Superior adventure game

You can't beat Monkey Island, and The Curse of Monkey Island is the best game in the series (so far). Guybrush Threepwood, the loveable pirate-wannabe who fears porcelain, is the protagonist of this bizarre story about adventure, romance and monkeys.

The game plays like your standard LucasArts adventure--you control Guybrush by clicking with the mouse where you want him to walk. You interact with people and objects via an intuitive menu that allows you to choose between touching, picking up, talking, looking at, smelling and a few other actions. The game is easy to play, and it is very, very fun.

Maybe I am a little biased. I've always been a huge fan of adventure games, the reason being that they are fun. Most computer games nowadays, be they of the action, strategy or role-playing genres, are not really fun; they're just addictive. The software companies aren't concerned with making you happy, they just want to hook you on their products so they can sell you the sequels. LucasArts, at least the guys who make the Monkey Island games, are different. They make good games.

What makes Curse of Monkey Island so good? Well, basically, it's funny. That's what keeps you playing--you want to see what crazy thing will happen next. It's like an interactive comedy. The story is hilarious, as are the characters' voices. One especially funny character is Murray, the talking skull whom Guybrush meets very early in the game. Throughout the game, I found myself constantly looking forward to the next encounter with Murray.

The story is the big selling point, but basically everything about Monkey Island 3 (this game) is great. The graphics, although not much by today's everything-must-be-3D standards, are pleasant to look at and appropriately comical in and of themselves. The audio is terrific, especially the voice acting. Even the opening sequence is very well done. Overall, this game is worth your money, guaranteed.

Great adventure!

The third Monkey Island game is one of the better adventures you'll ever play. The music is amazing, the voice acting perfect and the puzzles hard, but fair. What really stands out this time around though, is the gorgeous visuals. CMI looks like an interactive cartoon and the sense of details are amazing. The game isn't quite as good as the recently released Escape From Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, but still a must have. This is a perfect choice if you are interested in a game where you use your mind and not your trigger finger. Truely wonderful.

Hilariously fun!

There's times when you just want to play a game to laugh and relax. Curse of Monkey Island is perfect for such a thing. The game is chock full of tongue-in-cheek humor and all sorts of hilarity.

Our hero is Guybrush Threepwood ('Guybrush' came from the original sprite art which was a file called guy.brush, the name stuck; and 'Threepwood' which was thought up by a contest with the Lucasarts staff). Guybrush is a pirate, or he wants to be one, you can never tell for sure. He's in love with Governor Elaine Marley, who is currently being wooed by the Evil (and dead) Pirate LeChuck. (Apprently elain told Lechuck to drop dead... so he did, and came back as an undead pirate)

Elaine has been turned into a gold statue by a cursed ring and Guybrush needs to rescue her from the pirates that stole her away and remove the curse. His adventures take him to three islands and overseas where he meets pirate monkeys, evil chickens, vegetarian cannibals, and lactose intolerant volcano gods.

The animation this game is excellent, the humor is top notch, the voice acting is great, and the story is excellent.

I can't wait until Monkey Island Four!

A great conclusion to one of the Adventure greats.

I've got to hand it to LucasArts. They hired a team of Disney-calibur Animators, hillarious screenwriters, and great voice actors to get this game up and running. They created the only sequel I would accept. Earl Boen does a great LeChuck, and you've got to grin when you hear the Barber Shop Trio perform their horrendous music. Plus, the Banjo Duel. There's for an interesting puzzle. Once again, gotta hand it to LucasArts. They really know their stuff!

The Monkeys Are Listening...

The third game in the Monkey Island series is a fun game for all ages (though the puzzles, due to their inane oddness, may complex younger gamers). The familiar music is there, as well as some of the funniest/groaning (depending on your humour) jokes ever to grace a computer game. Unfortunately, Le Chuck has returned also, as the meanest, deadest demon-pirate ever to sail the seven seas!

Guybrush Threepwood returns as the slightly under-the-thumb wannabe pirate. In true pirate-style yarn, his one true love - Governor Elaine Marley - has been turned into a gold statue, due to a cursed ring Guybrush slipped onto her finger. He must save her before Le Chuck (who has a crush on her himself) takes her away.

I have been a big fan of the Monkey Island games since I played the first one on my Amiga years and years ago. The graphics have improved (which were great anyway - for the time) with cartoonish animations. But, it also retains the lush, colourful tropical backgrounds that have become familiar backdrops to the locations - such as Melee Island and Monkey Island.

As well as funny characters for the kids (Stan the skull, the voodoo lady among others), there are also loads of in-jokes and subtle satire for the grown ups to enjoy to. The interface has slightly changed, though it is easy to grasp in no time.

The puzzles can be too obscure for their own good though - some puzzles are solved by means of elimination rather than thought and ingenuity. Despite this, this is a game for all - especially for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean (is it me or is the film VERY similar? Must be coincidence...must be).

Anyway, if you are after a humorous, witty game, with unique colourful characters (and baddies) then this is the game for you.

It is just a shame that LucasArts have left the series to memories. Surely, there are only so many Star Wars games that can be made...isn't there?

HILARIOUS!

This game had me in stiches the second I started watching the intro, and it only gets better. Truelly one of the best games I have ever played, I have yet to find a game that makes me laugh as much as this one does. Add to that spectacular, beautifully animated graphics, easy interface and awesome characters (I especially digged that "scary" skull, Murray), not to mention an amazing musical score, folks, we have a winner here. Treat yourself.

Man, I love Lucas Arts! It's one of the few dependable companies you can count on to pop out a few great, funny games a year (and a few Star Wars games, to boot)! Its products are all every bit as good as its originals! I went into this game wondering how Lucas Arts could possibly live up to the expectations of the Monkey Island series, and, I've learned how! The animation, the jokes within jokes, the story... I don't see how anyone could give this game less than a mediocre review! If you want a game that will entertain you for hours, then this is the one!

The Curse of Monkey Island is an enjoyable, handsome-looking game -- but it does not come close to capturing the magic and originality of the first two games. My main qualm is that the subtlety of humor that was witnessed in the first two games is ... well ... no longer subtle. Instead, we have a wacky Disney-like cartoon. Guybrush Threepwood is the most notable victim of this change (though Elaine is pretty horrid too.) In the original Monkey Island games, I *liked* Guybrush. Sure, he was incompetant, but he was also admirably low-key and generally unperturbed by things. It's a big part of what made him funny. Now, he is "wacky" Guybrush. He's cartoonish and very animated, with nutsy facial expressions and goofier dialogue. To me, this is bad. With the exception of a clever moment here and there, it feels too oriented towards little children. Plus, we have to hear his voice. Lord preserve us. I don't want to hear his voice. I'm far too aware of the fact that I'm just listening to some dorky game-studio actor ruin what could've been quality dialogue. There are a few character voices in the game that are especially well done and quite hilarious (the French captain comes to mind), but overall, I just really dislike the voiceovers. I think they're gay. I should mention that you can, to the designer's credit, turn off the voices -- but once you've heard them, it's really no use. Besides, the game was designed, on the whole, with the voiceovers in mind, so, even if you dislike them, you'll feel you're missing out without them on. I'd just prefer not have to worry about them one way or the other. Sure, it displays technological advancement, as does the fancy animation, but if all that only adds up to make it dorkier and more kid-oriented, what's the point?

CMI isn't a bad game -- it's still an entertaining way to kill some time, and there are still funny moments here and there. But it does not live up to the first 2 games, and this is not the Guybrush Threepwood that I knew and loved in my old Amiga days.

One of the finest, funniest adventure games ever.

This game is a refreshing break from the tedium of shoot-em-up, blow-em-up, run-em-over-and-laugh games that pass for qualiy game-writing. The authors created a cartoon world that you get to explore, move items around in, and try to solve a myriad of puzzles in.

What is particularly great about this game is that it is hysterically funny. There are moments of sheer insanity that have you laughing aloud and making other people wonder just what you are doing. The time you have to sunburn somebody so that you can peel off a tattoed map of his back is the strangest comic moment in the history of computer games.

The interface is pretty easy to use, and the puzzles are difficult enough. There are two difficulty levels you can play at, which is rather nice.

Highly recommended, and rather cheap these days too! Get the combo pack and you can get the first two games of this series, which, while really dated, are also a lot of fun.

Not your typical computer game

I was skeptical that a computer game could actually be funny for adults, since most games seem aimed at teenage boys. But this game is very funny - I laughed out loud several times and smiled often. I was also afraid that the puzzles in an adventure game would be too hard. For the most part the puzzles were solvable. There were a few I got stuck on, but it is not hard to find hints, clues and walkthroughs on the internet. There was little violence in the game (some comical sword fighting) and you don't kill anyone and you can't be killed. I am looking forward to the next installment of the game.
