It seems that Squaresoft isn't the only one in the world pumping out excellent RPGs. Sony had spent a lot of time and money creating a masterpiece. Details? Well...for starters...the player will notice similarities to Final Fantasy VII-VIII(is that a problem?) The battle system is unique...using an original combo system that even throws in enemy counterattacks...and adding in the dragoon transformations put the icing on the cake. One more thing...the magic system thats used gives new meaning to the saying "less is more"...the less you use the magic...the more you appreciate it...I like it...adds to the reality that magic isn't exactly EVERYTHING in a game.
You almost really wanna love this game

The Legend of Dragoon was supposed to be the Playstation's last premier titles like Final Fantasy VII or Chrono Cross or even Xenogears. Unfortunately it was marred by an incredibly predictable plot, really bad dialogue and robotic voice acting. But it's one of those kind of games that you really want to admire if it wasn't for its faults and boy does this game have faults.
Story: There's a war going on and caught in the middle of it is Dart, a young warrior orphaned by something called the Black Monster. So Dart, his childhood friend Shana and an increasing number of friends have to battle evil to save the world yadda yadda.
Graphics: Keep in mind this is Playstation. That being said the in-game graphics look okay at times with certain environments looking nice at times but others look horribly bad. However where the game shines is its FMVs. That is the good ones, since some of them are literally looking at old manuscripts or images with a voice-over. Why they even bothered, I don't know.
Sound/Music: Fairly unimpressive. I forgot most of the tracks right away and like I said, the voice acting at times is incredibly stilted like they were worried of sounding too "emotional" during a recording.
Gameplay: Hm, well it's essentially the same as Final Fantasy games on the PSX, walk around screens, get into random encounters(that occur WAY too frequently). The only difference is that there's Additions that you can use. They're kind of like combos where you have to hit a button at the right time to get more hits. It's an okay system but work on your timing, otherwise it's gonna be terrible for you in the long run.
Is it a recommendable game? Hard to say. It's certainly a likable game at times but other times you feel like "ugh, why do I get this thing?" Best thing to do is just try it out and if it's bad, then sell it.

First of all, I have to say I don't understand why someone said that they could not play this on their PS2. I have a PS2 and this plays fine - just like every other PSX game. Anyway... this game is kind of bland. If you have NOTHING else to play than it's okay. It really recycles old story lines from other games and fighting styles, etc. For some reason, however, the plots and elements that I usually find fascinating in other games, here appear fairly boring. Maybe it's the way it's all drawn - more realisitic than fantasy - I'm not sure. It just doesn't grab my attention. The character control is really good though. And it's pretty easy to get the hang of things. It's just a little lackluster of all.

Thats exactly what this game is. I enjoyed the FF series, but don't you want something fresh? This game delivers it all. You will find yourself adicted to this game like no other. This is a must for RPGer's, and a perfect start for those who have never played an RPG. No other game comes close to doing what this game does, it stands head and shoulders above the rest. Every element that you could want is in this game, and it packs a major punch.
The masterpiece of mediocrity

I am sorry. There are so many rave reviews for Legend of Dragoon that I am forced to write yet another sobering one so you actually know what you're buying. And, no, I am not biased toward the Final Fantasy series. In fact, I've never played a minute of it.
Legend of Dragoon is a long, four-CD role-playing game made by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is accompinied with the company motto "created by a team of one hundred over the course of three years", probably aimed to impress.
Now, Legend of Dragoon (from now on referred to as LoD) isn't an awful game by any means. It's actually somewhat innovative. The problem with the game is that it is horribly restrictive, as if Sony was afraid to innovate too much and loose the target audience.
Take, for example, the turn-based combat system that various other reviewers tout as the greatest ever. Sony introduced a minor element of action to each character's turn in combat by allowing you to increase the number of strikes per attack with a well-timed press of a button. These combination attacks are called Additions. Each has its own name, damage multiplier, and the limit to the number of attacks. Sony went ahead and made it so EACH CHARACTER CAN ONLY PERFORM ONE TYPE OF ADDITION PER BATTLE, effectively doing away with any strategy you may have hoped to develop. In fact, these combos are actually standard attacks, since by failing to perform them all the way through will cause miserably little damage, in no way enough to kill the bosses. Whether this action element is good is up to you. I enjoyed the realism a bit, although to pull off some of the faster, longer, and more complex additions is quite hard.
This restrictiveness extends to other parts of the battle engine as well: too few magic spells (most of them attack spells in various elemental flavors) and a laughably small inventory are the major examples.
Although some of you are bound to disagree with me (why else would my reviews accumulate negative votes?), the music is unimpresive and low on melody. Likewise, the voice acting (in battle, not in FMV) ranges from uninspired to ludicrous. Although the voices fit in rather well, the translations are hideous (Flurry/Ferry of Styx comes in as the most rampant example).
The game's chief downfall is the hideous dialog which spoils an otherwise promising story. The characters spout off poor humor and awkward jokes at the most inappropriate moments, while the designated comic relief character is so amazingly annoying that I had trouble with keeping my Playstation on. Likewise, the characters are stereotypes: the short-tempered hero, the valiant knight, the mysterious dark lady, and the damsel in distress are just a sampling of the playable characters. The characters also seem utterly incapable of logical thought. At times hey brought me to tears with their "whatever happens is fine" attitudes. Example (not word for word): "Whoopie! We're sailing to the place where our chief nemesis went!" "I wonder why our enemy told us where he was going?" "Beats the heck out of me!" And so on and so forth to infinity and beyond.
The prerendered backgrounds are absolutely amazing (although the designers forgot that livelihood depends not only on photorealism but on movement as well), the very few FMVs being literally fantastic. Sadly, not too many FMVs ar what you might expect: most are "scroll across the mural in 2D" type.
The in-battle graphics are a step back, though. To accomodate the constant motion, almost everything looks blocky and low on polygons, especially the enemies (Crystal Golem and Wounded Bear being prime examples of low polygon counts). Your characters and the enemies are so far apart that it's very hard to orient the camer to see both sides of battle. The bakgrounds are low-detil and look washed-out, especiualy when compared to the rest of the game. Your enemies include a variety of rats, moles, bats, kiwi birds, tutles, and such. Somehow I didn't expect to fight forest animals on my "epic quest".
Sadly enough, this game is actually up to current standards in gaming. I can only name a few games that significantly raise the bar (and I won't name them for fear of angered fans). I can only tell you to give this game a try. If you are easily entertained by large explosions, sword-swinging characters, twenty-second-long magic spells, and muddled, simplistic chracter interaction, by all means, get this game right now.
Thumbs down for Legend of Dragoon

Legend of the Dragoon is an extreamly long and noweher near as interesting as the TV comericials make it seem. There are afew areas where the graphics shine. If your hoping for a role playing game that allows you to effect the story line, this is not it. The nost challanging part of this game is fighting a handfull of monsters (each of these battles takes a minium of 1/2 hour). This game pushes you though a horribly long story line, battel sequences are extrealy repetive, and travel between towns is poorly animated. I found the best part of this game is the attack additions. Spells and time spent as a dragoon is extreamly limited and the endinig is disapponting especially after playing for over 60 hours. My advice is save your money and keep looking, better games are out there.
you can't change the ending

Let me give you the basic facts. The graphics:okay. music:very repetitive*erm...however you spell it*. storyline:it's so unoriginal....completely takes a *fairy tale* base to it. Now, moving on. I couldn't get 'into' the characters!!!! That is vital in a video game... It's like, "Oh, he's a dragoon and now he's not" or "Time for Dart to go flirt with the girl*or vice versa*. It just doesn't have that magical feeling in it. AND it's so up-front and CORNY! The girls like always saying "It's been so long since I've seen you, Dart" or "I need to learn more about you, Dart" It is soooo blah. Get final fantasy 8 or 9 please!!!!
