This a pretty good rpg for the ps1 which has a very in depth story line and has a nice fighting system. Overall I give this game five stars

It was good in 1998, it's still good 10 years later.

I loved this game back when it came out. Very unique RPG and Aya Brea is the hottest RPG character ever. The setting was awesome (New York coool!) and the story was good too. It's science-fiction but it's not too intelectual (sp?) I bought this game because I lost it a long time ago and yes, this game still rocks. Way better than the 2nd one which is a Resident Evil rip-off.

A FANTASTIC HORROR-RPG! 9.5 OUT OF 10

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Resident Evil and Final Fantasy had a baby? If so, the answer is Parasite Eve. The story is about an NYPD cop named Aya Brea, whose life gets turned upside down during a visit to a theater. She goes to see an opera with her boyfriend, and all seems to be going well, the singer; Melissa; has a beautiful voice and everything is running perfectly until people start to self-combust (catch fire by themselves). Only Aya miraculously survives and Eve has mysteriously disappeared, so you must go find her, and as a dutiful police officer, arrest her. Then wierd things start happening in the dressing room area. A rat suddenly appears, and then it begins squealing uncontrollably as it begins to mutate into a grotesque abomination (Remember the scene in The Thing when the dog changed into the alien? Yeah, it was that disgusting.) Then it turns out Melissa is a horrible monster called Eve, who can spawn creatures called Neo-Mitochondria. As the game explains it, this particular parasite makes the mitochondria in the cells gain more energy than the cell itself causing the body to get really hot and make it catch on fire by itself or turn into a gel substance. There is a more detailed explanation in the game, but I gave you the shorter version. Then you begin to have strange visions from your past that you'd long forgotten for good reasons. This is only the beginning of the game, you face even more dangerous and freakier creatures later. This game is ultimately a quest to destroy Eve, save the world, wipe out the Neo-Mitochondria creatures, and discover the secrets of your past. This game has incredible CG-animated cutscenes that are very impressive, even to this day. The in-game graphics of the environments are incredible as well, but the character models look ugly in real-time. The gameplay is a mix of turn-based and real-time combat, what I mean is, on this game you wait your turn to attack but you can move around. Unfortunately, this can also hamper the experience in some ways because the enemies move around too, and sometimes the space you're enclosed in is too small for you to really avoid being hit. Luckily, this rarely dampers the experience because this game is absolutely incredible with its creepy Resident Evil-style creatures and atmosphere, phenomenal CG-animation, cool gameplay, storyline, cool bosses, and challenging gameplay. If you like RPGs and you like Resident Evil this game is a must-have because it's so awesome. I love this game, and there's no reason any RPG fan should hate it.

Parasite Eve

I loved Parasite Eve 2 so much I bought the original off Amazon. I am in Australia so unfortunately the games format is NTSC and Australia is PAL - so it views black and white on my Playstation, but the game is still great. (I did buy it knowing NTSC might not work on my playstation but it was worth the risk I felt - I just wanted to play it so much!). I think the Parasite Eve games are just great. So full of action and hard but not so hard that you give up and never play them again. These ones you go back for the challenge and finally conquer! There are the split endings too which makes you want to get the perfect ending. Enjoy.

Judith Siirila's voice is amazing.

The music in this game is the best I've heard, for -any- video game. Judith Siirila's voice is absolutely amazing, and the storyline is great too. It's got a weird feel to it, but I really enjoyed it.

A wonderful game that will be played for years to come but...

Parasite Eve is, without a doubt in my mind, one of the many great games for Playstation. It's an RPG game mixed with a bit of sci-fi action.

Now, as I'm looking through these reviews, I can't believe some of them. Some people beat 1/5 of the game and thinks that qualifies them to write a review. It doesn't. One review I read said the guy hated it but didn't finish the game and another guy wrote a review only to ask for help on a boss fight...? You really should finish the game and then write a review.

Anyway, back to business. The year is 1997 and it's Christmas Eve. You play as Aya Brea, a 25-year-old NYPD cop who just arrived at Carnegie Hall (which is featuring an opera) with her boyfriend. The show is a disaster from the start. No, the actors didn't forget their lines. It was something more - serious. When the lead singer (who we believe is Melissa Pearce at first) starts her solo, everyone in the audience bursts into flames, except Aya and her date. When everyone in the theater is pretty much dead, Aya whips out her pistol and confronts the actress who identifies herself as "Eve."

To make up for the relatively short game, the producers put in an ex-game, which is only available after completing the normal game at least once. The ex-game is the same as the normal game except you gain entrance to the Chrysler Building. In there, you have to climb 77 floors and encounter a boss every 10 floors. During your climb, you gain items that are not available in the normal game and you get more powerful weapons and armor. On the 77th floor, the final boss awaits you. Defeating it will unlock the second ending to Parasite Eve.

I don't want to spoil the game for people. This game is one of the first games I've played on Playstation and I loved it right away. I do believe that this game will be played by many gamers for years to come but when I played it and beat the game, I was still confused by a few parts of the game. Maybe this is just me but I had to rent the 1997 Parasite Eve film (which covers the Japan incident as mentioned by Maeda) and that helped me answer my questions. I believe that a video game should answer all of the gamer's questions and that someone should not have to refer to a film to get those questions answered, which is why the 4/5 stars for the overall rating. But still, this game is fascinating and I highly recommend it. 5/5 for fun and 4/5 overall.

My RPG Exception

I've never been a fan of RPGs. My introduction to the RPG world was a Final Fantasy and it had me screaming as I waited for the enemy to make his move and kick my ass. But Parasite Eve is an exception.

I first played PE2 and, as a survival horror style game, it was pretty good and left me wanting the whole story.

PE is amazing. I was completely engrossed by the story line of mitochondria rapidly evolving. I kind of liked how I could upgrade weapons and powers, standard RPG stuff I guess. What really had me hooked on this game was that it had survival horror elements and was NOT a stupid turn based magic battle. The graphics are good, it's PSX, so unless you're some next-gen moron raving graphics are god, you wont be disappointed.

The only downsides to PE is that everyone walks with a stick up their... as in Resident Evil. Meh, no biggie. Oh, but those annoying magically appearing monsters. How I hate you. It becomes annoying very quickly when you just "cleared" a room, return, and a 20 foot monster and his posse materialize themselves out of thin air.

As for sound: Music was decent. I'm a big Silent Hill fan so this was a big step down for me. The opera music was atmospheric but everything else was just average.

This is a game where the pros b**** slap the cons and give birth to a classic. If you like survival horrors, and I guess RPGs also, don't skip on this CINEMATIC GAME MASTERPIECE(a lot of people miss out on the fact this is a game that plays out like a movie).

Oh, P.S.: WHERE THE HELL IS THE REMAKE FOR THIS, SQUARE?! DON'T ALLOW THIS GAME TO BE FORGOTTEN WITH OTHER PSX CLASSICS. AT LEAST SELL THE F-KING RIGHTS TO KONAMI. TEAM SILENT WOULD TREAT THIS BABY RIGHT.

The four M's of PE: Melting, Mutation, Mass-Immolation, and Mitochondria!

Alright, I admit it. I'm 12. BUT, I can handle things like this game. I don't regard it as highly as i did when I was 5-7 years old, but I still love it. Yet somehow, I'm appalled. Its grotesque appearance and people spontaneously combusting may sound horrible, but once you know the story, it gets far better that you ever expected. The FMV sequences are astounding, it is favorably disturbing, it has the most intricate storyline I have ever seen (polar opposite of Quake 2!), AND it is extremely better than it's sequel. I'm glad I own it! Oh, and don't forget:

Parasite Eve was my first game for my PS1 system and I do not, in any way, regret getting this awesome game! Yes, the game is short, but there's still the ex-game to play (which is no different other than you get to visit the Chrysler Building and try to unlock the second ending). My favorite thing about this game are the awesome MVP's of animals changing into mutant monsters. This game is a must-buy for all Playstation gamers! This game gets 5 *S*T*A*R*S!
