Good, solid game

I rented Parasite Eve to give it a try and to be honest, I didn't expect much. I figured it would be the same old, run of the mill RPG but I was pleasantly surprised. With a unique story line and great mutated foes, I found myself quickly sucked into this game. The story line is creative and interesting...enough for even experienced RPG'ers to appreciate. The games overall mechanics in terms of battle sequences and general movement are smooth and fluid. The main flaw with this game is that there isn't enough of it. The game moves along at a quick pace and before you know it, it's over. Still, I highly recommend this game for nearly everyone, although the gross-out factor may be relatively high for kids under 13...lots of blood and guts. Take advantage of the great deal currently offered by Amazon, trust me, you won't be disappointed.

It was scary!! 0.o

I thought it was pretty good. It has catchy music and great graphics. But one other thing, IT WAS SCARY!!!! When she would be walking in the opera house(which I stayed in forever cuz I like to walk around in there)she'd turn a corner and then all of the sudden you hear the heartbeat and suddenly some rat mutates into a thingamajigger. Scary! But it's good, buy it!

Short, but good.

Pasite Eve is a great game that delivers one great action packed story, beginning to end. You play as a detective named Aya Brea, who lost her mother and younger sister at a young age. In the game you get powerfull weapons that you can combine together to get even a more powerful weapon! You also get great spells as you level up!

The controls are very easy, Final Fantasy style. The movies in the game are fantastic, very realistic. Plus the puzzles, clues, and suspision of what you think will happen next, is great! The drawback of this game is that it is short. It doesn't take long to beat the game, but you do get secret modes, and weapons which make up for the shortness of the game. If you like action styled rpg games then this game is for you! Try it!

One kick-ass RPG of a different class altogether!

From watching the review alone, I knew this title would really kick some butt... dubbed "cinematic rpg" by Squaresoft, it features real smooth story telling incorporating a lot of movie scenes with top notch graphics, impressing the hell out of you. It also has innovative battle system where you move freely about the screen and battle enemies, a fully-customizable weapon/armor upgrade system, and a ton of varieties in weapon and very ingenious "magic" at your disposal, also. Since this story was actually derived from a japanese sci-fi novel, story is perhaps the most impressive as it delves deeply into molecular science and successfully ties it together to lead the gamers right into the world of P.E. Replay value is pretty high since there is another game mode that becomes available after you beat it once, and upgrading weapon alone has a lot of replay value because you can fully customize your weapons to have different effects! (for example, i made my granade launcher have longer range, freeze effect, tranquilizer effect, and acid effect... how cool is that?) anyway, it is a MUST HAVE if you are a RPG fan... esp. square RPG. Highly recommended.

An excellent, if short, game

I'm a big rpg fan, and have been playing them ever since I can remember. Parasite Eve is an excellent, well designed game, but it does have its shortcomings, especially when compared to the "mainstream" rpgs like the Final Fantasy series.

Your protagonist is Aya, a policewoman who starts the game by going to an opera show. During the solo singing part from a mysterious girl, the entire audience spontaneously combusts...except for Aya. You proceed to unravel the mystery of this girl, the power she has, and her connection to Aya. It's an original, if simplistic, plotline that flows pretty well.

Graphics are nothing spectacular, but granted it is a psx game. Sound is more ambient than anything else. No fast-paced battle music.

The combat system is an important part of rpgs. Unlike most games, you only control a single character(there is no "party" of characters in this game). She can walk freely during the entire battle while her attack meter builds up to maximum, then she can take an action, whether it be attacking, using an item, or "magic"(well not really magic, but it's the best description I can give without spoilers). Then you proceed to run around an dodge enemy attacks while waiting for your attack meter to reach maximum again. A tad repetitive. Or it would be if the game was longer than 15 hours(unless you want to try that massive 100 level secret area).

When you level up, you also get a bunch of points that you can spend. You can spend them directly on Aya and improve your base stats(or maximum inventory space to carry more healing items), or upgrade your weapons with them(kind of pointless since you get a lot of new weapons, at least in the beginning). Nifty system, but it doesn't make up for the shortcomings of the game.

Parasite Eve is evidence of how a game should be made. It is very well designed. However, it lacks the "fun" factor that other rpgs have. If you are looking for older rpgs to try, give Star Ocean 2 a look.

Not bad, but not great

This game has an interesting storyline, and some good cinematic sequences, but I was disappointed with certain aspects. For instance, you aren't able to bypass the cinematic scenes....this can be annoying when re-doing a level multiple times. Also, most of the dialog is read-only (rather than spoken on the soundtrack). For a game with it all, I'd suggest Metal Gear Solid as a far more superior game.

Very poor.

Too short, too easy, very boring, really. The storyline makes little sense and is rather inconsistant (to free the mitochondria... huh, really, bad attempt at bio sci-fi here), Aya is somewhat cool but pretty boring. The FMAs are almost all gratuitous, they very seldom have anything to do with actual story elements, and it seems Square relied only on that to sell the game. The graphic engine is good but poorly used: the pre-rendered backgrounds are no match for Resident Evil 2. If you want a good RPG, get Xenogears or Final Fantasy Tactics, but avoid this.

A great game for people with really long attention spans.

Not that believability should be integral to the success of a game, but all too often, I found myself shouting "that's a lie!" or "that violates laws of physics!" while playing this game. What annoyed me, I guess, is that the game tries to present a fictional tale as though it really could happen in today's world, dreaming up all sorts of metaphysics to support itself. (Intelligent atoms? Please!)

Despite a somewhat ludicrous plot, the game is fun to play, if you like laborious action or are easily entertained. The fight engine is well-designed, yet difficult to get acquainted with, menus are unintuitive (don't click the wrong button, or your gun vanishes forever!) and the protagonist runs like a pack mule on NyQuill. This, plus the fact that areas are vast, makes for a slow-paced game, wherein you can spend an hour merely trying to get your character to her next destination.

So if you're looking for a game that combines the plot of Resident Evil with the fight engine from Secret of Mana, and throws in (then magnifies) the flaws from both games, this is a must have. Otherwise, spend your money on something else. (Like a bike, a tennis racket, a pair of skis, a book, etc.)

Not worth the money or time

Although the game did not totally suck, I must say this title did not agree with me. The story was a let-down compared the other Square games. It was way too short, I finishied in about four or five days, not even sitting there on the couch for the whole time. The characters were boring and bland, so I had no feeling for them whatsoever. Then to top it off the story was not that much of a jewel either. I would not waste your money if I were you because this game does not feel like an RPG, it's almost a direct bite off RE. The only good thing was the FMVs

Parasite Eve is a cinematic RPG with great graphics and an unusual story that you don't come across everyday. Eve the evil sorceress gets pretty weird throughout the game. Okay, okay what's up with that title? Well my friend told me if I play this from 7am to 11pm you can beat it. He said that's how he beat it, so I tried it. He was right, so if you want an easy game with great eye candy and some weird enemies, Parasite Eve is for you.
