Regarding a competitor

My kids eat cheerios religiously and currently they are offering free computer games with the cereal. We got Hasbro Scrabble on a cd in the cheerios box (the cd also was a AOL cd but you do not have to install) and the game works great. So, for all of the folks who struggled with the full version, go buy some cereal and enjoy.

I bought this version because it specifically said it would work with Windows XP, but it didn't.

Works fine for me

Unlike others who've reported problems, it works just fine for me on my Windows ME Athlon-based system. I had the older Hasbro Interactive version of Scrabble, and wanted to upgrade because that one forced me to change the display to 256 colors in order to play it. This one works fine in high color, and I have experienced none of the problems others have reported.

Scrabble Complete works with firewall

Using ZoneAlarm Pro v4.5 (patched) on Windows XP Pro SP1.
In ZoneAlarm Pro, Program Control, Programs Tab, add the ScrabbleComplete.exe program (if not present).
Modify Access and Server fields to "Allow".
Then modify the ZoneAlarm Pro options for the program...
In Security Tab: Must check 'This program uses other programs to access the Internet'.
In Expert Rules Tab: Protocol TCP-UDP port 2234 (Required by MS Direct Play) allowed.
The program then works well for me... I cannot guarantee it will work for you or be responsible for any problems this recommended configuration may cause.

Does not work in Windows 98

Does not work in windows 98. Get black screen. Have to do hard reboot.
Tried proactively configuring ZoneAlarm to allow internet access, but that did not help.

Remove Infogrames from list of acceptable software distributors. I mean, if their software does not work in windows 98, then what kind of quality control do they have? Obviously none at all.

fun for all ages

This game is fun for all ages and levels. My 10 year old son plays it, and his vocabulary is improved by the hints and suggestions. It is a big help having a dictionary right there to check words. For me, the professor mavern assessment helps me to improve on my game by suggesting mini games to strengthen my weak plays.
Having read all the other reviews, i must be very lucky. I have had this program installed on 3 different computers at different times with xp as the operating system. i dont have to close anything down to get it to run, that includes all the security running in the background.
The music, albeit elevator music, doesnt interfere with the thought process!
I would thoroughly recommend this game. It would certainly make a great stocking stuffer.

Frustrating, not for serious players

I haven't had any software problems in XP, unlike many other reviewers, but I always make a point of minimum installations. However, the dictionary in the game is bad -- in particular, it does *not* use the latest Official Dictionary (4th edition). To take one example, the word QI and the plural QIS are not available in this game, and those are important Q-without-U words for serious Scrabble.

I wouldn't mind that fault if the software allowed you to add words to the dictionary or to override computer challenges. Alas, neither option is available so it's critical that the dictionary be right. But the dictionary is wrong. So the game is wrong. It's not Scrabble.

One of the best electronic versions of Scrabble I've seen

While it does nothing spectacular, Scrabble Complete is the best Scrabble computer game I've played.

The multiplayer is a neat concept, but you'll need to install the included Gamespy software. It's not difficult to install, but there are privacy concerns since you need to register with the Gamespy folks to get up and running.

I am very disapointed that there are so few people playing online. If you're looking for random matchups on the Internet, you may not easily find yourself a pickup match. Infogrames needs to sell more copies!!

Shame, shame, shame

I loved playing Scrabble as a kid in the 1950s. My new HP computer came with a copy of Scrabble. I played about 4 games and it quit. They no longer support it (bummer) so I went to the net to buy it. Got it from some outfit Amazon recommended. Installed it. Crash.
Black screen of death. 3 times. File thirteen. The $10 isn't worth the hassle of returning it. Hope it works for you because it's a great game. But don't try it on a Dell Dimension 8300 Pentium 4, 3.2 with XP pro.
