Releif!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

A great way to vent after a long day of annoying people. Just run around and slash, stab, shot, blow-up, dismantle, and kill as many zombies as your heart desires. If you want, you can even name them after your boss... just before cutting him in half with a chainsaw. A GREAT stress relief!

Strictly For The Hardcore

Let me first start off by saying that this game is, as mentioned in the title for my review, strictly for those of us who consider ourselves "hardcore" gamers. Capcom did a great job on their first game for the xbox360 and it's also one of the toughest games that you'll find on the system, much like Capcom's other great 360 game-Lost Planet.
Capcom, as a publuisher and developer, has always made games less geared toward the casual gaming market and Dead Rising is sure to be included among these ranks. Set inside a shopping mall in a 72-hour period (not real time-every minute equates to roughly 1 second), you play as photojournalist Frank West and are given the dual task of solving the mystery as to why this small town in Colorado is infected with zombies, and also finding as many survivors as you can and whisking them away to safety.
The fun in the game comes in that there are literally thousands of zombies infesting this mall, and also hundreds of implements of destruction to take them out with. Lawnmowers, chainsaws, battle axes, broadswords, a multitude of firearms, bats, skateboards, guitars, etc., etc. I could go on and on and list as many weapons I could think of that are at your disposal in Dead Rising but it would probably take up all the space I'd have for this review.
For all the fun this game offers however, it is not without its share of problems. First of all, the graphics are fantastic for one of the first of the second wave of xbox360 titles. With all this effort put into making the game look great, it is a complete mystery to me as to why the in-game text is so small. Unless you sit within 5 feet of the TV, I can guarantee that you'll have a hard time making out some of the text on screen. This stays constant whether you play in HD or normal TV modes.
Second, since you are tasked with rescuing as many survivors as possible, the game places a huge amount of importance on keeping them alive. This would be fine, except for the fact that the escorting mechanic is unbalanced and very problematic. For instance, many female survivors are only allowed to be escorted by hand, but this mechanic is very difficult and not nearly as easy as escorting the female survivors which you can carry, piggyback style. Also, the male survivors follow you on foot and can be given weapons (to be fair, both sexes of survivors can be given weapons but since you have the ability to escort females by hand or by piggyback, it makes no since to let them follow on foot since this is the worst of the escort methods) but their AI is terrible and they'll either swing at air, allow themselves to be swarmed with zombies, or simply run into walls and objects and slow you down.
Seeing as how the escorting of survivors is such a huge part of the game, it can be VERY frustrating to continue to deal with these limitations later on in the game as the difficulty ramps up.
The story for the game is your typical zombie fare-derived from george romero, despite the disclaimer on the box. Zombies are the aftereffect of a society gone wrong, blah, blah, blah. Biochemical weapons, overpowered military, blah, blah, blah. Nothing new here.
So, despite the games few faults, there is much fun to be had here, just understand that the game follows many of the old school hardcore video game tennants, such as super high difficulty and unforgiving gameplay. If you can stomach it, get your zombie on.

Seriously good game with serious flaws

Overall this game is good, and I will probably buy it as a result. The shortcomings are pretty awful, though. That's why it only gets 3 stars.

Cons:
* The save system is awful. It almost singlehandedly ruins the game. You die (which is very easy to do) and you lose all the progress since the last time you accessed some very inconvenient save point that takes 15 minutes to get back to.
* You can only have one save game, so it is very easy to save and then not be able to complete the story mission without starting over... I just ran into that. Without being psychic and knowing what the upcoming missions will require you to do, it is hard to know if you are saving yourself into a corner or not. Expect to have to start over a few times.
* A character in the game, Otis, calls you constantly, like some jealous girlfriend, and you have to drop whatever you are carrying to answer the phone (seriously... you can't answer the phone when your hands are full). If you don't answer he'll just keep calling back, forever. He usually wants to chat in the middle of boss battles or when you are surrounded by zombies. I'm really hoping Otis dies in this game. Or that I can at least get a restraining order against him.
* The game starts out hard. It gets easier as you advance... which is the exact opposite of what you would expect in a game. You have very poor stats and very limited inventory space, which means you run out of weapons and food very quickly. You have very little life so you can easily be killed by zombies if they grab hold of you. You are very slow, have no skills, and have weak attack power, so it is easy to get overwhelmed by zombies.

Pros:
* The only good thing about the save system is that you can save after you die (which really just deletes your saved game), start over and keep the level you attained. If it wasn't for that feature, this would be a 1 star game and it would have gone back already.
* Zombies... lots of them... masses of dumb zombies, just like I would expect.
* The weapons are brilliant. There's quite a bit of variety and some are pretty clever. One boss that I was unprepared for, I killed with pop cans. Seriously. It is also smart that the weapons break very frequently, which forces you to use weapons you wouldn't otherwise use. I wouldn't choose a chair or a cash register to beat zombies over the head with, but if I'm surrounded and my last weapon breaks, I don't have much choice.
* The food creation system is very well done. The things you can make with the food creation system really make a difference in the game. And who wouldn't want to drink a smoothie made from a slice of pizza and a bottle of wine?
* The photo system is somewhat unique and interesting.

Overall a good game with some serious, almost game-breaking flaws. Hopefully they will come up with a sequel that fixes those problems. That could be a 5 star game.

Fun game but gets old to fast, and has to many problems.

This game is awesome at first because you can kill zombies with almost about anything you want but it gets old to fast because you have to survive 72 hrs. It also suffers from screen text being to small and cellphone calls disable you from attacking or jumping, plus if you get hit while talking the guy makes you listen to the entire convo all over again. I hope the wii version fixes these problems.

it's good at first...

as mentioned, the game gets old fast, killing zombie after zombie is repetitive after awhile and some of the "bosses" are really difficult at first and i don't understand the purpose of having bosses really since its a free roaming game - the amount of bullets i had to use to kill the guy in the supermarket was ridiculous...to see the A ending and "continue" into OT (I won't ruin it for you but I didnt know the first time and missed out on it) you must complete all the cases and make it in time for the helicopter - remember that

Absolutely Horrible

This was without doubt, the most aggrivating game. I have never returned a game in my life and this will probably be my first. Life bars are pointless, because half the time you get attacked, it is fatal. You just have to sit there and watch yourself die no matter how much life u have nor how fast u try and hit the buttons. The text is so small on the screen, that if you don't have an HDTV and a magnifying glass, don't even bother trying to read it. A very dissapointing game from capcom. Shame on you.

You can free roam but.............

The save system is crap in the game. Trying to make it to a bathroom at night time to save is a pain. There is a way to just roam through the game doing what you want but it comes at a price. If you don't complete your main missions you will get a message that you cant find out the story in the game. That's the bad part, but you do get to choose to continue on in the game. I'm guessing you continue until the 3rd day and then you get back on the helicopter. So if your not interested in solving the mystery of the game then you can freely roam with no time constraints. I think if you miss the helicopter then you stay in the mall until you die.

Dead Rising is an awesome Next-Gen game for the Xbox 360!

Dead Rising is by far the best game on the Xbox 360 to date. There have been many compliants about the save system in the game, but it is really not that bad. If you played the Resident Evil series, it is very similar to them.

If you like zombies, dawn of the dead, and using over 250 objects to kill them, you should get this game.

Zombie Killing Time!

This game is great, it's not just killing zombies, there is a plot, people to rescue, things to find, etc... There is no way you can do everything the first time through and you will want to solve everything. Get this game and have fun, one of the best for the Xbox 360.

Short Game - Replayability High

The only reason I give this game 4 stars and not 5 is that the game is relatively short. However, with so many different features it doesn't matter. I'm currently on my 3rd time through the game and it's still a blast.

So many options for weapons, so many skills to gain from levels. There's numerous ways to kill zombies. Skills such as the face crusher, disembowel, and the suplex never get old.

This is a must for 360 owners.
