Tribes 2 + MOHAA/SH + Great FX + Low Req yet looks spectacular + A great new bound to be popular Genre, taking off where tribes 2 left off. Just get it and experience similiar styles as RPG FPS STRATEGY.

I've finnaly found a game that works for me in all ways in this starving industry.

Hope you have a killer pc

This game, is great. Probably the best game to ever hit the shelves, BUT, hope you have a killer PC with lots of RAM, good graphics card and memory. This game will be very jerky and laggy even on low settings. Everything else on it is good, the weapons and the vechiles are amazing. Just hope you have a VERY good pc.

A bit overhyped but still a good game

To start off, I think it's fair to say that I am not in a very good position to review this game because it didn't run well on my computer. However, performance issues still should be noted. I have a Pentium 3 800 Mhz with 256 MB of RAM and a Geforce 3. I guess it's not a gaming rig with a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 with an Athlon 2700+, but it still should be able to run Battlefield 1942 decently at the lowest detail levels. Unfortunately, it doesn't. My computer chugs along at 10-20 fps at the lowest settings. Even the mouse seems laggy in the menu. The 3 minute load time is also really annoying. And no, the 1.2 patch didn't help.

However, ignoring the performance issues, it's still a great game. In the past year, 3 notable World War II games have come out: Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield 1942. Battlefield 1942 is definitely a step beyond RTCW and MOHAA. IMHO RTCW fell short on the number of multiplayer maps; it always seemed like I was playing the same maps over and over again. In addition, one of the checkpoint maps had phoney machine gun and bomb sounds that came from the same building everytime you passed by it. Yeah, the flamethrower was cool, but that was about it. MOHAA had a wide map selection, but the aging CS model of gameplay put me to sleep. On one map, the Allied forces need to plant a bomb on an Axis flak cannon. Sound familiar? It sounds just like CS. Battlefield 1942 is a radical departure from these two games in that it offers massive multiplayer maps with vehicles. It gives a different feel to the WWII gaming experience in a way I cannot describe. Simply put, it's just better than RTCW and MOHAA. However, I think the fact that there are 35 different vehicles overhypes the game. Yeah, it's nice to have different vehicles. But the 35 include tanks from all 5 sides, planes from all 5 sides, and cars from all 5 sides and everything pretty much has the same properties except that they look different.

Battlefield 1942 is also hyped to be everything Tribes 2 was supposed to be but wasn't. As a big Tribes 2 fan, I find that a bit offensive because Battlefield 1942 comes nowhere close to being what Tribes 2 should've been. Battlefield 1942 is much more slow paced than Tribes 2 and is no match for Tribes 2's heart-pounding action. I'm not saying that Battlefield is not a good game, I'm just saying that Battlefield 1942 has a different flavor. Battlefield 1942 can't be hyped to be everything Tribes 2 was supposed to be just because Tribes 2 crashed all the time and Battlefield 1942 doesn't and because both games have vehicles.

I just wish that I had a better computer to play Battlefield 1942 because it is just a great game. However, I think it's a bit overhyped.

Nothing short of amazing

Battlefield 1942 is absolutely incredible. The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is great, the sound is amazing. This game also has a free-rooming type of feel to it in its multiplay. there are over 30 different machines to command, pilot, and conquer. There are several different aircrafts and tanks and ships for players to use based on a well rounded assortment of WWII-based maps. I'm buying this game the day it comes out. I suggest you do the same.

A Demo of Battlefield 1942

I got a demo of this game from PC Gamer magazine. It only had one level on it then, but now you can get the beta which has two. Even being just one level this game was great. I've played it for hours and am very happy with it. It has great graphics, not the best, but still very good. You can play as either Axis or Allies in this game and may control many tanks and other vehicles, or just run around on the ground. I have only two concerns about this game: the first being that for the demo, the game needed at least an 800mhz processor, 256mb of ram, and only supported Geforce based graphics cards with nVeiw technology or cards powered by ATI's Catlyst. I have a brand new ATI Radeon 9000 pro with 128mb of memory and it works great on this card (it's made by Powercolor). I hope EA will make it work on more PCs, especially slower ones with less memory and older cards. If they don't, then I don't know if the game will sell much because not a large number of people will be able to support the game.
My other concern is that the game developers say that the game can support up to 64 players, but I don't know if this will work and if it does will it be too slow? I hope this helped you. I'm trying to decide if I should order it or not.

Best WWII game to date

Speaking from having only played the Multiplayer demo, simply the best game I've ever played, and definitely the best WWII game. The best way to describe it in short order is as a cross between Medal of Honor, Team Fortress Classic, and WWII online (much larger scale than the two former, and smaller scale than the latter). There are no roleplaying elements though I hope they have a central score-keeping facility of some kind (I play Bif Powell, if you see me, say 'hey' :))

The best thing you can do is just download the multiplayer demo to get a taste of it, rather than take mine or other reviewer's words for it. That said, I have experienced little to no lag (cable modem), no warping or staggered movement, and the game seems very solid, with no crashes or freaky behavior in general, other than they could still use some work on the in-game server browser even after the MP patch. The graphics at highest settings are top-notch. Highly recommended.

Amazing potential, partially realized

This game combines the best of many recent titles, from Tribes2 to Medal of Honor and adds in enough different vehicles to keep any die-heard gamer in training for weeks to master them all. The creators of similar games expect you to pay [price]/month for what this offers for free after you open the box, which will certainly have an impact on the MMPO market. The sheer number of different combination of maps, (each of which has their own subset of vehicles available to either side) vehicles and character classes will be guaranteed to make this a popular game for a long time! The game also has the courage to throw out the old gaming standard of running over a floating icon to increase ammo or health. You increase these by standing next to lockers or crates of equipment which cause an indicator to appear in the right side of the screen, and after a short time you automatically restock. The same system is used to take over control points - stand close to a flag and after a time it will turn neutral, and if no enemy units are within the flag zone it will soon turn to your side. In that way a single competent player can keep a spawn point from switching to enemy control by hiding in buildings nearby.

The game itself could be better though. The graphics requirements will make gameplay on anything less than a GeForce 4x00 or better card choppy, and even on a nice card the levels lack the detail or quality of effects seen in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The processor requirement for servers is also quite a bit higher than other games - thankfully Digital Illusions has added an indicator in the multiplayer selection screen to let you know if the server is trying to host too many players so you can avoid the resulting mess. Even on a decent server some warping still occurs and can be most annoying when it causes you to miss with your limited ammo and very long reload times. Combat can be frustratingly (intentionally?) realisitic with a lack of good impact graphics to let you know if you are actually hitting your target and highly inaccurate weapons. Many of the long range weapons such as tank and ship cannons also have curiously short ballistic paths making targeting difficult. The UI system for respawning is clumsy and slow to respond, often missing a last second change in spawn points or class change and lacking automatic features to choose a spawn point for you if there is only one left.

Despite these problems, the game has serious potential to be game of the year thanks to its fast and furious gameplay and amazing variety of vehicles. Hopefully the creators will continue to work on some of the rough edges and also release more maps and map making tools for the public.

I have recentlly become a fan of the FRS. I have long been a World War 2 enthusiast. I have been waiting for a RTS WW2 game to surface but, it hasn't happened to my satisfaction yet. Battlefield 1942 is awesome. The graphics are KILLER I will be playing it for months to come. Buy this game, you will not be disappointed.
p.s. Amazon has the best price. Buy it here I paid [price] more, somewhere else.

Addictive Gameplay!!! Be Prepared for WAR!

I bought this game a week ago and Im suprised that Im here writing this review and not playing! First things first. If your looking for a multiplayer/first-person shooter thats about blowing up tanks, shooting down planes, and stabbing your enemies in the back then buy this one.

Multiplayer is the gem of this package, in my opinion. Using teamwork against to take over positions on the battlefield and using several different weapons to do so, and up to 64 players at the same time. You can jump into a tank, airplane, or even a submarine!! Or, snipe a soldier from the top of a hill, or drop landmines on an airfield.
