Something for everyone...

Tribes 2 has been around for about 2 years as I write this, and is still going strong with an active player community. It has survived despite competition from more well-known games and despite the closure of the Dynamix division at Sierra which originally produed the game. Why?

Tribes 2 (the sequel to a previous Tribes game) is a first-person shooter (FPS). Using accelerated 3D graphics, the game is visually stunning, with large outdoor areas and detailed texturing. Tribes 2 is designed specifically for team-based multiplayer games. Many people have complained of the lack of a true single-player campaign (there are 5 training missions included) but purchasers will need to be aware that the game is not meant to be played alone.

While most Tribes 2 games are a form of Capture the Flag, there are several other game types included that change the rules of traditional play. Despite what I have seen written in some of the other reviews here, I should point out that there is an active mod and mapping community churning out new content for this game to keep things fresh and interesting.

Tribes 2 caters to players of almost every ability. By allowing players to choose from various armor and weapon types, players who may be turned off from standard "twitch" games have a home with this game. Even if you have a slower computer, or Internet connection, or even slower reflexes, you can play a useful role in a Tribes 2 team as a defender, repair man, etc.

While there have been issues with various video cards and drivers, and a few maps which really stress the frame rates, Sierra recently put out a massive patch for the game which is the culmination of nearly a year of testing. The new patch resolves nearly all the frame rate issues (within reason) and adds a ton of new maps and several new game types. They are even re-releasing the game in a jewel-case edition which should be available by now. Note that it is imperative that playrs actually purchase the game for Internet play as VALID CD KEYS are required for creating an account with Sierra. The new price is a steal, as the new Jewel-case edition includes all the latest fixes, and there are NO montly charges for play other than your normal Internet connection fees.

Tribes 2 gives the user a lot of options for tuning to accomodate slower computers and network connections. Sliders and option boxes for a huge number of features allow users to downgrade the graphic detail and special effects where necessary, and tune the networking code to accomodate for bandwidths from 56k dialup all the way up to LAN speeds. I personally have been playing for nearly two years on a dialup connection, and although I am looking forward to having DSL soon I have been able to enjoy the game despite my "laggy" connection.

While the game is somewhat violent, there is no blood and gore displayed which makes the game somewhat more palatable for younger players. Flying, running, shooting, and blowing up all sorts of equipment is great fun in this game, with marvelous sound and graphics. The "third dimension" of being able to fly (all players carry jetpacks as well as having optional vehicles on some maps) also makes this game pretty much unique among shooters.

Wrapping up, let me say that I think this is one of the best games to appear in several years. Atretail price, this is now a fantastic value.

Good Gameplay, Good Graphics, Fair Chopyness?

Well, in all the anticipation (delaying the game for over a year) I expected less bugs and maybe better guns. The vehicles.. well they still drive like they are on ice.... even the big tanks drive like its floating and yet it has wheels.... hrmm. All and All its a fair game. Sierra really needs a patch out soon! As for the in-game server features its pretty nice. I have a 600mhz, GeForce 32mb (The original GeForce) runs pretty smooth.. so if you got a ATI Rage Pro on a 333mhz comp and play the game..... Do us a favor and don't post a review! cause like the only people who rated with 2 stars are the people who have bad computers... I recomend buying it! I'm sure sierra will fix all the bugs (which there is little of).

Tribes 2 is Awesome Multiplayer

Games like Day of Defeat have been pushing the team multiplayer envelope, but Tribes 2 truly shines as one of the best in the field. The developers have worked hard to make a gorgeous environment that truly supports great team players and tacticians.

First, gameplay in general is just beautiful. Whether you're playing single or multiplayer, you can really appreciate the crisp graphics, the ability to roam in and out of buildings. The weapon selection and diversity is great.

All those addicted to HALO know how much fun vehicles are. Tribes 2 gives you a few to choose from - a Scout ATV, a tank with a spot for a gunner, and even an APC that holds 6!

Multiplayer is where the game really shines though. The game is simply wonderful for teams to work together to achieve an objective. There are games running all the time on the net, and anybody that has trained up on their home system will have no trouble slipping into one of the on line games and getting into the swing of things. I've had people of all ages and backgrounds playing on my computer, and once they've gotten themselves familiar with the controls in the training, they've gone on line and had a blast!

I've read some reviews that say the game is too hard in multiplayer mode. I really haven't found that at all. True, you shouldn't just leap into multiplayer without first learning how the game works. That's true for any game you buy, though. If you go through the training and single player missions, though, it's very easy to learn the ropes and to graduate into team play rather quickly.

Definitely recommended for any team player!

What to expect from this game

First off, I have a high end system (w/ GeForce3) and a cable modem. Since I greatly exceed the minimum requirements, I feel I can accurately describe how the game should optimally run.

Graphics: The actual models aren't too impressive, other fps games have better models for both players and weapons. It's landscapes however, are staggering. The amount of space you play in is akin to a zone in everquest, it's HUGE. The terrain is also similar to what you'd see in everquest, probably a bit more detailed. So, I'd say Tribes2 ranks about average when it comes to detail, but does very well when you consider the terrain.

Sound: There is nothing terribly unique about the sound effects, however sound plays an essential role in this game. Not only is there voice support, there are dozens of preset commands that are prerecorded. For example: V-N-B - V activates the vocal commands, Selects 'I need,' B selects 'a bombadier' These greatly facilitate the team play that makes Tribes 2 special. Because of how sound is used to make the game more playable, I have to give it high marks for that.

Control: Ok, it's good and bad. Good in that there are many different things you can do, bad that you have to learn them all. The default settings will also drive a classic FPS player nuts, but fortunately controls are completely customizable.

Gameplay: This is the finest team FPS game I've played. I was a HUGE Team Fortress Classic addict, but it can't touch this when it comes to the necessity of teamwork. There are so many different roles for a person to play, and it's possible to rapidly change those roles as needed. ON defense you don't just defend your flag, you need to defend your generator that powers your base, your turrets so they can help defend against enemies, your vehicle base so your team can maintain a vehicle presence, etc. THe same goes for offense. Going directly for the flag will tend to get you killed over and over. ONe person takes out the turrets, another provides cover, and another grabs the flag, during the confusion, ANOTHER sneaks inside the base to cause more havoc. Almost every other FPS game you succeed by straight killing the other players, in Tribes 2, if you do that you'll end up missing the guy that just blew up your base turret.

If you're looking for more human interaction in a FPS game, THIS is *the* game. If you enjoy the straight deathmatching, then you should look elsewhere.

The Best Game I have Ever Played

This is the best action/shooter game I have ever played. Great online and offline game. I love the amount of mods to the game like Meltdown2 and Meltdown X. Shooters have always been boring to me until one of my friends showed me and I knew I had to get it. If you are looking for a cool shooter this is the game.

Not for Voodoo card owners. This is BETA software.

Sierra is well known for getting its customers to Beta test their software AFTER they buy it. Remember Tribes (1) and all the patches and upgrades and bug fixes? Tribes2 is no different and if anything, it's much worse. When you first insert the cd you have to endure megabytes of upgrade (repair) patches before you can even start the game. The game play concept is fatally flawed. The idea is that up to 300 (150 per team) people can play and therefore teamwork is absolutely essential. People don't work that way. Imagine trying to get even 50 on your team to cooperate! Ages running from say, 11 to 55. It won't happen. EVER! Gameplay itself is identical to the first Tribes. No difference at all. What IS different are: new maps; better graphics (if you have the high-end hardware); different weapons; changed and more time-consuming invo procedure. The bases are so far apart that play is boring for grab-the-flag. It takes FOREVER to get the game loaded and playing even when it works. The vehicles I tried, like the grav-sled, skitter all over and are nearly impossible to use. Overall, this game is not worth the price unless you have at least a 17" monitor with a minimum 100 fps refresh rate, a 1.2 ghz cpu, mucho RAM and a hot Geforce2 card. I have a 500 mhz AMD, older 15", VooDoo3 3000. After MANY HOURS of dealing with downloads, messing with .cs files and changing drivers, I did finally get the game to run fairly well. However, more than 12 players in the game caused me to lag. It wasn't worth all that effort, and definitely wasn't worth the money.

Great if you have a HAL 9000 computer

This is an excellent game. That said, only if you have a very powerful computer. My 500mhz AMD and Geforce2 MX with a cable connection still the game is choppy with most of the graphic settings reduced or off. There are also a number of bugs, expect to sit for a half hour waiting for the auto-update feature to update your version. Assuming that you make it in to the game you will find the gameplay to be mostly the same from T1, wich is very good. It remains a solid on-line team play FPS. However some of the new features favor offence, attacking more than defending. What new toys you get to defend your base with are mostly useless. The enemy team however is free to attack using new cloak packs. These make them invisable to players, sensors and turrets. It is no fun to have to deal with a camper in your base with a cloak pack. While these are not really flaws, if you are on a losing team just expect to lose more. This drains the "Gee this is cool!" feeling to; "Gee, why do I bother?"

IF you have a light speed connection and a Cray 2 computer, you MIGHT have a chance to get good IF you play long enough that MIGHT turn it around to a perfectly enjoyable game, IF......

As a major fan of the original Tribes, I was really excited to pick up Tribes 2. What could be better than an update of one of my favorite games, with better graphics and more options.

That said, I had a very difficult time getting into it. Although the graphics were definitely better, and the levels much more interesting, I found the new interface much less intuitive than the original. In addition, it crashed fairly regularly, and ran pretty slow at times on my machine (Athlon 700 and GeForce 256). After a couple dozen online games, I still couldn't get into it, so I put it away for a while.

Recently, I began a game project using the Torque engine (which stems from the Tribes 2 code base), so I decided to start playing it again. I had picked up a GeForce 2, and had a faster Internet connection. It looks like the game is now much more stable (I've been playing it almost every night for a couple of weeks without a single crash), and it runs at acceptable speeds. Now that most of the distractions are gone, I've finally been able to get into it, and I have to say that it's now a worthy successor.

Tribes 2 is possibly the best team-based shooter currently available. If you've got a decent system, and like other team-based shooters, you should definitely check it out, especially at its current price.

Well here it is folks. The game that many of us have been waiting two years for. While the game has been available for more than a year and a half, it has been plagued with problems from the start. Now Siera, in their infinite wisdom decided to listen to the people that decide on the longevity of a game, the true, diehard fans. The game that Siera rushed out the door was a slow, trudgingly boring piece of work that had all th AI doing most of the work for the Defense. The gameplay is now more balanced, more stable, and two new mods have been added for the people who are hardcore. Tribes 2 classic and Team Rabbit 2 have been added after Alex Rodberg, the Siera marketing guru decided to listen to what the competitive community had to say. These mods are not for the weak of heart. The gameplay is fast, furious and relies on skill to play to any amount of success. Here's to you Alex. Team Rabbit 2 is the best game to ever be released. Right next to Tribes 1 that is. <3
