Tricky setup

Lots of people seem to have the same problem: The computer hangs up at a black screen. In my case, it seems to be due to Zone Alarm asking if it should "allow" Scrabble to access the Internet. Unfortunately, the screen is black during this process!!

What I did was right-mouse-click on the Scrabble shortcut, and set the "compatibility" setting to windows 98/ME. Then when I started Scrabble, after a few seconds of black screen, I was able to see my desktop, and there was Zone Alarm asking its questions. After saying "yes" to all of them, I was able to start Scrabble normally (after resetting "compatibility" to XP).

Hope this helps. I like the look and feel of the game, and it is not slow on my computer.

Does not work on XP despite it saying it does.

Atari needs to be honest with people. This did not work on my machine. After bringing it home and installing it, my screen would just black out. After trying to get it to work, I suspected that it really didn't. I then got online and looked on Amazon and read other reviews of what other people thought to see if it didn't work on their systems with XP and sure enough, a lot of people are having the same problem. Fraudulent advertising.

The thing that gets me is what they suggest you should do if you have this problem as suggesting in their support on their website. They do mention the screen blacking out and suggest that the user shut down all programs running in the background, but this isn't realistic. I have security programs running in the background and more than enough memory to run besides anyway. There's no reason why I should have to shut down every program just to play Scrabble on my computer. I've played other games in the past that required much more memory and haven't had a problem so why should I have to with this one? Come on Atari, develop better games or at least don't advertise that it's XP compatible when it's not.

Disgrunted Scrabble Player

I bought this game and it has consistently crashed my WindowsME running computer. I have following their inane FAQ and the helpless desk commentary, but to no avail. And, since I've opened the package, I can't return it. With all of the bugs in the program as outlined on their website, you would have thought they would have issued a patch for this game. Even with every aspect of the system up-to-date, and even following all of their tips, my computer freezes to where I have to go for the cold restart. ....

I really hesitated about buyiny this for my new Dell, especially after reading the reviews, but oh heck I took the plunge. Had problems, it just wouldn't work, got a black (blank) screen until I disabled my firewall and privacy service, just a little too much protection . I like Scrabble so much that I don't mind disabling the two when I want to play Scrabble.

This game is flawed

I am an avid player and love playing on the computer even though this game is flawed. Every once in a while, when I'm winning against Maven and the game is almost over, about 1,700 points are deducted from my score and shows me I lost. This brings down my average a lot. This game is disappointing if you are used to the older version. It is tricky to move tiles around rack but I finally got used to it. It's cumbersome to look up a word in dictionary. In the older version you were able to check meaning of word just by played without having to type it in. Also I had to shut off the music, it was so bad.

Scrabble Complete does NOT work for XP

Sorry, we have prior Scrabble games, and recently purchased this version. No, it does NOT work for XP, it DOES work for Windows 98 and 2000. Do not buy it if you are an XP user.

Don't purchase if you have Windows XP

Some reviews said that it would run with Windows XP, some said they had no problems...Well, believe the ones that said it wouldn't run....Just gave me a black screen. :-(
Bought it because I could no longer run my Scrabble 2.0 on my new computer -- well, so much for that idea!

Scrabble "Complete" just as bad as Scrabble "2".

Despite what is said by another reviewer, my Scrabble Complete won't work at all on my Win XP computer. I threw out Scrabble 2 about a year ago when it wouldn't work and was happy that a new version came out. But, unfortunately, it's just as incompatible with some computers, while seemingly working well with others.
Good luck!!

If I could indicate "zero" stars, I would. I bought this from Amazon. I have Windows XP. I installed and reinstalled it several times with the same result each time - it freezes up. Not just the game, it freezes up my computer! I have to shut it off to unfreeze it. Single clicking or double clicking (as mentioned in the previous review) was not an issue. I am completely unsatisfied, but as is usual with software, once the package is opened, they're not going to take it back! I think I'll stay away from Atari games from here on out.

Great Game!/XP Users - *Possible* black screen fix.... !!!

This game just rocks; it is just too much fun.
Addictive? You don't know the half of it.
Not just beautiful, with soothing music, but quite educational too with multitudious guides (challenge, anyone?!) and Maven pointing out where you didn't, etc.
Your dusty brain will get a much-needed workout.

Now: Windows XP tribe, listen up! Here is one *possible* fix for the horrid "black screen" issue, particularly if you are getting the sad, most unfriendly "network engine failed to initialize" message in that grey box. Remember, the CD MUST be in the drive you installed from (yes, it can be a clone.)
***DO NOT*** reinstall or update squat on your pristine system, let alone quit any life-preserving processes, much less cry huge, letter-block tears. Instead, try this: As the program vainly struggles to load (give it 3 to 4 hard-drive-grindy seconds) you hit: Return. (Perhaps *once* more if you don't see results.)
-That's it.-
And that's all.
Cheesy startup screen animation should be the next thing you see.... :-)
Good luck and happy Scrabbling!
