player FPS, and buy it cheap. Half-Life2, Prey, and a half dozen other, better written, FPSes are available in the same 15-25 dollar price range. If you can find this game under $20 and have a deep love of id Games, go for it. If you'd rather just find a good single-player game, blow that $20 on something more compelling.
