Well, after playing GoW for about an hour, I have to say this game SUCKS! Where can I start? First of all, I failed to mention above the reason why I only played an hour: I nodded off and awoke with slobber running down my chin...
Here's an unbiased overview of the game and its inner workings:
Stunning Graphics? Well if you like monotones, I guess, The characters were not what I would call vivid or realistic; environments definitely did not look like real environments. In addition on my set I had a squashed aspect ratio that made the game just look crappy.
No health meter; This is simple, I've been playing FPS's for years, it appears this games developer is on an island, and totally forgot to include one. Somebody send a rescue helicopter to get these guys and bring them back to reality!
A.I. problems: Well to make a long story short, these guys are stupid, they die constantly (Dom comes to mind), or should I call him Dumb? Seems to fit better!
Controls -- you knew I was getting to that didn't you? Well wait no more, the controls in this game suck, I had to keep zooming in to really do any damage to enemies, which left me vulnerable to attacks. Of course with no health meter, you know where I'm going right? One word sum up: SUCKS.
The overall game seems to be tailored to the kiddies, it seems like a very kid oriented game. I would recommend this to parents looking for a game to keep the kiddies giggling for hours, but not for the serious mature gamer.
Well, going back to me nodding off, it was some good sleep, if you're looking for an alternative to sleeping pills, look no further and purchase this game.
If your looking for a compelling, FPS, check out some really good games like Resident Evil 4 or Resistance: Fall of Man.

there are so many reviews here that people probably will skip this review. What's more is that the game's been around for long enough that no one looks at reviews of it anymore. I've played Gears at a friend's house many times on co-op. We beat the game. He loved it, but I really didn't find anything extraordinary. It was VERY hard. no casual gamer will be able to pick up and play immediately. the cover system was pretty smooth, although my character would sometimes roll towards the enemies rather than duck behind a car I told him to move behind. Your default rifle is pretty weak. It takes longer than it should to take down an enemy with it. The chainsaw is pretty cool at first, but after a few uses you realize that it's the same animation. I would have liked to have seen other ways to chainsaw your enemy. however, don't use it unless your enemy is very close because your character is annoyingly slow.
yet another overrated game
The godfather thus far reigns number one for XBOX 360

Gears of war is entertaining for a while, afterwards, it gets old and tiring. One of this games' biggest flaws (and others) is the controlling and handling of the gun and character. It's a task to aim and discharge your weapon, neither does it have an bull's eye to direct your weapon to shoot. I suppose this game and 'Call of Duty' could've been better made for the people whom just want to play it for a hour or so. It's just too technical.....
*On the plus side, the only superb quality of this game is it's graphics.
Overall I rate this game a 3.5 = B
All flash and barley any substance..

Gears of War pits you as Marcus Fenix - a soldier who was sentenced to jail time for deserting his position in order to save his father during a time of crisis - as he and the Delta Team attempt to find Alpha Team, their "secret weapon" that will apparently win the war, and take down an invading army of freaks known as the Locust.
Its your basic third person shooter here meaning you get a bunch of weapons such as 2 types of machine guns, a shotgun, rocket launcher, etc. You can dive any direction you want, go toe-to-toe with the Locust in melee combat (in fact on the human machine gun there is a chainsaw that you can saw your enemies in half with), throw grenades, and so fourth. You'll be pressing buttons, kicking doors open, and commanding your team just like in Brute Force for the X-Box. Also, if you blow out your enemies legs then you can stomp on their head and watch it explode under your boot.... very fun.
However, G.o.W relies HEAVILY on what games like kill.switch & Winback have done in the past: taking cover behind any object, popping off a few rounds at the Locust, and hiding behind your cover as the enemy returns fire. You'll be doing this throughout the entire game, and although it is fun its just like what happened with the previously mentioned titles - it gets repetitive.
The Locust are an interesting bunch of freaks character design wise. There are these big guys named Boomers who have rocket launchers, there are these things called Wretches that run on their hands and feet, the basic grunt of the army called Grubs, and so on. They are well created and definitley worth checking out.
What makes this game really shine, to me at least, is it's online play. You and a friend (or random person that may join) can play the entire campaign co-operatively which was definitely a good thing to include. There is also your typical online versus games like deathmatch, team deathmatch, and a game of "kill the leader" where if the leader of either the Gears or Locust dies then the opposing team earns a point. In the versus mode you can also choose your character such as Marcus, Baird, Cole, and Dom as well as some of the Locust characters. However the death match portion's fun is obliterated by EXTREMELY weak weapons, the levels are lame & predictable, and when you die you have to press A numerous times so you don't bleed out... thats so lame and its not even worth the aggravation,
If your interested in those X-Box 360 achievement things then you'll be happy to know there are quite a list of things you can earn although alot of them are earned simply by playing the campaign.
Moving forward with this review, the graphics are breathtaking. The enviroments are massive and extremley detailed with an authentic and realistic feel, though decently linear. It truley shows what the 360 can handle and is easily one of (if not the) best looking games ever created. What bothers me about the graphics is how massivley big & bulky each character looks and how there isn't a big variety of colors used (its mainly like black, grey, yellow and white). They are so ridiculous looking that its hard to connect with anyone on Delta, or really anyone for that matter.
On the subject of big and bulky, your guys are so huge that lets say you wanna crouch behind a somewhat small boulder, you are most likley going to get hit because a piece of you will be sticking out. You get what I'm saying? And they literally THROW themselves against cover..its amusing.
The music is alright, and the voice acting is pretty good but the sound effects are kind of cruddy. The freaks sound terrifying with their native tongue while the Delta squad have this rough-n-tough voices with some funny dialog thrown in for good measure. The guns are very weak and sound it too which is really a shame. The explosions, however, sound very satisfying and real.
Sadly, you'll probably have Gears of War beat within maybe 5-6 hours and the ending isn't even worth it: Marcus & Dom kill General Ramm, Marcus sets off the Lightmass Bomb and hops onto a helicopter with Dom and the rest of the squad, Lightmass Bomb blows up Locust base. Thats it, and thats lame.
To sum it up though, even though this game has been in development for like 2 years and delivers excellent graphics this game isn't worth $60. Quite possibly the easiest game to say "rent it first" to.
This game rocks!

If you are a FPS fan...welcome to the current Holy Grail. This is quite simply the best game of its type bar none. Fabulous graphics with well rendered scenery combine with a great story to immurse you into what is the closest thing to an interactive movie experience currently available. Videos and story scripting are so well crafted that you sometimes almost forget you are playing a game. Clearly, this is what Starship Troopers should have been with a little essence of Aliens and Doom mixed in for good measure. The weaponry is amazing, with your primary piece being a cross between the Aliens pulse rifle with an...I love this...attached large toothed chain saw device for close combat. Kudos to whoever was responsible for that one. The only bad aspect about this game will be you inability to put it down. New control features are lifelike and enjoyable. No more spending your time looking for health laying about. Just mind your damage meter (yes, there is one) and duck behind cover for a short while to heal yourself. Extremely fun as a co-op game, you'll need to cover each other's backs through the intense levels. Through most of the game you are part of a squad of four soldiers and whether you are playing co-op or solo, your two or three AI teamates perform in a smart and realistic way unlike anything seen before...to an extent that you will find yourself almost forgetting that they are AI all together. And as if all this weren't enough, GOW is the first installment of a trilogy. HOOOAH!
Good with the potential of being great

Gotta say this game was good but it could have been great.
1.) Way too short! It's only five levels. If you felt frustration at Halo 2, get ready for deja vu!
2.) The story line needs to be a little more clear. A cinematic at the begining of the single player mode would be great. Instead you have to wait at the start screen in order to get the back story, and that's the same one we've seen in game trailers.
3.) A couple of glitches like the freezing of your character if you move while chainsawing. That's an easy remedy with a patch that can be put out over XBox Live.
4.) The multiplayer could use a couple more modes (i.e. Capture the Flag, etc.) and only 8 online multiplayer maps. I don't feel like shelling out a bunch of cash to download new maps.
All in all though the game was good but the rush to get it out in time for the holidays might have stunted this title.

When you play the two games you come to realize how low Gears of War is compared to the pontential of Resistance. I play Gears of War the day it was release day. Sure, the game was okay. I did enjoy the Co-op. But the gameplay and multiplayer doesn't even match the capacity of Resistance fall of man. 40 players vs 8 players online? Come on that's weak. I personally just finish the game and was in line friday getting my PS3.
Gears of War is too short. If you don't duck and cover you die pretty quick. That's just weak for a FPS. The games glitches are bad.
This is really bad for M$. Don't be fooled by the hype behind Gears of War.
