Let me state the punch-line of my review. If you miss this, you will not understand and appreciate a critical step in the evolution of online gaming. This is THE team-oriented online action game. No game plays CTF like Tribes2.
I started playing video games when my parents brought home an Atari Pong machine in the early 70s. I've been keeping an eye on the gaming world over the years. Major addictions included Zork, Doom, Civilization, Unreal Tournament...
Sure, Q3A broke boundaries in the online gaming world, but UT took it much farther. Sure, Half Life mods such as Fortress and Counter Strike stand as standards for popularity, but I stuck with UT from the day it came out... until I opened Tribes2.
Yes, I totally ignored Tribes1. I wasn't impressed. Granted, Tribes2 might stand as one of the most notable commercial flops of the genre, when we look back on what could have been. Dynamix, owned by Sierra, was apparently forced to ship this about 6 months earlier than desired. And it initially showed. There was NO customer service and the game barely ran on a large portion of players in the initial wave built on a LOT of intense hype. Sadly, many folks turned their backs on this game due to the bugs, the hefty system requirements, and the lack of solo-artist addictive qualities. Heck, most Tribes2 players had to upgrade their computers just to play. In the end, Sierra closed Dynamix down...
But I can safely say that the Tribes-cult following is understandable. It takes wide-open futuristic team multi-play where it has never been before, with stunning landscapes. Likewise, the user-made mods and mapping community is as vigorous as any for its size. If you love CTF mode and yearn for the excitement that only playing intelligent, action-packed games in a team setting can provide... you MUST play Tribes2.
This sets a standard, in my opinion.
Sure, I still play a round of Counter Strike or Unreal Tournament from time to time.
Sure, the other games are more popular although Tribes still has a steady online community.
And I'll keep an eye out on all the major breakthrough FPS games. Yet, until another game can combine the action with this kind of team-oriented gameplay (Unreal2? Halo?), I'll keep coming back to Tribes2.
If you want to understand online action/team gaming, you won't get it until you see Tribes2 and enjoy playing a really quality match of CTF as CTF should be.
A veterans reveiw.

As I read the pros and cons to this game I laughed to myself. They are very correct. the single player sucks.
It takes many hours of grueling trial and error to understand combat in such a fast paced game. You die...many many times. The best thing to do for a beginner or "newbie" is find a battle with few players and ask around for help. Usually an experienced player will step forward and help you out. For reasons I don't understand people are very helpful.
The first kill is the first step in a stairwell of accomplishments. Maybe it was a snipe or a mortor shot. Or possible even a chaingun massacre. You feel proud and feel ready to go to an experienced player only site. You get ripped to pieces.
The best thing to do in actuall combat is stay moving...You are a target to your opponent, the faster you move and the smaller you are the better your chance for survival. On the other hand shooting while moving puts both you and your target in motion. So it can go both ways. The extream of sitting and throwing everything you have at your opponent(heavy armor) or running circles around him shooting very little when you feel you could hit him(light armor). What you want to do is find a point in between or at one of the extreams that suits you. I prefer light armor on my back, a sniper weapon in my hands and a wingman at my side.
If your lost in what I have said, buy the game...and then read this review again and laugh at how clear it has become.
Once you can kill others the gameplay can only get funner, you find relationships with other players and may even create a clan. Nothing feels better than standing over a charred mymridon laying down flak for a 8 man frontal assault. You gotta love it.
Hope to see you in battle...let me know if I helped you out.

This game is incredibly good! I was a bit skeptical at first, but after a few games, I was hooked. The game controls and strategy are a bit hard to pick up at first, but keep with it, it is *worth it*!
Online game play is smooth and stable through my cable modem. My system runs the game well. I have an AMD600mhz, 256megs ram, 64meg geforce2 agp video card.
Buy it, play it, love it!
The ONLY game I'll PLAY

I've been a gamer since Doom and Mechwarrior (1). However those 'types' of games pale in comparison to TRIBES 2. The game places emphasis on TEAM WORK. A player can't win a round of Capture the Flag, Siege, Capture and Hold without the cooperation of fellow team members. The vehicles, items and games objects are top of the line - self explainatory and down right simple. Game play is great even when playing solo (but I recomment going online and duking it out with other Tribes Junkies). To be honest with you, this game is not a game but a community by itself
a massive online game for 8.99

Tribes 2 is one of the best games I've played to date!
There are so many things you can do,there is not enough space
in this column to even scratch the surface.
For starters, you must have a good on-line connection, cable or DSl;too have the most fun with the game.
Though you can play off-line,to practice and hone your skills.
Video graphics are not demanding at all,so just about any video card should work.
There are about 10 different games to choose from, although my farvorite is "Siege". In Siege, you choose a player role, which you can switch at any time,by popping in a inventory station.
The object of the game is to completely destory your opponents ability to protect is flag, which is protected by force fields;by destroying the power sources (generators),then touch your opponents flag,to capture his base. All must be preformed in a limited time slot. Then roles are reversed.Beat the best time,to win that round.
How you choose to carry out this mission,is where the fun begins.
For example, you can select a "Asassin kit" from you inventory station, and choose the "Cloak pack",to have the abililty to be cloaked, and sneak into your oppponents base, and cause all types of mischief. Destory your opponents inventory stations,so he cannot repair his generators, once they are down.
Another example, with the same Asassin kit,is to choose a "depolyable camera kit". Then sneak into the opponents base, plant little cameras in key areas, sneak out, then select your "Command circuit HUD",and spy on the enemy,by watching the implanted cams. then plan your attack.
To protect you own base outside, from enemy assault, you can plant "Land Spike Turrent",but wait, not only will the turrents shoot plasma pulses, but you can also control the turrents with turrent view, and shoot plasma pulses yourself.Plant "Spider Turrent" inside you base for protection.
Not the violent type? No problem. You can get a "Repair Kit",and simply go around your base, and repair damaged turrents, cameras, inventory stations,etc...
You can plant "Motion Sensors",that detect cloaked enemies.
You can select "Sensor Jammers kit",to jam enemy sensing hardware, for more sleath missions.
You can select a powerful "Satchel Charge pack",for hit and run explosion, one satchel charge can wipe out one generator,or fragment 6 enemies and damage there equiptment.
This just a description of one game. The others, included on the CD-Rom offer there own unique playing strageties.
EnJOY!!!

ive been playing tribes 2 for maybe 2 years. and in all of my experiences i have never found a game that was this good. first off, you know your in for a treat when you start a match and you see men flying around everywhere in arieal combat. The maps are huge and its easy to get lost. Tribes 2 combines rpg and first person shooting like never before. there are 3 armour types light medium and juggernaut. each carrys diffrent weaponry, for example a light can only care small equipment while a juggernaut carrys huge weapons. This gives the player a diffrent role in the game. Juggernauts defend or provide heavy attack while lights go for speed wreckign havoc at great speeds and heights. To give even more team play to the game, you dont have to be a good shooter to do well, you can go around and repair turrets or drive a tank and support your forces. As well as setting up defenses in your base or putting mines in areas where the enemy keeps harrasing you. There are 6 types of veichles. Ranging from fighters (shrikes) to bombers to motor cycles and transports and a mobile base. The game is clearly made to support clan warfare because in the menu you can see tribe websites as well as plan fights in the chat rooms. There is also a single player which is basically a tutorial. It has no real storyline though. This game was made for the online play. But if your internet is too slow or your in a lan party, you can put up to 16 bots which are smart but ultimatley not as fun playing with as humans. The game is also made better by allowing players to create their own maps weapons and characters and veichles so you can have a diffrent experience in the same game. The only downside to this though is that sometimes the game will exit in an unhandled expectation. Although this is rare it will really get you mad. Though if you download the patch which is mandatory for online play, it will happen even less. In summary to me this game is a one of a kind that combines team play with action and creativity. although the learning curve is pretty steep you will still love it. buy it or wait for the upcoming sequel tribes: vengeance.

Tribes 2 has several interesting concepts, such as making defending and supporting roles quite important to the game. You will quickly learn that having no one around to repair your generators after the enemy has destroyed them is a very, very bad thing. You can also pilot various ground vehicles (high speed bikes, tanks, mobile bases) and aircraft (fighter, bomber, and troop transport). Unfortunately, the game has three major flaws.
First, it has a very limited control system -- you only get to assign one button per action. So, if you try to use your joystick when flying one of the ships and assuming you have set the fire weapon action to the button on your mouse (as do most first person shooters), you must first go into the control panel to enable the joystick button to fire your weapons. Vice versa when you exit the vehicle. Inconvenient in the extreme when you are being shot.
Second, most vehicles are very difficult to control and do not react predictably. I personally wonder if the programmers just treated vehicles as very big players, because that is how they drive. Don't expect your aircraft to dive or swoop like in most games -- it is a very limited control system. To add insult to injury, there is no seperate mouse sensitivity between vehicle driving and normal first person movement with your character. This means that if your aircraft decides to inexplicably go into a suicidal dive, you must move your mouse to approximately somewhere in the middle of Egypt before the aircraft responds.
Third, this is one mother of a twitch fest. If you are not good at locking onto a 1/6 inch target, you had better settle for a support role. If you don't have the latest hardware and drivers, you are NOT going to be able to keep up with the big outdoor fights.
Need more power

Well, never played tribes 1 so the learning curve is incredibly steep. (veteran players are no help either, they just laugh at the newbie) But hosting your own lan games and then learning is ok. Gamespot game guide helps too. i play alot of UT (mindless killing is my forte), also UT capture the flag - but team play is tough. I mostly see guys doing their own thing, no teamwork whatsoever - except for the clans. Also it's pretty slow at this point PIII 800, radeon all in wonder, 128mb ram, 30 gig western digital ata 100. Also loading the levels is INCREDIBLY SLOW, a little better in multiplay than in the tutorial but dang, I mean slllooowww. But it is starting to get pretty fun, blowing up stuff secretly, sneaking up on people, sabotaging other peoples bases, setting up killer defense (DougthaThug's landspike turret kills someone else!) I think it's worth it, have fun
