Buy Gears of War

There's a myriad of other great reviews for this game, but I thought I'd add my two cents. The only reason(s) not to own this game is if you're under the age of 13, you can't handle violence, you don't own an Xbox 360, your thumbs have been severed, or you're mentally retarded.

The Graphics are fantastic. The Gameplay is fluid and phenominal. The Story Line is short but great, and for some reason replaying this game over and over again is like popping in your favorite movie; it never gets old. This game has redefined FPSs/3rd person shooters forever.

If you have a 360, and you don't own this game, then you need to buy this game right now. Just stop what you're doing, and buy it. Without a doubt, and I don't say this lightly, this game is by far one of the top 5 action games ever. It's an instant classic. It's right up there with games like Call of Duty, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, and even good ol' Contra.

Just wow

This game is insane. The first time I picked up my controller to play it I was with my friend who was spending the night. His brothers friend let him borrow the game so we could play it. Unfortunately this friend wrecked the disk so we could only play the first act before my 360 froze, but still. We played it on Hardcore the first time we played it. It was awesome. As frustrating as it can be when your teammate is bleeding out and you can't get to him, it is still a great game. I am still on the first act (recently got the game for Chirstmas) because i have been playing Rock Band, Harry Potter 5, Halo 3 online and Assassins Creed. (all games i suggest) but it is an amazing game. I can't say much for it though as i haven't playing past Act 1. But it is a fun game. But if you are easily scared or do not like seeing blood or hearing STRONG language constantly, than don't get this game. It is VERY grueling and gory. And alot of swearing periodically. Otherwise it is a great game.

Bought this for my nephew who loved it along with the 2 other boys who spent hours playing.

There's nothing casual about it

I have to admit, when I first played this game I didn't care for it. It seemed way too difficult for me. After getting killed three times in a row on the first level I gave up on it. It was Christmas time after all, and I was had other games to play plus my old favorite Oblivion that I keep going back to. (Yes, I must slip Oblivion into every review for an Xbox 360 game) But later, when I heard people talk about how much they enjoyed it and read reviews about it on Amazon I decided to give it another go. I read faqs about how to play better and my skills started to improve. I began to better grasp the concept of cover, when to stay behind it and when to sally forth and kick some alien(?) butt. I started to actually get perfect active reloads.(That flashing bar when you get a perfect reload is quite satisfying. It almost makes up for the fact that half the time when you finally get a chance to shoot something your temporary damage bonus is gone) I persisted through the choke points where I wasn't entirely sure how to proceed.(In a fluid game like this strategy guides only help so much) Even though I died (and got chunked) enough times to fill up a national cemetary I finally beat the game andit was one of the most fulfilling moments of my video game playing days.

Why bore you with my life story(of this game). It's basically a long intro for the theme of this review as stated in the title. This game ain't easy. Although I won't give it the satisfaction of putting it in the all time hall of hard games (Battletoads, ghosts and goblins anyone?) it still is a wake up call to die so many times before you even see your first boss. A game like this isn't some fun diversion you tune onto just before bed. You play this game sitting straight, hands clenching the controller tight. This game requires commitment, this game requires dedication. This game requires you to, I don't know, not suck at shooting games I guess would help. This game is funner with two people playing. Why exactly is it that you can resuscitate your computer allies but they can't heal you? The good thing about this game is that it makes 'health hunting' irrelevant. Instead of a health meter or bar you have an emblem that glows red when you get hit. Your character is pretty slow, he can run but it is kind of wonky and hard to control. All in all this is a good game. It is a bit hardcore, even when it's not, ie casual. But that makes beating it even more worthwhile.

A 360 Must-Have

This game is on a need to own basis. If you own the Xbox 360, Gears of War will be your new best friend. The incredible online fast paced action, is smoothly accompanied by beautiful graphics and superb level design. Some might say this game has many online bugs, but the January 10th patch is said to clean up all the rough edges found in Gears of War. So don't let that bring you back from buying this game. It's fun, addictive, and very popular. If I can't convince you to buy this game, maybe peer pressure will knock you into right senses.

this is an highly overrated game, graphic is fantastic but gameplay is monotonous. Online is soso, i prefer counterstrike, if you are really looking for a great online multiplayers FPS, go for counterstrike, and others, there are much more games better then GOW...

Last word, RENT IT, DON'T BUY IT. NOT WORTH IT.

Gears of War Game of the year or not?

First off, i really wanted this game to be my favorite action/3rd person shooter on the xbox 360, but the game turned out not to be and i will tell you why.

First off let me tell you the great things about this game:
-This game very good graphics and a very smooth framerate considering the high amount of graphics that was used.
-The game has two unique weapons, which are the chainsaw gun and the spike grenade.
-the game has a good cover system.

Now on to why i don't think it deserves all the praise it has received:
-a crappy story, i'm used to great 3rd person games such as Resident Evil 4, gta san andreas, Splinter cell double agent etc... and this game has one of the most-overused sci-fi stories ever. and i'm a person who likes a good story in a game and this definately doesn't have much of one.
-this game is extremely repetive, nothing new really in terms of gameplay except the cover system.
-Your squad AI is made up of retards.
the game IS WAY TO SHORT, i'm talking $60 for like 7 hours of gameplay, what a rip-off.
-this game stole a lot of its ideas from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, so that was pretty lame.
-this game is WAY TO LINEAR!!
-this game is a ripoff of the genre that includes such great titles as Resident Evil 4 and Half-life 2.

I could go on and on, now i love my 360, but this game is definately not as great as people make it out to be. I thought this game would be more creative, yet the only stuff that it really accomplished are that it has good graphics, good framerate, cool bosses and two unique weapons, other than that it is not that great. Now don't get me wrong i enjoyed playing it, but i can only recommend this game as a rental. to all the sci-fi fans i would recommend you wait and pick up Bioshock and Mass Effect when they come out. Thank You for your time.

Reviews gave me high expectations... :(

I heard so much about this game but I don't see what people like in it. There might be some nice pre-game videos but the game play is slow and repetitive. You're this slow moving character that mows down ghastly creatures with your never-ending-ammo machine gun. That's it folks. It's a remake of the old computer game Doom. But some people will pay $60 for that. It's all about taste.

The online game play is just as slow.

And what's up with you being able to revive your teammates but they can't revive you?

Too Violent

This could have been a great game but it just places too much emphasis on gore. I don't really need a chainsaw weapon to have fun and the gore really ruins the fun of this game. This could have been the next Halo but the designers lost their way when they pandered to the small percentage of gamers who feel they need graphic violence to have fun.

I recently got an XBOX 360 and have been blown away by how cool it is seeing that the last video game system I owned was a Super Nintendo. I rented Call of Duty 4 (awesome), Bought Orange Box(#1 so far) Bioshock (good, but you're glad when you're finally done, and Halo 3 (also pretty impressive.
Okay, so I read all of the hype about how awesome Gears of War is so I bought it. IT SUCKS!!! The movement is not fluid, it is repetitive, yes the guy does take up half the screen. All you are doing is going from room to room, alley to alley that all look the same with the same enemy scenario. I am no pro at video games, I've played all of the above on normal. This I am playing on the easiest mode and it is still freaking hard. Plus when you die you have to go back too far. Often the reload is at the beginning of one of the computer generated conversations. ANNOYING! Yeah, I tried and tried to get into this game but I just can't. I will be selling it the next time I get some free time. My advice is to save your money.
