The Curse of Monkey Island is the 3rd game in Lucasarts' highly acclaimed graphic adventure series, and finds our hero Guybrush Threepwood tasked with removing a cursed ring that has turned his girlfriend into a gold statue.
My siblings and I dug this game out over the holidays, and (having memorized all the solutions to all the puzzles) went through it in one straight session. This game holds up surprisingly well for being close to a decade old. The graphics look like they were pulled straight from a cartoon, and only the pixelation in the cutscenes will hint at the game's true age. The voice acting is spot-on perfect (Alan Young, voice of Scrooge McDuck, has a hilarious role), with lots of clever dialogue and delivery and occasional references to Star Wars and other Lucasarts games. Puzzles are reasonably challenging without being too obscure, and most gamers should be able to find their way to the end without consulting a walkthrough too much, if at all.
The major strike against this game is that if you're not familiar with the Monkey Island series, a portion of the story and background will leave you scratching your head (such as why Guybrush starts the game floating in a bumper car in the middle of the ocean). The first two installments in the game were DOS-based, and they were old even when Curse of Monkey Island was new. There's actually a huge portion of the game at the end dedicated to sorting out all the various plot threads of the series, and new players might find this a little drawn out. Still, the basic premise of the game is simple enough to follow.
There's no guarantee this game will work on WindowsXP, but I've had no problems running it, so it's worth giving it a shot (a group of fans also developed programs to make the game run smoother, for those having difficulty with it). The Curse of Monkey Island is a classic game in a genre that has been criminally neglected in today's gaming industry.
MY FAVORITE GAME!

The Curse of Monkey Island is my favorite game! It was the first adventure game I had bought. For about a week, I couldn't stop playing it! The graphics are extremely good for a game that came out several years ago. It looks cartoonish, which eliminates all the problems you have to worry about with 3D games. The user interface is outstanding. You just have to click to walk of interact with an item or person. The puzzles are hard, but not bad enough to have you stuck for hours. If you do get stuck, you can look for numerous fan pages on the internet. Almost all have a walkthrough section that you can find help on. The game is also the most hillarious one I've ever played. Many times I paused and laughed. All my friends complained how much I talked about the game. It had my attention the whole time. I realy recommend this game for any person who wants a game where you don't lose the whole thing for one mistake. You can never get stuck. For any fan of adventure games, this should be on your favorites list.
Best Game Ever Made!

I absolutely love this game. It has so many puzzles and you have to really think on some of them. I didn't want to stop playing it till i beat it. I have the other two Monkey Islands, too. Which i recommend to anyone. No matter your age you will love this game. The characters are hillarious and you get to choose what Guybrush (the main character) is going to say out of the choices you get. The good thing about this game and the other 2 is the fact that you can't die, no matter what. It is just an adventure game that you can play and laugh and enjoy without wondering whether of not you are going to die. Now Go Get This Game Right Now!
This game is hillarious!

This game is a must have for adventure fans. It's 2D graphics are great and there is much humor going on.
If you buy any of the Monkey Island series games, buy this one. (Escape from Monkey Island is 3D graphics and has a different interface, not as good as this one in my opinion.)
Great game but "Monkey Island Arcives" is a better deal

Wow, when i played this game 3 years ago I was amazed. The game's plot had a great follow up the 2nd one's(witch I thought was going to be very hard to do). But it also allowed new monkey island users kind of join in at the middle of the monkey island saga. You didn't need to play the first 2 games to understand the charictors or the plot (but it does help). Speaking of plot "Lucas Arts" shure hit this nail on the head. This game kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and it took me 6 days of intensive playing to actully finish the game. Plus as an added bouns Lucas arts added another level of playing that had new puzzles in it called "Mega Monkey" witch allowed experenced players to play the game again and not be board with the old ones(a real asset to the game). But the thing monkey island fans noticed most about the game was the excelent voice overs, Guybrush (the main charicter)had an great voice assigned to him just like fans had imagned his voice to be in the first two games(witch had no voices only text). The 2d animation stile allowed great semi abstract backgrounds to be drawn without taking up too much memory on the computer, It also allowed the game to be longer, have more charicters and a great point-and-click control interface. Really a must have for ANY gamer, but there is a better way to get it than this jewl case. If you do a search for monkey island on amazon.com you will find something called "The Monkey Island Arcives" witch includes games 1, 2 and 3(this game is # 3) for only $5 more than this game. It is a great pack for any future(or present)Monkey Island Fan.

The Monkey Island series (The Secret Of Monkey Island, The Secret Of Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge, Curse Of Monkey Island) has been a favorite of mine for a long time. The first two in the series were excellent, with humor, wit, and filled with puzzles that will drive you to play for hours. However, CMI did not compare to the greatness of the first two games. I was very dissapointed, especially at the rewardless, short, unexplained ending. LucasArts stil did a pretty good job with animation, sound, and a solid challenge.
Wonderful game, and at this price, a steal.

I played this game 2 years ago, and loved it from beginning to end. Lucas Arts finally reawoke the Monkey Island Adventure series and drew me back into the world of Guybrush Threepwood. For any gamer, this game is a must. The satirical script and hilarious characters make it an enjoyable experience like no other game I have played. While it is a bit dated, the brilliantly done cartoon graphics show little sign of aging and with a price this low, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

I recived this game for Christmas this past year and thinks its a great game. The replay factor of the game is great. Ive beaten both game modes (one mode has more puzzles than the other) and want to beat it again! There is no bad language or violence in it. The only thing that deals with violence is when the main character fakes death. Even though it has no violence or guns, I as a 15 year old gamer believe its one of the greatest video games out on the market. Even though this is the 3rd game in the series, it is not a necessity to have played the other 2.
Great game

Like its predecessors, the Curse of Monkey Island sets another example of a great adventure game full of wit, humor, and excitement. The beautiful graphics, music, and intricate plot all seem to harmonize with each other so well, I really got the feeling that LucasArts has a lot of talented people. The puzzles can be annoyingly difficult sometimes (you get stuck at a certain part, and just cannot figure out the missing link no matter how long and hard you try, which can discourage you from playing). But even if you have to use hints (myriads available on the web) to get through, it's still worth experiencing the overall plot and artwork of this game.
