Wickedly hazardous to your schedule

Do not buy this game if you are working on the cure for cancer, world peace, or a longer lasting light bulb. We need you to continue doing just what you are, right now. For anyone else that wants to have a blast playing the variety of roles and piloting/driving the many vehicles in BF 1942, then waste no time. This game deserves all of the "Game of the Year" awards it has received, and once you become adept at the keyboard and mouse controls (this takes a little time) you will find yourself immersed and enthralled in a fun, fast paced online multiplayer game.

Best game I've ever played

This game took me away when I started playing it. The only bad thing is (this didn't happen to me but it can) that the graphics for this game is so good and the memory is so big that it might just not be worth getting. I would only get this game if I knew I had a top-of-the-line computer. The Road to Rome expansion pack is also worth getting. I also think The Secret Weapons pack looks like it's worth getting but I haven't bought it yet.

The huge multiplayer real wwII action shooter has arrived!

I heard a lot of great comments about Battle Field 1942: Awesome action, real-time war--realistic wwII hardware and equipement use, great engine, very fun play; and more. Indeed I was intrigued, and eventually after experiencing a very fun demo, i had to pick this one up. It is a must-have. Battlefield 1942 is set in the World War II stage of time, where times are most dire and demanding. The game features a rendered functional and beatiful engine, with very nice geometry, optimizations, a mix dynamic lightning maps and static bitmaps, good shadow renders, nice character detail and environment detail, great animations, realistic sound effects and the standard awesome use of hardware 3-D sound support, great interface, etc. SO on. The game is quite laggy online, but is fine on lan. IT is really fun, you can control all kinds of vehicles on wide open-ended gorgerous realistic maps, such as tanks, jeeps, airplanes, ships, etc. The maps are set on places such as islands, etc. It's a great game and well worth the price--on my 9500 pro the game performs at 1024x768x32 with all other settings maxed out averagely at 60fps, but drops while playing online and in intense combat. The game is very laggy online, even on high speed internet broadband(Cable/DSL) access. Overall I see why Battle Field 1942 won multiplayer game of the year! I seriously recommend this game...:)

Great game, but you need hi-end system and hi-speed modem

First off, you need a very good system to play this game, that's really the only downside I can see, (which isn't a problem for me, I've got a new P4 2.8 gig, etc.) So in fairness to the developers, if someone has a weak system and thinks the game stinks, it's probably because they just can't enjoy the game as it was intended.

Personally, I was blown away by this game. The graphics and gameplay are fantastic. It's all the fun of a first-person shooter, with a challenging bit of realism (but not so much that you die every time you scratch your pinky).

The vehicles take the game 10 steps further. The first time I hopped into the machine-gunner position on top of a tank while another player was driving, I thought it was one of the greatest gaming moments for me. Same goes for the gunner positions in the bomber planes, very cool stuff. Also, character choices are pretty well-balanced, much like Team Fortress Classic.

Word of warning, this game can be played in single-player mode, but it is not NEARLY as satisfying as playing online. I.e. if you don't have a high-speed connection, don't buy this, you won't be able to play multiplayer and the single-player mode just isn't as much fun.

Overall, if you enjoy shooters and/or WWII games, this is probably the game for you. Also, I had Medal of Honor before I bought this. I thought MoH was cool and figured B'field would be about the same...I was way wrong. Nothing against MoH, it's got a fine single-player game, but the excitement of B'field 1942's multiplayer games just tops the cake.

My friend's comments on the game pretty much sums it up. "I was sitting in the ball turret position in a bomber, shooting at the tanks and jeeps whizzing by on the ground, when all of the sudden I see this guy floating by in a parachute. That's when I realized it was my pilot."

AWSOME GAME!!!

This game has to be one of my favorites of today. Before, I had downloaded the demo versions, when I say versions I am talking about the single player and the multiplayer demos. Once installed, I was amazed on how beautiful the graphics looked, and how much fun the game really was. So, the day BF1942 came out, I went out, bought it and I was amazed once again! There are over 15 maps you can play from. I myself personally play this game on the internet a lot, and it runs GREAT! Of course, I have a really great internet, I use a cable modem, and note if you have a 56k modem, switch to Cable or DSL! I really hate it when other people rate this game LOW on scores because their computers are outdated. They should go and either upgrade their computer, or buy another one! But the last 2 reviews from "gamer" are weak, he rates it low, because he has a sorry computer and doesnt know the meaning of UPDATING! Over all this game is great for Multiplayer, Single Player and everything. Highly recomended for hours and hours of fun!

Battlefield 1942, What they don't tell you!

Awsome idea! But if you don't have a state of the art system forget it. If you dont have better than a 48,000 connection forget about playing online. I have a great system and like everyone else I have a problem with lockup, & loading times. Some games in the single player instant battles won't even load. If you get one of the games that are out now, you have to d/l a patch so you can play online.

Great concept, needs a little fine tuning

I've played the single player and mulitplayer demos, and both are really fun and addicting. The single player works almost flawlessly, except for the fact that the AI is kinda stupid when on foot. But the multiplayer needs a little work. It takes me about 5 tries to get into a server without crashing or disconnecting, and when I do get in, most servers lag so badly I have to leave. Occasionally I'll get into a good server with minimal lag. Another problem is it's almost impossible to kill someone without a high-explosive weapon like grenades or bazookas. I've unloaded 3 clips from a thompson into someone and they still didn't die. The airplane controlls get a little sketchy sometimes as well. Overall, if EA manages to fix these bugs, BF1942 would be a must-buy.

Death or glory await...

Ingredients:

1 part Medal of Honor
2 parts Saving Private Ryan
50 gallons high octane tank fuel
Decorate with assorted bullets and shells

Armchair soldiers of the world rejoice - at long last, a comprehensive and damn near exhaustive attempt at bringing large scale, semi-realistic 3D warfare to the PC.
Veterans of EA's Medal of Honor series will be right at home with the basic setup; grab one of five kit bags, with appropriate weapons and equipment from Medic to Scout and trudge off to war in a variety of landmark WW2 battles. Where this game really starts to kick in is the quite spectacular scale of these engagements.
Fancy yourself a pilot? Hop into the cockpit of a Spitfire and...well...spit fire at the enemy from the clouds. Always enjoyed the rumble of heavy armor? No problem, find a shiny new Tiger tank with the keys in the ignition. Don't like getting your hands dirty? Swivel the massive guns of a cruiser and rain artillery on the baddies. There's so many amusing ways to frag your friends and neighbours you'll be hard pushed to find more variety in a 3D shooter.

While Battlefield does include a limited single player campaign, its in the online realms that this game really shines. 56k modem users may scrape by in the smaller battles, but you'll need a higher speed connection if you really want to get the most out of this game. Battles can be up to 60 players, but personally I find the 32 player games hit the right balance between scale and teamwork...too many people, and you'll never find a spare tank to play with!

Graphically 1942 doesn't really break any new ground...its certainly not as crisp and detailed as Allied Assualt, but more than makes up for this with the massive size of the playing areas. There's some nice details, such as the swaying trees and dust kicked up by tanks, but you'll probably be too busy ducking from .50 cal fire to notice. The sound is great, with the crackle of machine guns and the whine of dive bombers filling the air. There's also some nice animation from an infantry point of view, whipping out a new magazine for your Thompson carbine and slapping it home, or sneaking up behind an unsuspecting sentry and letting your knife do your talking.

On the downside this is a game that requires a fair deal of cooperation to be really fun...you will find yourself out numbered and outgunned more than once because your smacktard team is busy queing for planes on the other side of the map.

Things can get pretty dull in the single player campaign where the computer AI is sometimes less than helpful (fortunately there are several patches for this game that clean things up a bit)
But, when it all comes together you'll be whooping with joy as your tanks roll into the enemy base, supported by bombers and scout-directed artillery. The new Road to Rome expansion will certainly add new life to this game, plus the multitude of conversion mods that are available from the net, including the much talked about Desert Combat mod.

There's just so many different ways to play, you'll be shaking your head with the scope of this title. It's so well balanced, from crawling through the bushes as a sniper to take pot-shots at artillery crews, to buzzing the treeline with your P-51 Mustang...from the squealing gears as your Panzer IV shifts its gun turret, to the frenzied house to house fighting in the dusty streets of Berlin. Everything you thought was cool about war movies is somewhere in this game...I recommend you lock, load, and deploy right now...

Awesome WW2 Shooter

This game is an awesome WW2 shooter. It's weapons are modeled just like they looked and so are the vehicles. That's another sweet aspect of the game. They have all the tanks, planes, jeeps, mounted weapons, etc. I have never played the multiplayer on the game [which I wish to try sometime!] but i'm sure the single player campaings are just as good. The envioronments you play in are very close to what those battlefields really looked like. I think this is one of the best games on the pc, and I can't wait to try out the expansion pack [Road to Rome]. If you like awesome first person WW2 shooters, get this game!!!!!

Awesome game with minor bugs

Yes you do need a decent system to run this game so it wont bog down. The multiplayer game on this is untouched by any other war game out there right now. Not only are you a foot soldier, sniper, engineer, etc but you can also control a number of different vehicles - all of which have their own strengths and weaknesses as they did in WWII. For example the Panzer tanks are superbly accurate (as they were a dominant tank then). Most of the maps make for a fun gameplay. The maps are also finely detailed and are very similar to actual combat scenes from the war.

The only downsides (and no big deal) - there are still bugs to be tweaked out as my compuer has locked up 3x in about 200 times of me getting on the game. They do release patches so hopefully it'll all be perfect one day. The single player mode is ok, the campaign part (fighting the entire war as axis or allies)is definitely better than instant battles. Unless you raise the difficulty, the single player is too easy and will end up not helping you if you use that to "practice" before going to multiplayer.

All in all, this game is one of the best multiplayer games out and I do recommend this to everyone who likes these types of games and has a machine that can run it properly.
